Should I even start playing DBD?

When I first heard about DBD I was very excited. A horror game where you can play as the killer, stalking survivors and scaring the living ######### out of them? - very fun idea! And all the great IPs are there, so many great characters to choose from!
But after watching a lot of DBD videos on Youtube, I find that this game plays more like an action game or tactical hide-and-seek. It seems to be very much focused on outplaying and is also not really scary (at least for the players I've watched). I think it's kind of ridiculous that you can stop killers and evil beings with wooden pallets and blind them with simple flashlights.

I like being scared and I would love to share that with like-minded people, and give them a nice spooky experience. But being not a very competitive player and with all the the warning signs for the players like red marks?, terror radius, playing in 3rd person and healing to full all the time, as well as lot's of very bright daytime maps, it seems more about the mechanics and much less about the horror (I've even seen "poor, helpless, scared" survivors teabagging the "evil, scary, monstrous" killer).

I understand that you can get desensitised to it if you play the game long enough, but isn't there any way to make it scary again, by focusing more on horror and less on having a "three gen setup"? Is there a place in DBD for a player like me? Do other players even want to be scared? And if this is not the game for such a playstyle (which is totally fine with me), does anyone have any suggestions for other games that are more in line with this idea?

I wouldnt expect the Game to suddenly drastically change their complete gameplay.

I get you though, i would love the Game to Focus more on the horror aspect - darker, hide&seek, sirvicors actually trying the avoid the Killer or escape a chase instead of seeking the attention and try to waste the killers time as much as possible.

But this is what made DbD this popular and the community want it to be more action focused, it sells easier to a broader audience and i think it makes it easier to create content like this. And it’s a very hard to design an engaging asym multiplayer Game with mostly hide&seek and less playerxplayer interactions

also while it seems silly that old wooden pallets and ordinary flashlight hurt the killers I think it’s important to note that there are lore reasons for this and it’s just hindering the Killer a bit, not actually defeating them. Also it is just a videogame and there need to be some elements for the survivors to not be downed within 5 seconds after being found

The game used to be much more scary in the beginning.

Lately they sadly take this more and more away and focus on aura reading (so you can´t hide) and chasing and action and simplifying gameplay.

Also new player experience is still horrible and i don´t really know if i would start a new game nowadays. The grind is awful.

There are still scary moments in the game especially at the start.

Other scary games i know are all singleplayer. DbD still is unique in the Multiplayer scenery.

You can't just go in expecting it to stay horror. It's not going to.

You need to fundamentally enjoy the game for what it is, or you won't have fun. If you want a unique asymmetric horror themed tag game that is easy to learn but difficult to master with a lot of interesting and different playstyles, a vibrant community, and some kinda fun silly interactions? Then yes, play this game. If you want to play as iconic horror villains and get the chance to be a Final Survivor sometimes? Then yes, play this game.

If you want to win a bunch or actually get scared, keep looking.

Scratched mirror myers or Ghostface or terror radius suppressing builds can get the jumpscares going.

As for the defences against the killer, what do you expect? Sounds pretty boring if there's no way to survive

100% I'd say you should give it a try but also I 80% can guarantee it may not be your type of game if you are looking for a horror game the scariest parts is probably catching/getting caught off guard and well…ping spikes but if you're looking for a game where you can actually feel like your playing the horror slasher mascot go for it it's pretty fun once you get the hang of it as for survivor gameplay the scary parts will only be for the first 10hrs give or take before the game before it just starts to feel like chase simulator Unless you are playing a lobby with friends to intentionally make it scary outside of that it gets very competitive and metamancy and can really take away from the horror aspect of the game

    anyways
see you in the fog...or not?
