For those that give up on hook, why?

I've been curious about this for a while, but I don't get too far on other platforms in terms of legitimate discussion, so I figured I'd ask here. What's the reasoning for giving up on hook, or "going next", rather than disconnecting from the match? And for the people who do this frequently, what brings you back to playing more survivor matches?

It is hard for people to answer this honestly as it gets dangerously close to breaking forum rules.
But I will say when I face a killer who plays in an intentionally obnoxious way with an obnoxious build (Franklin's, Knockout slugging at 5 gens etc) then I would rather be in another match than play this. Also if I see team mates hiding in corners while the killer chases someone else and nobody is doing gens, the match is likely hopeless and probably better to just go next. Twins.
I try not to go next on first hook but some games are obviously hopeless from the start and I don't begrudge team mates from going next against truly obnoxious builds etc (I am NOT advocating this though) but I do agree that some people are pathetic and go next for no apparent reason and the problem is the DC penalty as most would DC and at least leave a bot if it wasn't there.

The event that most makes me want out of a survivor game is sandbagging onto a gen.
Hiding in a corner or locker used to have the same effect, but I haven't seen that in a long time.
People seem confused about the foundation of the game as one team vs a solo player, that mind set does not make for a fun game for me and if I could gracefully skip such matches I'd prefer to.

Honestly, I personally dont care if someone suicides on Hook or if they DC. The Bot is not helpful (and depending on the Killers Perks even worse than a lost teammate).
But people give up when they dont have fun. I think that the reasons might seem silly to other people, but you dont know what the person themselves experienced before. E.g. I never blame people who give up against a Nurse, since playing against a Nurse is usually pointless, since you have to hope that she is learning the Killer. Not doing that myself, but a few days ago I faced 4 Nurse-players in a row, all being obnoxious with muiltiple Slowdowns and the Mangled Add On and it was not fun.
And for me, a Killer who gives me that "ugh"-Feeling is Twins. Because a Twins-Game usually results in 4 people being slugged on the ground and it is so frustrating to play against Victor, since his Hitbox is as big as a truck and you often see his visual model fly past you when he hits you.
So that is one thing - even tho you can obviously say that this does not apply to all instances, simply because people also go next against a Wraith, who is really fine to verse.
And another thing are obnoxious playstyles. E.g. in Chaos Shuffle two days ago I faced a Huntress. We had one AFK-player (which the Huntress new about, because he had 3 Crows) and this person only came back to give up shortly before they reached second stage (so they did one attempt and thats it). Game lost. And the Huntress still felt the need to proxycamp the second person she hooked⦠And I cannot blame that person either that they gave up.
Sometimes you just feel like "Ok, if you need this win that badly, just have it.".

Last sentence is soooo true, you are on point. I have not touched survivor since december because i felt i was at wits end with the role.
7 games, 3 blight, the only thing different about them were the skin (not even kidding oml), then 2 nurse and 2 Billy, all turbo sweating like it's a tournament.
I told myself exactly what you said: "You want to win so badly, then have it", after 6 games where i was like, "God of mmr, put me against a non sweatlord for just one match", and no, another Billy, freshly out of sweatlord inc.
So yeah, i decided to stop playing survivors at all for now, if i play dbd it's for killer or i simply play another game.
I won't gamble my limited time for such low chances of actually having fun.

I find it curious how itβs never the responsibility of the killer causing a person to let go on hook to ensure the survivors have fun. π€

This topic is tough to answer and by that you have be really careful of trying to answer. While I do not do it much, and this is more of a solo thing not when am in in a 4 full man swf.
Most games be that one or two solo or all of the solo q potatoes doing unnecessary things, big examples boons/innovation while your getting chased for 3+ mins or opening chests/urbanning around ( trying for flashlight save and killer may have lightborn, or taking hits and trying to sabo/body block creating free snowballing for killer.
I always avoid lobbies with survivors who has flashlight as survivor as I know your not going to do nothing else. As a killer I want it as sabo/click/head on squads is easy mode imo.
Sandbagging is another thing and this is why I hate bond/ empathy/connection/aftercare because you have very spiteful people who literally runs the killer to your 90% gen and cherry on top the other 2 is doing nothing.
Had this nic cage who had bond, red herring, diversion and deception and using them to lead killer to me and the other 2 and thank goodness that wesker felt something off killed him after the other 2 died and let me escape.
So while I do not next game myself much specially if am 4 man stack. My reasons above is all cause of solo q potatoes if I do it.

Getting bodyblocked by a babymeg who should be nowhere near the area she's bodyblocking in.
Babymeg throwing godpallets at 5 gens while healthy and still taking a hit.
Babymeg crouching in the far opposite corner where it's impossible to even get a terror radius even if you tried.
Either I just meme around with the killer or call it quits. It's not often, but I guess often enough.

The real reason people give up on hook is they aren't enjoying the game, for whatever reason, and would rather prioritise and value their own enjoyment and time, and make the conscious decision to put themselves ahead of anyone else who is affected by that decision.
Sometimes people quit because opposing players are doing something completely obnoxious; other times (and often) it's because of shame at a bad play on their part or because of prejudice against a particular killer/loadout.
Its a slippery slope, cause obviously "fun" is entirely subjective, so taking the stance a player should be able to quit just cause they don't find something "fun" opens a can of worms where basically someone should be able to quit for literally any reason. "Survivor is wearing orange, and I don't like looking at orange". As asinine as this is, it satisfies the condition of "I'm not having fun", so it's a problematic point of view.
Regardless, the quit epidemic really kicked off when they removed depipping from the grading system and personally I believe depipping should be brought back for agregious cases of DCing and SoH.
- DC you lose a pip, derank if at 0 pips.
- If you reach DC tier 3, derank a tier regardless pips.
- Die within 3 minutes of the start of the match, lose a pip, derank if at 0 pips.
- Die within 3 minutes of the start of the match 3 times in a given time frame, lose a pip regardless of pips.
Innocents maybe caught from time to time, but anyone genuinely playing the game will very rarely fall afoul of these, and there is some argument to say, it's kind of fair enough to lose a rank in these scenarios anyway.

Nooo my Rank that is completely useless and does nothing besides giving me a tiny amount of Bloodpoints once per month that I don't even need!
3 -
Hahahaha dead right... but.. that is the point the epidemic started...
A bit like a smiley face or a sad face being shown for speeding... it has a weird psychological effect on people π

I would say almost* never. It may be a negligible amount but there are some of us that really do approach the trial from a dungeon master pov.

Brother depipping does nothing. People used to mass dc on sight of old legion, skull merchant and other stuff which was basically every game. That being said 99% of people that give up in my survivor/killer games is because the match is already lost so there's no reason to drag it further which I agree with.
2 -
It's either that or start handing out hefty bans, or some other severe penalty.
Floor is open to ideas π0 -
because I want to get some points, and no penalty, but still in 99% of the time the game is so killer sided that it does not make sense to play it

"Xeno boring, hit for free."
-the last guy I chewed out for doing this in EGC after I quit the match out of pity for his allies.
Man what is with modern gamers? It's like y'all don't wanna admit you're mad at video games so you use this pathetic "it's booooring" smokescreen. Just say you're mad, you're not fooling anybody.

I imagine the main reason people do it is because they want to give the last person a chance to escape through the hatch. I agree that if they kill themselves on the hook near the beginning of the match, it definitely sucks for everyone else. There may also be some sour feelings when other survivors ignore them, and they end up on the second hook status. This makes the game a whole lot harder for the individual survivor, who will now be the main target for the killer once all the generators are finished.
