The Trapper needs a Rework but not because he’s weak

Now look I’m not saying that Trapper doesn’t need a rework because he’s trash that’s definitely part of the reason but the main reason I feel like he needs a Rework is because he’s a killer that relies on old mechanics that are progressively being removed/nerfed from the game or have already been fixed to be good.

Camping: I’m mainly referring to the basement in this case and while basement is still a strong strategy it was still nerfed and is obviously weaker now since you can’t stay close to the hook because the survivors will build up anti-camp and unhook themselves, and you can’t stay away from the because that means survivors will break through your defenses and get the rescue.

Tunneling/Slugging: since Dbd is still working on a good solution for anti-tunnel and anti-slug this isn’t to major but I’m gonna provide a little hypothetical for ya. Let’s say you’re playing a match of trapper on Erie of crows a map that’s obviously not good for him and you have 4 hook stages one on Survivor A one on survivor B and two on survivor C. And there are three gens remaining. A is repairing a gen, trapper is currently chasing B and C is currently about to step into a trap survivor D is AFK in basement so we’re not gonna bother them. Survivor C steps into trap while you are chasing Survivor B and they pretty close to, you could definitely go ahead and hook them real quick or could you. If anti-camp was in the game and you choose to hook Survivor C and they die you will no longer be able to regress gens and the survivors would have a major boost to their repair speed all because your trap did its job that means you get punished for it. But that’s a bit unrealistic so let’s see at least one of these punishments are in the game. It wouldn’t be nearly as oppressive, but either way the game is punishing for something you had no control of. Keep in they are still trying to make it so that anti-tunnel isn’t nearly as bad as it was in the PTB but what does this mean for Trapper? A power that isn’t even guaranteed to work most of time do you just ignore the survivor that just stepped into your trap or not? The abuse answer would be yes, but since they’re also working on a way to deal with slugging, not even this can be an option because after a while, the survivor can just pick themselves back up. So not only is he a killer that can’t reasonably tunnel or slugger he also has no control on whether or not he does that or not.

Chase/Time management: as the game has been trying to push itself into a more Chase oriented playstyle trap killers tend to suffer a bit more, especially trapper because even after 9 years he is still the only killer that has to do chores before he’s allowed to play. Which in the end means that 1-2 Gens are gonna get done before you enter your first chase. And even if you do try to play a bit more of an aggressive play style you are then losing out on the pressure that you get for having a web of traps up so either way it’s kind of a lose lose most of the time. So you can either spend time and get little to no reward out of it or you can play aggressively with your traps and just have zero value whatsoever.

now as for why trapper has not been buffed we actually got an answer from one of the devs saying that his kill rate is fine and that it’s good to have a killer that new players can kind of gravitate towards and while I do for the most part agree with this statement, I don’t think they understand that the more the game fix his issues like tunneling, slugging, camping, and much Chase oriented he’s not gonna be a very good jumping point for new players because his power is so outdated and does not play into the current formula of the game. And if I’m being completely honest, at this point in the game I would honestly say that Wraith is a better starting point for newer players since his power is much easier to understand and doesn’t rely on these much older mechanics to get value from his kit. And if that newer player actually manages to stick around and grind for a bit doctor is an even better starting point due to static blast providing info on survivor locations, static shock providing anti-loop, and madness is a great source of slowdown that you get for just using your power.

In short trapper needs a rework not because he’s weak, but because the game is evolving without him. And I didn’t even touch on the smaller things like the new lighting making it so that traps are easier to spot and black tar absolutely useless, newer maps having very little grass, naughty bear still being a pay to win skin, or even the new pallet density making playing an M1 killer a nightmare.
