Has tunneling gotten worse?
Tunneling, or getting tunnel-vision. That is the definition used when the killer targets one specific survivor until they are dead/sacrificed.
Sometimes it happens right away, even at 5 gens left, and other times it is used as a last ditch measure to slow the game down.
Personally, I see this happen in around 75% of my survivor games since patch 9.3.0 dropped, because the survivor role got nerfed, once again.
A literal tunnel, just for illustration purposes.
So, why does the killer players tunnel so much?
Is it to secure an easy win?
Is it to assert dominance?
Is it to be a jerk?
Is it out of necessity?
Or is it all of the above?
Both patch 9.2.0, and the current 9.3.0 were initially meant to combat extreme tunneling, yet it got deemed that this would effectively "kill" the killer role in the process.
To this I would say NO, it won't. It is perfectly possible to win games without resorting to tunneling. As long as you can locate and engage with the survivors early on, this is not a problem.
I play a lot of killer myself. Michael Myers to be exact. An M1 based killer, who is easy to counter and is slow moving. So why do I often get 3-4K games without tunneling?
It's all about playing your cards right. Sure, you can't win every game, that would be statistically improbable. But you really don't have to resort to tunneling in order to get a high killrate. You just need to learn every strength and weakness with your killer.
Are some matches going to be close calls? Yes, of course they will. And that makes it so much more satisfying to win, knowing that you played your part well. It is much more satisfying than getting an easy win, where you effectively made the game into a 1v3 scenario at 5 gens left.
So, seriously guys (and girls), this tunnel-epidemic needs to stop. Especially the hard-tunneling part. It kills all of the fun, and makes the game incredibly monotone to play, on both sides.

I've been running shoulder to burden in solo q to try to combat the hard tunnelers atm and its wild to me I've had two killers just ignore me while exposed to go after the person I just unhooked 😂

I have noticed that too, with people in my friend group even using Plot Twist in front of the killer to try and deter them from tunneling, to no avail.

yup, you can do everything you can to help the tunnel victim but when a killer decides someones not allowed to play theres nothing you can do. Loops absolutely suck now, vpn abusing killers getting unfair hits over pallets making our currently barely functioning resources worthless, we’re powerless to stop it.
I think matchmaking needs to factor in ping where you absolutely can’t be matched with a killer who has over 100 ping and if you do dcing does not have a penalty.

Yeah I've had a few games where hardcore tunneling has occured. It's really bad rn

I would say the answer is "all of the above" except the necessity one. I haven't seen many tunnelers, but I've seen a lot of Pain Res and Ruin. The worst I had was a hacking Skull Merchant who made us all literally drop dead after letting us do all the gens. Yes, I reported them with an in-game report and video evidence, and got an e-mail back saying the ticket has been solved. I haven't seen the in-game notice yet though...

I feel like hard tunneling, camping people into second, and egerious slugging have all slowly gone up since the first anti-cheese ptb. Having all three of those happen to me multiple times in one seesion—and many with a very griefing flavor—doesn't really inspire me to play surv.

This is something I have noticed as well, in both NA and EU regions.

So, why does the killer players tunnel so much?People like to win games. Some people will avoid obviously broken elements for the sake of enjoyment, but for others its a simple case of 'what's the best path to victory?'
I really have no problem with the idea that people do it, I do have a problem when discussions (and BHVR) don't actually focus on what's the best game for as many players as possible.
Both patch 9.2.0, and the current 9.3.0 were initially meant to combat extreme tunneling, yet it got deemed that this would effectively "kill" the killer role in the process. To this I would say NO, it won't.I agree, I thought the responses where extremely hyperbolic. Kill rates could have dropped (though I think the feedback missed how much stronger non-tunneling killer players would be boosted), but it certainly wasn't going to be the 'impossible' levels some predicted.

I've definitely noticed a trend towards the "easy route" more often than not.
Especially now that it is easier than ever to do.4 -
Well bhvr has nerfed strategies that don't involve tunneling and hasn't given killers benefits for not tunneling.
No surprise, killers tunnel.

I wanted to let you know why this is happening so much. One Gens have been very fast this patch. Even faster than usual.
I played survivor today and when me and my teammates where on a Gen and it was literally 30secs with until it popped. In my Killer matches today on my first Chase 30secs and a Gen popped
Not saying this to be mean but its what i experienced and it could be the reason.
Running Gen Defence doesn't do anything anymore. Not because of the Survivors but by design of the game.
I might do a post later on how truly fast the Gens fly to prove it

I didn't realise how bad it was until I went against a team with stacked medkits and botany as pig. They healed so fast that it meant the only option was to focus down whoever I managed to injure. I spread the first hooks because RBTs provide a little slowdown but after that, hooks 5 and 6 were on the same survivor in a row and only then did I have a moment to breathe.
Edit to clarify: this was before the latest patch, so the amount of pallets certainly didn't help.

It has definetely gotten worse for me personally. Played 4 solo queue survivor matches this morning and at every single one someone died at 5 or 4 gens without anyone else getting hooked.
It might also just be a personal feeling but I feel like the general toxicity has gotten even worse in recent weeks. Have never been humped on the ground or hit on hook as much as in the last few days.
Maybe the power trip rants were true after all
5 -
Toxicity has definitely spiked pretty high.
Pretty sure you have a point about the power trip rants.
Wonder what is actually causing the players to express such toxicity. I have stalked a couple steam profiles, looking for comments, and the bad ones are doing toxic stuff on both sides it seems. Like excessive teabagging, flashlight clicking and such as survivor, or hitting on hook / humping as killer. These players are also likely to hard-tunnel someone at 5 gens, and spam "ez" in the end-game chat.

Same with slugging when you go against very coordinated swf that can denny you hooks and do gens then you cant do anything else than slug and tunnel someone out when you got a chance to reduce their effectiveness because you cant play normaly they would cook you on gens and you would have few hooks from twice as many downs which is kinda bad. I had now one feng that had to go because she was sabbo problem and two of her teammates went into corners from which there was just one hook I could make it and hook there other were too far away so I had to focus on her, I hooked like two other before tunneling her out (two times, first she just stayed near someone I chased so I switched to her and second time she was healing under the hook and I had enough of this boring sabbo to deal with).
Hit and run is long dead and this strategy was possible when they nerfed healing but now there is new meat which is fast heals after unhook which sucks plus many good healing perks like botany, orelas with hook stagest for each it gives 50% to healing speed etc..

I see killers try but only really works if people don't do gens an the person being tunnelled is terrible or messed up hard. .
-6 -
It is very map-dependant too.
2 -
The game can potentially be over less than 4 minutes from the start, it's not smart to spread hooks.
2 -
Well the Speed of the Gens are the main reason i Tunnel all the time. You just dont get alot of time to spread hooks
The tunneling gone up because the Gen speeds got worse every patch.
If you dont believe me then play Killer and only killer for a week or month straight.
-8 -
I don't think anything effecting gen speed has been buffed this year. I don't think we have even gotten a new gen perk unless you count one-two-three-four which gives skill checks more often.
3 -
Correct. We have not gotten any gen-related perks on either side for a while.
The last perk that directly affected repairs was Bardic Inspiration. Toolboxes are still the same though, and there are builds you can run to get massive value out of them, much more than slapping a Brand New Part on a gen.One-Two-Three-Four is more a generalist perk, that affects all skillcheck interactions. Repairing, healing, pig boxes etc, but it won't grant any speedup to progression, aside from hitting greats.
And no, there has not been any direct buffs to repair related perks or items, for a long time.
