Can DBD ever have a Competitive Mode? | Question For The Devs/Player Opinions
Personally, I find the lack of consistency in pubs to be super boring, and thus i resort to playing comp DBD, since its more balanced.
What I'm wondering is, will a gamemode with balance restrictions ever be released? Im talking Various Banning and Restriction features (Killer Bans, Item/add ons/perk restrictions), removed base features (anti camp meter) and forced offerings
Rewards could be given for playing the mode too. Seasonal rewards for achieving a certain rank, like unqiue cosmetics, more shards and bp.
It takes too long to individually balance all the almost 40 killers, over 200+ perks, items and add ons, so why not have a mode where these are essentially predetermined to compensate to make the game as fair as possible?

Considering how much people in this community whine about gen rush, S tier killers, SWF, tunneling, camping, etc… That's basically every single comp match. On the survivor side playing in a SWF would be a requirement. On the killer side everyone would be playing Blight and Nurse to get the biggest competitive advantage possible. Then you'd have long queue times because you can't have a credible competitive mode with the type of matchmaking we have in the regular queue. I don't think there would be enough interest to justify the development time. At the very least people would get bored of it very quickly. Comp is already extremely niche and the only time it gets any substantial viewership is when it's being propped up by popular streamers.

Hopefully never.

Competitive modes are usually how games die a slow and painful death
If you want a real-time example, see Team Fortress 2 and how disastrous Meet Your Match went

Quite a few reasons for no.
1: It already exists, people have organized it, it would be a waste of BHVR's time to put something in a small group of people do on their own.
2: Even if BHVR did it, unlikely that most people would like their rulesets (the Community Cups being an example of this), meaning they'd stay to their own leagues, making the time spent a waste.
3: DbD isn't designed to be balanced on a trial by trial basis. It would antithetical to the rest of the game to go in that direction.
4: Any decision they made for the comp mode would make everything else feel weird. If something is getting banned in comp by the devs, why is it allowed in non-comp?
5: Giving rewards would be doubling down on the bad idea. It would really look like this niche community is being catered to. Also potentially leading to lots of people playing comp just for the reward, and either hating the experience or just making it feel like the normal game.
6: DbD is a game that is constantly evolving and changing, this would add to the dev time by making all decisions also need to factor in the comp mindset.

There's no plans to create a competitive mode in the game, such as you've described.
The great thing about Comp DbD is that they have their own balancing rules and it all takes place in Custom Matches, we fully support our growing Comp Scene, but that makes no difference on how we balance the game, as we do not balance for the Comp scene, they do a fantastic job of the individual match balancing themselves.

Are there any plans to create a ranked mode, which has the exact same rules as normal DBD, but has things like stricter matchmaking, or other things that aren't really changing the actual gameplay?
This is completely different from asking for Comp DBD, which has such a huge list of custom rules and regulations, that it doesn't resemble normal DBD at all.

again, no plans for a ranked mode either

Thank you for the answer.

Winning in dbd is like discussing religion...nobody can agree in anything.
I don't think bhvr can "win" by anything they do. This game does not need a rank mode.
Imagine how mentally stable the average player is, then imagine the crashout and sandbagging when I bring Treacherous Crows...lmao

I think that is the opposite for games like DotA and CS, and LoL. The fact that they have a competitive scene is what has not only kept them alive, but allowed them to grow.
DBD tries to act like a competitive game by using things like MMR, and balancing things constantly. Do you think Mario Party uses MMR to match people? Does Mario Kart regularly do balance patches to change up character or kart stats?
Smash bros. actively tried to remove the competitive scene intentionally by adding things like tripping into Brawl. And what happened? Everyone hated that game and it died rather quickly.

Comp doesnt exist in DbD. They just made up their own rules.

I felt like this, now i play comp. People gonna whine and hate on it, but it is a place where i can go and everyone trys to win and has a similar level of skill.

Oh thank the Entity. If anything we need more casual modes and casual-minded changes, not more competition! Glad to see the Devs have their heads on straight about this.

Yeah, give me more things like My Little Oni and Lights Out.

First off thank you for responding so fast. As usual you always have a Rapid Response 😏.
Secondly since you've already commented here, I wanted to also ask if there are changes coming to generators that make repairing not so fast, but also more interactive and engaging, with a reward for spending more time?
I really like the Blood Moon's gas machanic. My idea is, you guys incorporate this machanic into the base generators, using a system that stops a gen from regressing past a certain percentage while gas is in the generator. This would be required in order to fully complete the generators, but it would be alot less punishing if a gen were to be damaged constantly to the point where it has no progress left (essentially basekit 3 gen breaking)
I love brainstorming balance ideas for the game, I want to be there at BHVR when I finish post secondary to hopefully help with future game balance. Im studying game design and I want DBD to be my future career.

I would like to see maybe a limited time event in DBD sometime where they let people queue up for a 5vs5 like they had for the DBD Community Cups, so that casual players can dabble in the comp setting.
Having a ruleset like: -
- 4 man SWF and 1 Killer, players can change roles in lobby.
- Only 1 copy of a perks/items/add-ons per side.
- Specific map shared for both games with the same tile spawns that is shown at the start.
- Limited pool of killers to choose from for that match.
- Most kills/hook stages wins.
Only issue is of course you can't see the other game while playing your own. If a replay file could exist, even if only available to download for a very short time, that would be cool.

comp literally does exist in dbd and the rules are tweaked literally so that game can be more fair. Implementing comp/ranked mode would literally help devs finally see state of the game and have a proper sample of players they can make balance decisions based on.

An alternate ruleset that a group of dedicated extremely skilled players who enjoy a competitive setting crated is not the same as a dedicated mode for it. There's a modding scene for things like Hollow Knight and a whole scene for hide and seek in games like TF2 as well, that doesn't mean the game is intended to be played that way or even the way most people play it.

If you want to call the act of frolicking around in a sandbox outside of the intended scope of the game, with no tangible in-game rewards or rankings, and according to rules and restrictions that have nothing whatsoever to do with said game "comp", then sure. I call it cute, not "comp".
I just point and laugh at the idea of "comp" in DBD.2 -
I feel like a "casual, chill mode" would be impossible to do as well.
Because, frankly, what's stopping people from coming in with a mindset to be a nuisance?
2 -
We don't need a comp mode. We just need for custom games to be improved, so that players who want a comp experience can have one. There's no need to divide the already limited community into different modes.
3 -
We already have them, they're called modes. People DO come in to be comp nuisances in them, but they are a) the minority, b) frowned upon.

yes i know that, i used other games that have proplay tournaments (separate set of rules), while ranked still has slightly to moderately different rulesets.
The catch with those proplay tournaments is that game s are still well balanced, but in dbd comp scene tries to balance the game as much as possible.
somehow we all complain about balance of this game, but when there are people that want to experience actually closest to 100% fair matches, they are made fun of. That's one of the major reasons why game balance is in shambles atm.
And btw, world championship proplay tournaments in league are played in custom matches, and CS2 majors are played in LAN

even if we didn't need a "comp" mode, we would need to have a way to have an actually solid sample of players for balancing the game. With current matchmaking and a community like this, this game is impossible to be balanced.
0 -
The biggest reason it can't exist is because matchmaking, anything that divide playerbase can't exist in dbd
2 -
We would need true skill based matchmaking, the kind that locks twin mains in queue for 2 hours.
Bhvr will never go back to that, which imo invalidates any integrity to a competitive mode. I'm not playing comp with essentially backfill logic.
