Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Feedback: Fallen Refuge (bad map overall)

I have some things to say about the new map:

  1. First things first, I'm a little bit disappointed about the awful communication between you, the developers, and the community. According to the roadmap, there was no plan to add a new map alongside the new midchapter and during the PTB time, there was a lot of confusing communication about "it is only the tile that will spawn on Garden of Joy", "It only appears when playing a TWD character", or "it is a new map". Also, I don't blame the CMs, who responsed to our feedback and questions during the PTB time, for that because it is not their fault. In fact, the CMs do a really good job and I am really happy they response to our feedback and questions because this already means a lot - all of the CMs do an amazing job even though it is a really difficult one.
  2. The green filter for this map is so ulgy and disgusting. I don't like it and it makes the map super ugly. This filter also makes the game a bit darker and by increasing the brightness, the filter become even more uglier.
  3. The map is really boring and does not fit in the Withered Isle realm: Garden of Joy, Greenvile Squara, and FNAF map have the idea of a place that was once a beautiful place full of happyiness, joy, and a lot of luck but then turned into a place of horror. Fallen Refuge does not give this feeling because there is nothing that reminds me of it - e.g. Greenville Square has the destroied theater and there are a lot of vending machines that just feel so misplaced but for exactly that reason with the theme). The mainbuilding is on the edge of the map and rather small while everything else on the map feels so boring.
  4. This map is really awful for survivors: You have this little mainbuilding, which is like a jungle gym and then you have shack in the middle and three random tiles (two on edge map and one between shack and mainbuilding). Everything else has here and there some pallets to play around, which are fine. However, the map feels really small and there is a lot line of sight. This means, many killers - not only the high mobility killers but also the range killers - have an easy time on this map and therefore survivors a really difficult time. Another issue of missing line of sight blockers on this map is, that, killers have a much easier time to check generators from a far (for example: FNAF map also have a rather open area and many generators outside but the mainbuilding is a strong line of sight blocker so the killer has a much more difficult to time to check them from afar). I also miss something special that makes the map more unique - usually, you have the mainbuilding that makes the map more unique loop-wise, but this mainbuilding is basically a jungle gym.
  5. And of course, because the map is rather small, there is a high chance to get a disgusting strong three gen (see picture below). I know, we have the anti-3-gen-feature in the game and the feature works as intended but this is still too much and very difficult but also boring for the survivors, especially when the RNG gives them no safe areas nearby or good line of sight blockers to work on them in a more sneaky way (the usuall three-gen-counterplay is missing on this map).

Overall, this map feels really not good to play on from the survivor pov, boring and uninspired, and looks ugly on top of it. I have the same issue with Dead Sands: It is a rather boring map that has nothing special on it - it is just there to have more maps. However, the big difference is that this map is suposed to be TWD themed but it does a poorly job - we have the little mainbuilding and that's it. In my opinion, the map already needs a rework by making it a little bit bigger and adding more line of sight blockers to it to have more counterplay against range killers but also Nurse. It also needs more love in terms of "giving the feeling" of a Withered Isle but this has nothing to do with the balance issue.

Your recent map design is really great with maps like Ormond Lake Mine, Toba Landing, or the FNAF map as good examples, therefore I'm so disappointed that we got this awful map even though you showed us that you can release good maps (design and balance-wise not perfect but nearly perfect).

TL;TR

  • one of the smallest maps in the game
  • so much line of sight which makes range killers and nurse even stronger but makes it also easier to check gens from afar
  • not many safe areas due to lack of size, line of sight blockers, and how the map is designed.
  • has one of the disgusting three-gens in the entiere game
  • the green filter looks so ugly
  • uninspired and boring map that does not fit the theme of the realm.

Funny that map is so bad, noone was actually thinking it's real map on PTB. Just a placeholder to show that one loop…

wait it got shipped out as an actual map? so it a new map and a tile that can randomly appear?

It is its own map and part of the Withered Isle realm. The TWD-tile will always spawn on this map. So, if you play survivor/killer you can get this map randomly.

Everyone thought that this map is just there to show the new tile. No one was actually thinking that this is a new map, especially when the developers and community posts told us that this map is there to show the new tile. It hit me like a truck when I saw that this is a map that you can spawn on.

    I agree with you.

I also think that the map should not be a part of the Withered Isle. It should be a part of Léry's Memorial Institute.

Both of these would have way more things in common than now.

I really hope they will expand and relocate the map.

Yeah, I think it would fit better in Lerys.

I also have no idea how to fix this map in a good way. Many people claim that maps like Forgotten Ruins, Haddonfield, and Midwich are extremely killersided and need a big change when that's not the case. You play the maps in a different way which lets many players struggle. Forgotten Ruins is about using the portals and prerunning while not wasting the outside pallets - take the hit and run into the portals. The only real fix this map needs is move the exit gates more behind the main building and shack so the killer can not see both at the same time. Haddonfield is more around Windows and needs a fix in its RNG to make it more reliable in terms of pallets. Also add more line of sight blockers to the middle. Midwich is excellent for prerunning, switching floors, and other stuff. But this map. It is not a window or prerunning map - it is a pallet map with really bad pallets and too much line of sight. Every killer performs good on it due to its small size, excellent three gen, and the other stuff. Usually, killers have good and bad maps like Forgotten Ruins is bad for Knight, or Twins; Léry's is bad for Oni and Billy but Coldwind is good for them.

The best solution - in my opinion - remove the map and add the tile to a different map. This would save so much time that is needed elsewhere.
