A question to Devs about Console performance
Hello,
I've just started really playing this game about three months ago, and I'm having a great time, but I have a question about how the game runs.
Last night I turned on my PS4 and played some MK11 i don't remember the fan going off once. I switch over to DBD and the fan starts running like crazy and I'm not even past the the title screen with the hash marks and smoke clouds.
Now I know you can say the PS4 has been running for a while so of course the fan starts, but this also happens when I just play DBD after turning the console on.
So I'm just wondering is, what about this game that make the console work so hard and are the Devs looking into this?
Thanks

Its probably either only a PS4 thing or just your PS4 because my xbox doesn't do that when it starts the game

I play PC but I've heard of this being an issue for other console players. The game is poorly optimized for consoles but I'm sure that this will be a part of the overall performance optimizations coming soon to console players.

I have a base Ps4 and DBD runs well on it but occasionally makes the fan work harder than it should. It could be your Ps4 or the game idk :P
Edit: Nvm it's the game

This game is poorly optimized in general.

I did wonder if it is just a PS4 thing as well.
Also my console is a little on the old side but the only other game I play that kicks the fan into overdrive is RDR2. This one makes sense. RD is a huge game. DBD is so much smaller in comparison. Will optimization make things better?

We brushed upon this in our last dev update: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/63559/
In short, we are still working on optimization (for all platforms, console included). Running your console for a while will contribute to that-- it'll heat up while it's on no matter what you're doing, and the fans will kick in when it starts getting too hot. Ultimately though, it will vary from game to game.
When you're playing a sidescrolling game, it's a lot less intensive since you only have to display a small number of objects, most of which have no collision, with pre-baked lighting (i.e. it's not casting light in real time, it's putting the light effect on objects to make it look like it). You don't need to worry about the collision or lighting of that rock way in the background; it's not going to move and the player is never going to get anywhere near it.
When you're dealing with a game like Dead by Daylight, where maps are procedurally generated and you can go just about anywhere you can see, that's a different story. You can't cut corners and remove the collision on distance objects because you can actually go to those objects, for example.
We're still working on optimization, though, and we've got a team dedicated solely to optimization in addition to other parts of the team helping out where they can. Our goal is to reach 60 FPS on consoles. We're not quite there yet, but we're still working towards it.

My PS4 Pro has this issue; the poor console sounds like a dying jet engine when playing DbD. It happens regularly while playing the game, but it always especially happens on that loading screen with the clouds.
It's not an issue with other games, only DbD.

@Purple_Orc I'm playing on PS4 Pro and I have similar experiences. Only with DbD the console works so hard. So there's nothing wrong with your PS4.

Thanks for the reply. I do understand the strains on a system when I has a lot to render. It's just the way things go.
But when I turn on the PS4 go right into BDB and get to the title screen, I'm not even in the menu yet, the fan starts.
So what is it about those red clouds and hashmarks that's making my PS4 so hot?
