Is this a "competitive horror" game?
It has ranking systems, perks, leveling up and more. Even a solid meta and high level play, do you think this could be classified as a competitive horror game even though it's asymmetrical?
Or do you feel BHVR, should or wants to stay casual? Can it even do so in the current state of the game?

It's competitive by it's very nature of player vs player. I know Behavior wants to claim the goal is to be casual and nobody should want to try their best to win so there's no need to balance since fun is the only objective, but that's a dellusional goal that will never happen. Whether or not it's a more casual or competitive isn't actually up to the developers, it's up to the players.

Yes it's both.
1/ There are players playing against each other - competitiveness, check.
2/ There are meat hooks in the game that survivors want to be hooked on - horror element, check.

this game is not competitive nor will it probably ever be

I'd say it's competitive for mostly the high ranks and more casual fun in the low ranks. Games like this are hard to balance as its 2 different games in one.

It's a competitive game that needs to get balanced better. DbD is very entertaining to play + watch and has immense potential to be even more successful, if balance, ranking + matchmaking system would get improved.
For any game, I think putting too much focus on the "casual" side is not a good decision. Very skilled top-rank players whose matches are balanced, fair + exciting to watch (regular streams or tournaments) will help increase a game's popularity.
Also casual players aren't the ones who promote the game to their friends, spend a lot of money etc.

@NoShinyPony the problem with the game around high skill players is do you balance it around the killers, solo survivor or SWF?
1 -
That's not the case. Even if you had 2 games in one, if one of them is casual and one is competitive, it should be entirely obvious that you balance around the competitive side.

this game has a loooooong way to go before even being considered remotely competitive
2 -
At its core it’s considered a “survival horror” game which is true when first starting but as you rank up it looses its horror aspect and turns competitive imo. All this game needs to be officially competitive is its own Esports competition (which I hope never happens)

"It has ranking systems, perks, leveling up and more."
how come perks and levels makes game competitive?~ guys metin2 is competitve game Pog
ranking system? well maybe its weird for you but most games have that. why? to give ppl reason to play/grind. Dude in what competitve game you have rank reset 1 time per month and that reset is taking half of your rank? its to make ppl grind/play xd not competitive
competitiveness is contradictory with dbd lore xd (in which as killer you have to give them hope and kill them when they think they can escape) but most of so called "competitive" killer players slug for 4k on 5 gens with ruin up, or tunneling 1 person from fresh hook to death hook
ok i bitched about esports ready killers, time to talk about esports ready survivors P3 claudettes or in brown tshirt, that can only hold m1 but if you find them they die in 10sec, but dont worry they will do 5 gens leave game and safety pip (because they aint done s... to pip except holding m1 on gen)
ok so i told why this game cant be competitive because of players, now lets talk why this game cant be competitive because of maps
well you play vs same 4 survs, in same way, but 1 game is on coal tower (without fun window open) and 2nd game is on cowshed with fun window open or on haddonfield(BL is meta btw) so lets talk about map RNG vs competitiveness lets take best killer map coal tower, but it can have fun window opened or closed, it can have 6 more pallets than coal tower you played game ago. so tell me how the ######### you want to make that competitive? tell me game with that crazy map RNG that can be competitive
and lets finish with 1 DBD tournament that DBD devs made.... (if i remember correctly it was without add ons without perks) sooo every killer was nurse and all survs were P3 claudettes (or brown clothes)... and it was "where is waldo" gameplay
this game isnt competitive, if you think it is, devs made a good job baiting you into competitiveness to make you play this game more xd

The ranking system doesn't work, high level play is completely imbalanced, and the meta also has to try and account for things like Styptics and Ebonies.
If DBD is supposed to be a competitive game instead of a party game, then they've been failing for over 3 years now.

No it's not.
How can it be competitive when it's asymmetrical? For a game to be competitive it has to be balanced and in this game there will never be such a thing unless there are some preset rules which can only happen in a tournament or something that has to be organized and is not something that you can do in the main game.

This game is a casual party game. You are trying to change the meaning of 'competitive " in this context.
1. Competitive online gaming is referred to when talking about games where sponsored tournaments or esports get involved. DBD has never had such a tourney and likely never will due to there being no fair way to balance the game for it.
2. By the above examples of "competitive", NES' Mario Brothers fits in. Heck, any game that has had a vs mode fits in. PTO tournament anyone? No, that is not a competitive game measuring point. Paper football is more competitive than DBD by gaming standards. Unless you are in an SWF, you don't know if you will stand a chance. Get a team of potatoes for partners and you're hosed. Get a coordinated SWF and the killer is hosed. Not going to work in the competitive world of esports.
3. Due to the imbalances mentioned above, there is really only one reason to play this game, for fun and laughs. I've assisted in setting up game-cons in St. Louis, Phoenix, Atlanta and Detroit. DBD would never get past round 1. It would immediately be categorized as a party game with a niche genre. That is not a bad thing. But you can't build a prize-based tournament around it with any level of fairness.
4. Before people start talking about Smash being casual, yet competitive, keep in mind that it is also much more of a symmetrical game. Though some characters may tend to be op, most are decently balanced and that is why there are huge tournaments and even sponsored contenders who participate. DBD will never fall in that category.
5. The ranking system, according to the devs, is mainly to allow new players to progress. It is not an enforced and official system. It is too fluid and subject to manipulation.
DBD is a casual game. Having a vs concept does not put it in the realm of a competitive gaming category. Just enjoy

It's competitive in the way that there's winners and losers.
It's by no means a game it makes any sense to take as "competitive" in the same way as esports-oriented games. Going into it with that sort of mindset is just setting yourself up for pointless frustration.

We're totally E-Sports ready dude...
t o t a l l y . . .

It's PvP so it can be made seen as competative but the devs generally use the words fun and engaging and not competative.
No matter what someoneone wants to view it as it's a grind game. Ranks only real purpose is for matchmaking and so you feel like you are progressing towards something to hide the grind behind.

Guys, competitiveness is not equal to "balanced, RNG-free and fair enough to host its own E-sport event". It's a relatively simple word, meaning players play AGAINST each other as opposed to playing cooperatively. Whether the game is BALANCED or not is a whole different question, and not the one Gardenia asked in the original post.

Any activity is competitive when two sides are facing each other pursuing mutually exclusive goals.
But if you mean, e-sport competitive, no.
