Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Add more unique Quests to the Rift Quest system!

I know there's a lot of controversy around the new Quest system. Personally, I like the style of getting something, sometimes many times a round, for doing simple tasks as it encourages me to just play regardless of outcome, knowing I will earn stuff even if I lose the round. It makes the game less sweaty for me, personally, and I think in time with some changes could be an improvement over what we had, if the community will give it the chance to evolve to what it could be.

But, I have to say that the quests we currently have are very lacklustre, and I miss a lot of the old challenges like remixes, the memory shards, and glyphs. I also miss character-specific challenges like using powers a certain amount as certain Killers, or doing a certain number of sabotages on hooks as a given Survivor. I want to see these added back, perhaps for characters featured in the Rift. The lore could be unlocked at the start, but I just want to see character specific quests again, especially if they evolve like the milestones and reward me for playing characters I like!

At the same time, the Milestone of Kills and Escapes just isn't a fun one - it encourages playing to win instead of kust playing to have fun, and when you encourage playing to win it increases sweaty and unfun behavior. Kills and Escapes as a milestone tells players, "win at all costs no matter what you have to do - even if it ruins the game for someone else." That should never be what this game strives for, and it's in fact one of the biggest complaints both sides have - it just is not fun. If the Devs intend DBD to be taken a more casual direction, this style of quest has got to go in favor of something else. The game should not be based around just one way of having fun in the game.

My solution to all this is simple - Keep the framework of this system, but do the quests like this:

  • Daily Quests: Simple tasks that can be done as either Killer or Survivor character every day, that change every day. This is what we currently have and I think it's fine. No need to use a lot of brainpower on a super quick daily task for either side! These should give around 25k BP, 100 Iri Shards, and 10 Rift shards to complete at least.
  • Milestone Quests: Progressive, stepwise quests that are simple, but require doing something specific a certain number of times, such as repairing gens, hooking Survivors, cleansing totems, chase time, or completing a certain number of uses of a power as a certain Killer. You could even return red and green glyphs this way. They could also involve status effects, such as inflicting Deep Wound, boosting others with Haste, stunning the Killer, or Exposing Survivors. There should be three each of these Milestones for Killer and three for Survivor. The one thing they should NEVER involved are things like Kills, basement hooks, knock-downs, Moris, escapes, or hiding - as all of these encourage playing to win super hard at all costs or toxic playstyles like heavy slugging. They also shouldn't be so specific that you can't complete them unless you have a certain skill; things like blinding the Killer or performing grabs on generators would fall under this. NEVER design a Milestone Quest to force players to play a certain way, play in an unfun way, or engage in "skillshot" actions that not everyone is going to be able to even complete. Completing these gains players a large amount of BP, Iri Shards, and Rift Fragments over time, I think 50k BP, 500 Iri Shards, and 20 Rift Fragments per stage completed is appropriate.
  • Rift Quests: These quests can require certain characters, involve special elements like more specific glyphs (I'm thinking white, yellow, blue, and purple here) or memory shards, or involve more specific actions. Here is where you can put basement hook challenges and skillshot challenges like blinds as well. They should, again, never involve playing in unfun, sweaty, or problematic ways - but they can require risky play. The notion of a "surprise" glyph or memory shard challenge could offer a fun and unique element to the game, if players want this. Completing these challenges could give anywhere from 50k-100k BP, 500-1500 Iri Shards, and 25 Rift Fragments each. In addition, doing challenges related to certain characters or Memory Shards could also unlock lore entries again, inevitably giving the full story since you would basically always complete these challenges with enough grinding (though all lore can be unlocked at the end for everyone if they want). New Lore would be added in the Lore tab and be per Rift Tome, allowing for players to access and learn about their favorite characters or even other parts of the Fog whenever they want. :)
  • Event/Mode Quests: These special Quests only last as long as an event or a mode does and have their own section in the Quests menu. These Quests would have two kinds - those that have to be completed in the Mode/Event queue, and those that can be completed outside of it. This way, for events like Blood Moon and simple modes like Lights Out, players can choose whether they want to engage in the event setup or play the normal mode. Meanwhile for Modes like 2v8 or Chaos Shuffle it would differ - Chaos Shuffle could involve more Remix challenges in the normal queue or special actions in the mode Queue, while 2v8 could involve playing certain characters in the normal queue or running certain classes in the mode queue. In all cases, these special events have elements that allow for players to complete them in EITHER queue, unlocking special badges, banners, and charms. These challenges offer 50k-100k BP, 500-1000 Iri Shards, and 25-50 Rift Fragments per each challenge.
  • Challenge Quests: This is a new, optional category specifically for Quests that are extra difficult or there to challenge players up to the task, and for good reason - they give the highest possible rewards and possibly other special things as well! There are five kinds: Orange glyphs (Killers have longer power cooldowns/limits, break things, and recover from stuns 10% more slowly/Survivors always slow-vault and have permanent 10% penalties to conspicuous actions like healing, repairs, opening chests, unhooking, etc.), Pink glyphs (Expose the Survivor and occasionally reveal their Aura to the Killer all round/Reveal the Killer's Aura to all Survivors all round), Perk Remix challenges, and "Blackout" challenges (you cannot bring any items, addons, or perks), and "Death or Freedom" (You must Escape through a Gate or get a 3-4k to succeed). You may attempt these challenges as many times in a row as you like, but you must do a specific action so many times to complete them and then finish the round. Though they are difficult, there is an upside - each one individually is worth 200k BP, 2000 Iri Shards, and 50 Rift Fragments. Plus, for every set of five you complete (and yes you can do the same one repeatedly if you want), you earn an extra 500k BP, 5000 Iri Shards, and 100 Rift Fragments, plus you unlock a random unowned banner, badge, charm, or cosmetic piece for an original character you own! If you complete at least 5 sets of 5 challenges before the Season ends, you also unlock a special BONUS badge, Charm, or Banner, specially designed JUST for people who dedicated themselves to these extra tough challenges! These special items would never be obtainable except through these challenges, and could give those who want a harder game with more to do something tangible to work towards.

This setup takes what is good about the new system, and returns the old bits we all loved before such as specific event challenges, character challenges, glyphs, and other special challenges. It also removes unfun sweat mechanics, challenges that encourage bad play, and frustrating challenges that are hard to complete such as basically all of Tome 1's challenges. My hope is such a system would reward more frequent play, less sweaty play, and more interesting play all while keeping stuff we already love about the old system, but in the sleek design of the new system.

What are your thoughts? What are the Devs' thoughts? Would this improve the new Quest system for you?

I forgot to add because I for some reason cannot edit and save my post - for the Event Quests that occur in Events that use Trinkets, the Quests could offer a set number of those, from 25-200 of them depending, just like before. These would still be used in the event store to buy special items and outfits, as before.
