I need some survivor basics....

So, I'm going to start splitting my time between killer and survivor....here's what I'm doing so far:

I don't attempt a save before at least 2 gens are complete, for the trap chance.
I don't drop a pallet unless absolutely necessary.
I'm going to run Kindred as soon as I get it.
I have SB and SH.

Now, here's what I can't figure out....do I flail my arms when the Killer is gone, or when he is close by? I've seen survivors do both, so I'm a bit confused by what it means.

I'm not very good at looping or escaping....and I seem to do a "slow vault"....is that due to exhaustion? Some people don't seem effected by it. Do I need to take SB to loop, or it is possible without it...just good at mind games?

Any basic advice is appreciated....no matter how trivial you might thinks it may be.

You're supposed to flail when the killer is close by, I believe. Slow vaults are due to the angle you're approaching the window from. You need to be running at the window pretty much dead on to get through quickly. This is why, when shack looping, you want to generally jump the window from inside. Jumping from outside, and getting a fast vault, would require that you move further away from the wall so you could set up a 90 degree angle window jump, allowing the killer to catch up in that time. You don't need sprint burst to loop but it's the best exhaustion perk. Once the nerf comes through, it will exist mainly to deny the killer the first hit and won't help during the chase.

When the Killer is nearby, don't just flail your arms. Let them come all the way up and start a tiny bit of progression on the self-unhook bar before dropping them again. If you just flail around a bit, people will think it's safe to come get you.

Better to learn to break LoS and hide, which is much more difficult. Looping is effective but doesn't get you much in the way of points because you're constantly in a chase. Everytime you break a chase for 5 seconds, you get an emblem scoring event + BP scoring event.

You will need to learn when it's necessary to run away from an area because of a Killer, and when it's best to just stay crouched down and hide. Worst part of Surviving when you are starting out imo. Depending on the Killer and their Perks, both strategies can be effective. You will need to learn to figure out what Perks they are running as Whispers is the biggest detriment to hiding.

Big thing. Relax, stay calm, and be chill with everything. When you die fast, accept it and move on to the next match. Try to avoid the usual toxic shitslinging and throw out the gg to the Killer. It is actually acceptable to give the props as well in the "report" functions. I do this for Killers who play great and give me a fun match. Even when I die, you can respect the other person's skills.

Balanced Landing is a good option too now that they've removed the cooldown on the high fall recovery. Mind you it still has the exhaustion cooldown so until the devs decide to change it in a different way from sprint burst you'll only get the one escape tool.

My advice is to play however way you want to play. In the first dev diary, Ash Pannel mentioned how cooperative play : “...at the end of the day; It’s all about you.”

I know you asked for Survivor Basics... but to me; Having fun your way is the most important advice I (personally) can give. I don’t try to find the perfect tactics- I make my own. (Not saying that as hurtful, apologies for any offense)

Funny you should mention that....I'm VERY good at hiding. Many games I don't even get hit or hooked. It just doesn't pay off as well with BPs to simply fix gens. In my very short experience, it turns out....other survivors are my worst enemy.

I'm NOT joking, had a match tonight...I did get hooked once. My FIRST hook (work the damn gens)...within 30 seconds I had 2 other survivors almost fighting to unhook me. The funny part, the Killer was Billy Jr. Revved up the chainsaw, yep....took all 3 of us down. Like really?

I've got the clam thing down as well. And it's NOT that I don't appreciate your help, I honestly do...thanks. It's just very easy to remain calm when your main is a killer, and you don't care about ranks for survivors. I think I'm at 13, and couldn't care less if it drops down to 20 again.

Thanks for the heads up on the emblem break point. It's tough earning points as a survivor. I work gens, rarely save, and run even less. So points are slow.

I only throw my hands up and down if the killer is camping. I’m the type of person who waits until someone else is being chased or I get the gen I’m working on completed then I’ll go for the save. As for SB you definitely don’t need that to loop just keep aware of your surroundings the minute you see the killer either run or walk away but also survey your area so you know where to run to whether it be pallets or windows also make sure the pallet isn’t broken before you get chased trust me you don’t know how many times I’ve run to where a pallet should’ve been and all of a sudden I’m hit because what do you know it’s broken

PSA to everyone in this thread:

Flailing your arms means that the Killer is CAMPING!!

It has never meant anything else, it's the newcomers that turned it around. I and many other older players will leave you to rot on the Hook if you flail your arms unless we notice that the Killer is indeed away from
    you.

Hanging still means that it's safe.

Learn to stealth play and look around before entering an area. Example you see you’re playing the pig, wraith , Myers, hag, any killer that is invisible or has a small terror radius . It’s good to look around before going anywhere. Especially keep an eye out when doing gens against the pig. She’s sneaky.

Idk what survivors you have maxed yet for their perks, Meg/Min (sprint burst/Lithe), Claudette/Quentin (self heal/pharmacy), and David( We're gonna live forever for point farming and dead hard)are recommended. Nea is also a great starter survivor since she gives really strong perks. For tactics, typically scout and see what kind of killer are you are up against, look for other survivors to help with gens or distraction or protection, have map awareness (do early gens that are problematic like near basement or center of map) know where totems typically spawn. Main thing is to not panic, you're going to get tunneled and camped some games, you're gonna have dcs, but you'll get better the more you play.
