Springtraps axe is a neccesity
I want to say first. On a thematic level, I do not like the axe. I don't think it fits the gameplay of just trying to keep him out of your office. He actually had to get to you to hit.
However in dead by daylight terms, I don't see how they could have done it differently. Killers nowadays need to have some sort of way to catch up in chase or hit Survivors from a distance. If they don't, they are weak. Myers, Ghostface, Trapper, Skull Merchant, all considered to be in the bottom tier. The only other option, if they wanted to keep him out of D tier, would be a dash attack or something, which fits him even less in my opinion.

He could have launched his off-hand or some other body part (ie ears) with the exact same effect.

Isn't that the same "issue" though? In none of the Canon games or lore does he ever launch his bodyparts. I'd argue that would be even goofier looking than the fireaxe.

While it's never been canon that SpringTrap has used any weapon in his lore there's a lot of fan work that has him using a fire axe as a weapon. Makes sense as well with his character considering he's been trapped inside a burning building 3 times.

i could see scrap baby doing that or golden freddy or even chica and her variants with the cupcake but springtrap wouldn't

Everything that makes killers good is so unfun they should address the fact that killers have to have ranged/mobility to be good instead of making killers like this like come on imagine if someone like Pig was released today would probably throw Headtraps and teleport to jigsaw boxes or something
