Thought about Queue Times and Region Lock

Region Lock was a thing that was introduced to Dead by Daylight about a couple of years ago.

Before Region Lock, back when I first started playing DBD in very late 2016, you could get into matches with people from all over the world just by changing your Steam download region in the Steam settings.

Had a hard time finding matches in wherever-you-are because you're a totally well-adjusted adult who's been playing this video game until 4 in the morning? No problem, change your download region to that country that's on the other side of the globe where it's still early evening and viola – instant matchmaking!

The problem, of course, was that your connection wasn't necessarily the best. Don't get me wrong, you could have just fine connection with even people on the other side of the planet depending on your internet (and theirs), but a lot of the time you could get hosts in your own region who were actually playing from [enter name of country from other side of the globe here] and had just the worst connection.

So whenever you got matched with people who had connection from the moon, you'd find yourself in horrible-ping country regardless of where you were.

Region Lock was introduced as the solution to this – no more Los Angeles Killers opening lobbies in Poland by changing their region to Warsaw.

So what's the problem now?

The problem was that all this was done because players back then had no way of actually seeing what kind of ping they'd get while in the lobby.

That little bar that shows green, yellow or red in the side when you're in the lobby or above the Survivors' names? That wasn't a thing.

This was a big part of why people started using third-party software like MLGA – just to be able to see the ping.

But now that we have a way to see the ping, Region Lock is making less and less sense to me, personally – especially considering the queue times we've been having in recent months.

People were only complaining before because they couldn't tell what they were going to get until they actually played the match.

I don't know if BHVR can remove the Region Lock (it's more of a Steam thing, isn't it?) and I'm not saying I know for a fact that doing so would be the solution to all of our woes and troubles – but I just thought to share my thoughts on it.

I'm well aware that Dedicated Servers are in the pipeline so I don't know how that affects Region Lock as well.

What do you think?
