Still wish the spirit’s design was more horror oriented

I think her idle sounds, and hair seemingly flowing upwards are really cool. Especially the eyes. But the rest? Well, concerning clothing it’s an... interesting choice to say the least, and I’m still suspicious of her occupation before death, but alas, I hope she gets a cosmetic to bring that fear factor in that she really needs.

PS, don’t mind the gun, it’s the new decisive strike buff coming soon.

Oops. Sorry for the trauma. Probably shouldn’t tell you about what happens when you shoot the stomach.

Cry of fear. Extremely scary game that is free on steam, it's good but I wouldn't recommend it for the weak of heart.

Childhood mostly, cry of fear isn't scary, just a huge jumpscare fest that tries to be deep by being a weird silent hill clone.

Ngl it's hilarious to play when drunk with friends with how clunky it is on multiplayer.

It’s a good game. The pinnacle of horror, if BHVR were to take any notes on atmospheres and killer design, this would be their best choice.

You missed all the symbolism then. The symbolism is what makes it so legendary in the horror community.

Lol what, if you want great ambiance and pinnacle of horror and disturbing #########, play silent hill 2, not cry of fear.

I agree, her sounds were better in the PTB.

They improved her sounds since the first patch (less Waluigi-like HAAAAah), but it's still not as good as her originally subtle and mysterious variation.

not to derail my own convo but silent hill isn’t as scary because it’s third person, actually, it’s fixed camera. CoF is first person, and loaded with dread. MUCH more effective in first person. Can’t see what’s behind you. There’s a reason PT ditched the camera type. Also you know silent hill is also loaded with jumpscares right?

In my opinion, the camera angles made Silent Hill scarier because you had no control over the camera. You were forced to look toward where the game wanted you to look. It was intentionally discomforting and disorienting.

her Waluigi voice is indeed a detractor from her otherwise horror vibe.

I don't care how weak killers are, as long as they scare me from playing survivor! :)

By the way, my Nurse is way more scary then Spirit at the moment:)

I was told the other day my Spirit was terrifying, so I say she is "horror oriented".

Of course, I remember playing Cry of Fear, but then Uninstalled after that intro of the cameras and glass breaking O.o

I find her face and select screen image too cartoony.

    I love discussions about horror.

I actually disagree with you both about what should be considered the "pinnacle of horror". Neither Cry of Fear or Silent Hill are that good. I think the best horror one can experience is either Amnesia TDD or Alien: Isolation.

Cry of Fear relying so hard on jumpscares is not really well thought out. Jumpscares are only one of the three columns in horror. If you do too much of it, you have something like FNaF, which can be scary at first but then jumpscares become more annoying than "Oh, that one really got me!".

The deal with the camera view from Silent Hill (and early Resident Evil games also, by the way), I honestly never liked fixed camera angles. Its not scary or threatening, just rather... clunky. I mean, I understand older games and all that, but even for that it felt awkward.

Thirdly, and this is really subjective, but for me, true horror is not being able to fight back. Now, Alien did have some sort of "fight back" when you got the flamethrower, and its my only dislike about the game (though it just scared it off, to be fair). Both Cry of Fear and Silent Hill are more action horror than survival horror.

#########-Up-ness, I dont consider it that scary. Interesting, yes, as it adds to the experience. But by itself, its not enough. (I know none of these games have gore, but I want to add this goes for it too)

Neither 3rd person or First Person is definitive for Horror. Both can be used effectively as a horror tool. First Person is definitely not the be-all end-all, most Horror movies we have since the dawn of cinema has been third person.

Silent Hill was good but I tend to agree with PigNRun I thought Alien: Isolation was far more effective at horror.

Too many jumpscares actually stops being scary after a while and becomes more humorous to be honest. Real horror digs in deep and you get that from feelings of helplessness, not from jumpscares.

I like fixed camera, if you played the original Alone in the Dark, they did some amazing fixed camera work there to up the horror, and it was't because the game was old. It's the same cinematography trick used in movies like Critters to suggest the point of view of a monster hiding in a bush or under the bed or something.

@DarkWo1f997 I know the symbolism in cry of fear, hence why I call it a Silent Hill wannabe , that fails to achieve what the other did and ruined it's potential by stuffing the game full of jumpscares and obnoxiously loud monsters.

The third person camera and overall clunkyness of the games always worked the favor of the game, you aren't an action Hero, you're an average man in a hell of a town trying to survive, not win fights, and the fixed camera angle is here to make you uncomfortable, you're not the one in control in this town.
