Adding fear back into the game.

Let's talk about the scariness of DBD. It's not. At all. The only people who were scared are the people who have played for less than 50 hours. At that point they've seen it all and done it all. Now what if we made the maps DARK. Not just semi bright but pitch black night. Generators are the only safe haven and flash lights have a purpose. Killers have sorta night vision but not really. I dunno...I just wanna add fear back into the game like it should be. Any other ideas for making the game scary again?

I absolutely agree the game needs to be more scary for survivors.

But making the game dark will literally only benefit the toxic Claudettes.

idk just spitballing. For a game that's supposed to make killers a scary thing it really doesn't do that..

What's terrifying is when I don't know the killer is nearby. Sneaky radius-less folks make me jump (more than once on a popup Myers) and more wary about what I'm doing whereas when someone loud comes barging along it just gives me more of a chance to get away.

I think letting the game get darker would be less of a help overall, since if people stick to dark cosmetics they'd just blend in easier and people with vision problems would have further strain. I brighten most of my games a tad more than what they want the default at just so I'm not squinting at things going 'what's that?'.

That's why having killers with somewhat night vision would help with the darker cosmetics. And lets all be honest there's only two people with dark cosmetics and literally everyone except the survivors who cannot play without those specific cosmetics want them brightened up and changed.

I dont think its possible with how the game is.

The audible warning of the terror radius removes that aspect and no amount of darkness will remove being able to hide when you hear that.

That's why the scares come mainly from Myers and Hag nowadays.

Want the game to be scary?

Remove the heartbeat and red scar and add a violin sting when a survivor is hit when they are not in a chase.

The heartbeat can come back until the chase is finished.

Chases don't start until a survivor gets hit or is sprinting away from a killer looking at them. Though up to one layer of walls/obstruction to keep chases more consistent.

Delete your memories and here you go.

Noone is going to fear DbD after multiple 100 hours.

I think your best bet is by trying to make maps feel less familiar. One of the more subtle elements of horror is uncertainty. Initially, you don't know the layout of maps, which is terrifying as you get chased, you have to make split second decisions adding to the fear of being found.

If you want to make the game scary, make sure that survivors cannot "dream" a map out of their head.

They would have to remake the entire base game desing. DBD as of right now is just a violent game of hide and go seek.

For DBD to actually be scary and partially remain that way. They would need to design the game around jump scares and instant deaths with horror themed levels. Maybe even remove co-op or human played killers.

Even with that people will eventually grow numb to it still.

Fear is completely arbitrary and subjective. What scares you likely won't scare me. No matter what changes they make, someone will and will not be scared by it. Also, consistent exposure to these "scary" things will desensitize people to a point where the game isn't close to as scary as it could be. That would just lead to the same "problem" you are having right now. There is no reason for them to try and artificially pump in things to make the game scarier.

    lol Remove Legion.

  • I think most players can agree that something needs to change for the better, but it's a big problem. The only way you can put fear back into the game is to make Killer's a threat to survivors. Survivors should dread getting chased by the Killer.

    But this won't happen because:

    • Everytime Survivors feel frustrated and annoyed by any way a Killer tried to get to them, BHVR will seek to remove it. That's why we have timid/lukewarm chases.
    • Survivors grow and gain experience with dealing with each Killer, while we Killers still have to be balanced enough for if we ran into new player. That's why most experiences survivors feel they can play with Killers for fun, which isn't scary.
    • Most Killers are so badly designed that they can't be scary, like Wraith which you normally see come running from a mile away. Trapper becomes impotent once you know how to avoid traps, etc.

Its quite the problem, and we cant ignore how survivors feel about everything, because they also belong here too.

So ofc this leads up the the biggest contradiction in Dead by Daylight, Killers should be a threat, without being frustrating and annoying.

And surely a threat is ALSO frustrating and annoying, which is why Killers are not threatening currently.

BHVR cant solve this problem, without stepping on Survivor toes, which is why It wont happen.

While hre OP is right about dead by daylight losing it's "scary atmosphere", the problem somehow lies more in the gameplay than the presentation.

You arent " scared", "thrilled" or "tense up" when you're 100% safe. Im not saying this percentage is true for dbd but good survivors get close to it.

I've seen many suggestions for darker lighting, but thelast few of those the OPs only wanted to hide easier as killers would NEED some build in tracking tools, a "flashlight effect" (brighter area in the middle of the screen) or "killer vision"(left 4 dead infected or ns2 alien come to my mind).

But as already mentioned, weaker killers trigger weaker reactions. Im really biased but i guess most survivors would agree that facing a good nurse gets their heart pumping more than facing a clown.

You loose fear of things you become familiar with, This is especially the case with DBD. As soon as the new experience wears off you realize the game isn't actually scary, It has horror elements, that's it.

The only way a killer could be scary and remain scary is something like Hag, prayer beads spirit or no terror radius Myers, Jump scares are kind of the only true way to get scares once survivors become used to being chased by the killer.

There is some fear of the strongest killers but that isn't genuine scary as much as it is fear of loosing the game.

Try playing any horror game for 50+ hours and still being scared.

There's a reason good horror games pace themselves when revealing the spooky monster/killer/whatever. Because it's the unfamiliarity that makes it scary. You cannot remain unfamiliar in a situation you've been in for hundreds (in some cases thousands) of hours.

Hello, I am a survivor main and you are not telling the truth, because I wanna win.

To all the smart people out there:

Michael myers jump scaring you, is still scary.

If you weren't so super safe, you were scared.

    Trust me.

There is no Horror game which will be scary after playing it for long enough. A good example would be Amnesia - The Dark Descent. An awesome game and really scary at the first playthrough. But once played enough, you are not scared of the Monsters anymore, and more willing to glitch them than running away.

And this is with every Horrorgame. Just play Outlast for the 3rd or 4th time. You will not get scared.

Whatever change you make people will inevitably adjust to and we'll be back to square one with the game not being scary again.
