Why haven't we got a spider in this game yet?

And I mean no charms or other stuff I mean a literal killer that resembles or is a spider. It's such an easy choice for a horrific killer. I hope to live long enough to witness it.

    arachnophobia maybe?

A lot more difficult to do too. Demogorgon only got added cause Netflix provided the model and rigging, so making a monstrous character was much easier.

Though, considering how far the game has come since then, maybe it's far more plausible now.

If i remember correctly, BHVR Devs once said they don't want to play with people fobias anymore, as they did with the Clown. So, if a Spider get into the game i believe it will be an anthropomorfic killer rather than a spider in 8 legs.

And people will try to gatekeep licenses under the pretense that this is a horror game.

If that’s the case just consult with someone that specializes in that type of character model or hire a person that can do those kinds of character models. Some other developing company with a polite phone call can surely point BHVR in the right direction to get that kind of person, and just hire them for touch ups when needed if it’s a one off, but I think adding monster varieties like spiders-spider like, monster ish mermaids, prehistoric looking morphed creatures that resemble a cave person, would be a rad move. Imagine the back stories you can come up with for that and the amount of new mechanics you can add and create perks for to boost or counter things. Drenched/shiver comes to mind, you’re cold because they hit ice or water. It’s fresh new exciting and opens more doors to toy around with. I’m just getting started and that’s of the top of my head.

One of the archives for the Observer has a focus on Spiders and end's with him encountering a Spider creature, which the resolution for is never told to us, just that the Observer survived the encounter. Granted said Spider Creature was sort of a humanoid/spider hybrid, like a spider minotaur, so possibly not going for the exact Spider creature design you would have in mind.

So it's possible one could arrive in the fog, granted there's alot of thing's shown or only mentioneed in the archives that we probably will never see in actual game, but if they did go for one it possibly might be the Spider creature from that archive.

plague and clown keep being controversial by being so closely tied to phobias that make the game significantly harder to play.

plus, they've already toyed with killers that can slingshot themselves across the map (kaneki, kind of wesker too actually) and slow you down (a good chunk of the zoning roster has hinders, or wesker if you want it as a debuff) so the concepts that would make a spider killer clearly can be translated into other killer concepts.

Please no, I will die inside if I ever open up a ptb and it's a spider. I can barely handle the spiders in pokemon, don't make me deal with whatever menace a horror game could cook up.

I have hope in that Macmillan "cocoon" thing revealing a spider killer in the future. In the archives we've seen both kinds: a giant spider and a humanoid one so hopefully we'll get something one day.

i mean we got clown and plague so i think phobias as a reason are out the window.

For what it's worth they also said Chucky didn't fit into DBD and lone behold we got Chucky. Not saying that's definitive, but I wouldn't take their words directly to have any meaning. It's the nature of the business.

That's the type of good ######### I want in this game.

I seen those cinematic archives. That would be sick if they add those in.

They could still do a spider. They can just add some kind of arachnaphobia option like with colourblind mode, that changes the spider into something else visually. Like how world of warcraft changes all spiders into crabs l

Couldn't agree more on all counts!

It would be an impossible task for BHVR to try to account for every possible phobia or trigger whilst still maintaining full creative & artistic control.

I, conversely, own several tarantulas & spiders, so naturally find them extremely fascinating anyway!

They are probably aware of how jarring Plague and Clown can be for people with Emetophobia and Coulrophobia, and don't want to repeat themselves with one of the most common fears.

Another reason could be the problematic nature of making a killer that can climb walls (the main reason why the Ghoul cannot go up and down floors with his power).

the right way to approach including content like a single character out of 40+ available that triggers a ‚common‘ phobia such as arachnophobia (and lets be honest, coulro-, emetophobia as well) is to implement a client-sided phobia setting that changes the model(and/or sounds/animations) to something neutral that also doesnt give an advantage over the default/cosmetic ones.

It would not affect other players at all and would male it possible for affected people to play a Game they like where the Phobia isnt even Part of the whole theme (no, comparison to nyctophobia, hemophobia etc po isnt reasonable and really just gatekeeping)

Somehow in these discussions it’s also brought up that ‚it’s a horror Game‘ which isnt relevant at all. In every other discussion everyone agrees this is only Horror themed game, actual Horror related gameplay stuff is actively not welcome from this community but frowned upon (hide and seek aspect) and people suffering from a phobia isnt comparable to the fear people have while playing a videogame. I don’t even find Spiders scary at all but still want them in this game. Not for the spare factor but the thematic feeling - though it wouldnt hurt me if others can change it on their screen to something more neutral (which can still fit in with the Horror aesthetics)

It won't happen because the 3 people who play this game but are scared of spiders would cry endlessly on twitter

In regard to the climbing walls, I was envisioning something akin to the way playing as a Xenomorph was on AVP (2010 game), although admittedly, DBDs map design and general gameplay loop doesn't work well with that unfortunately

If they could, id love to see Coraline's the other mother when she's in her spider form at the end of the movie. That would be so cool. Her power could be like; the longer you stay in her world, a timer ticks off. When it reaches completion, you're hindered for 4%. You have to find the seeing stone, then find the ghost eyes to reset the timer.

Her power would kinda be like Freddy, but hinder like a spiders web the longer you don't find the ghost eyes. She could also have a web ability where she attaches it to you and can pull herself towards you for a lounge attack, kinda like kaneki, but you aim on a survivor instead of terrain. Kinda like demo's shed attack, but more accurate since you have a web attached to you.

I'm referencing multiple killers cause their code exists in the game, so it would be easy to adjust them to fit the other mother. With that in mind, they'd just have to make her character model, adjust the codes for her, and proceed to get her ip, and we would be able to have a spideresk killer in our roster. Plus, it would be cool to see through the seeing stone to locate the ghost eyes throughout maps.

Ignoring the phobia bit, what would a spider killer do that they could actually achieve? Crawling on walls would probably be too much for the engine, apparently BHVR hates making trap killers as we can see from the Skerchant removal.

No more than he trusts fire. Guy looks like he would trade his kid for a pack of smokes and a six pack of brewskies. Only to send me on a quest to get his kid back and not pay me.

I'm no game dev, maybe a spider killer would be to hard to program currently? They cant even make perks visible in lobby for Solo Q.

It's an obvious cop out choice.

Another potential problem is that a spider can only really be so interesting as a character and as a killer. We have various killers that fill the niche of animals that don't really have a higher element of sadism, so doing that again might just not be compelling to the devs. And, making the spider human-like in thought process might sort of defeat the point. Trying to make it "Intelligent in a way that isn't comprehensible to humans" is more workable, but not that much more interesting when it's also supposed to just be a bug that kills to survive and eat. This is sort of the problem Warhammer 40,000 runs into with the Tyranid hivemind. Tyranids straight up do not have lore.
