Oblivious on Freddy is problematic

With the 3.2.0 update a number of changes were introduced, one of which was a change to Freddy which was the addition of the oblivious effect to sleeping survivors. While this change was likely a way to experiment with the new status effects, it comes with some drawbacks which hinders the quality of the match and here is why ;

The problem comes directly from the oblivious effect. While Freddy's base kit did not change at all, the oblivious effect causes issues specifically with Object of Obsession and Borrowed Time.

Let's start off with Object of Obsession. The way the perk functions is that while you're outside of the terror radius of the killer, you can see their aura and the killer can see your aura while you're looking at them within a maximum of a 72 meter range. Because oblivious makes it so terror radius based perks no longer function, the restriction of Object of Obsession not working in the terror radius no longer applies making the perk always work against Freddy, thus eliminating any and all mindgame potential on a sleeping survivor allowing for no other option to the killer other than to run the tile in one specific way. Without mindgames your chances of ending a chase quickly drops unless the survivor gets greedy. The change to apply oblivious to sleeping survivors punishes you for utilizing part of your power.

The other problem is that while Freddy gets completely destroyed by Object of Obsession, he ends up completely destroying Borrowed Time because as mentioned before, oblivious makes terror radius based perks or restrictions go inactive. Even if a survivor wakes themselves up and performs the save, it creates a new problem where now the saved survivor has been hit by Freddy, is in deep wounds yet is also sleeping causing a scenario where no matter what the survivor does, they will go down without any counterplay similarly to old Legion thus ignoring the purpose of the perk.

While Borrowed Time can be fixed by changing the perk to be based off of how close the killer is rather than the terror radius, the big problem comes with the fact that Object of Obsession ignores the point of oblivious. If I understand the new status effects correctly, oblivious is meant to make it so only specific survivors cannot hear the terror radius and informs them that this is the case, yet it provides a straight up buff to Object of Obsession to killers that utilize this status effect as it always remains active. I believe that for the time being, oblivious should be removed from Freddy's kit or that changes should be made to how these perks interact with this status effect in order to provide a better experience to more players.

I haven't even considered the OoO issue, that's hilarious. It seems like Behaviour either intends this functionality (which seems... very odd), or they're just not great at flagging these kinds of knock-on effects during development.

It's an embarrassing mistake either way, since one might assume this sort of interaction would be immediately obvious during implementation. Like, do they not have a spreadsheet somewhere that lists stuff that interacts with the Terror Radius?

I genuinely never understood all these status effect changes. the core of the problem was playing stealth killers and people having OoO, just nerf it a little bit lmao

I don't believe you understood what I was getting at. However, before I clarify my point I must point out that with the recent changes I actually managed to go against a Freddy with OoO and looped him without any threat of being downed because there was no mindgames that the killer could've performed.

To clarify my point from my original post however, it doesn't become a matter of "can Freddy handle it", it becomes a matter of "is this good design?". If a player has OoO and they're against Freddy with the current oblivious effect, you eliminate any and all mindgame possibilities because you constantly see the killer which is the exact reason why the coldwind maze tiles got changed as they featured the same problem. Secondly, this creates a new problem where BT can no longer accomplish its intended job which will promote tunneling as when the survivor has deep wounds and is oblivious, they cannot do anything and will go down no matter what they do.

It's also important to note that if it's a big deal on Freddy, it will be even worse for other killers that could possibly pick up on the oblivious effect in the future such as in their base kit, by the means of addons or perks as they will also suffer the same exact problems.

I'm gonna cry if they do that to Ghostface and Wraith.

I agree. We're nerfing a bunch of unnecessary perks, that weren't good already or at best mediocre

Im with @DudeDelicious on this one. I welcome a full team of OoO users to stare at me with 0 TR. While mindgames are always nice, Freddy can still get ya just fine even when you can clearly see every move he makes.

I was saying this is a bad idea since when the Oblivious status was leaked and it was said Freddy's Dream World would have it.

BT not working when it needs to is a problem. Unlike other "stealth" killers that can suppress their TR, Freddy has no counter play other than "wake up" which may not exactly be an option. Wraith has to decloak and can be burned by flashlights. GF's shroud can be broken and his stealth removed. Pig has to stand up or do ambush, both of which give the hooked player a chance to get away. But Freddy has none of that. If you are asleep, it just doesn't work. He could be right behind you. What's worse is that he can put you to sleep just by hitting you.

OOO being a problem is just icing on the cake. Oblivious doesn't need to be a thing when asleep. It let's Freddy using TR perks, and let's survivors use TR perks. Having a killer where literally half the time perks won't work is a bad idea. This stuff was broken on him before because of how the old Freddy worked. Then they fixed it with the rework, now they don't work again. It's one thing for perks to be better or worse for/against a killer, but for them to be useless as killer or inconsistent against killers that's bad design.

This coming from a Freddy player, both old and new. Freddy is plenty strong right now he doesn't need this buff.

Those killers already have Oblivious. I was rescued yesterday by a teammate using Borrowed Time against a Ghost Face. Due to the buggy vision mechanics, I could not break his cloak even by staring at him, and in the end he was chasing but didn't hit me. I flopped to the ground and realized I had no time to Mend Wounds while being chased, and apparently it was ticking down once he used his power to remove TR.

I'm very happy with it. There's VERY little reason to put the time into waking up against Freddy, almost none in the end game. This at least adds a powerful motivator to try to not be asleep which is great for the time dynamic of the game.

I believe they are more likely to give the undetectable status effect to killers like GhostFace instead, which makes survivors who run detection perks really up their awareness.

That's what the @Peanits meant when he said that you gain a little and you lose a little...
