Why does DBD have a ranking system if its a casual game

The only reason i can think of is so that better players don't dumpster new players

In fact that is the only reason

    Is it a casual game?

Like, is that a stated aspect of its design?

In the sense that there is no measure of overall success other than rank, and there are no rewards or consequences for being a certain rank, it is what one could call casual.

As for the OP, the reason it has ranks is purely for matchmaking purposes, so that players can be matched (in theory) with others of roughly their skill level, so that games are more fun and balanced all around.

Okay... that seems a bit arbitrary.

I regularly see discussions about how many hundreds or thousands of hours are expected to be considered good at this game, how the game's grind is viewed as an acceptable price of admission for "investing" in it, etc.

It would seem to me that a "casual" game would be more accessible, have unranked play as an option, not require going through things like the teachable perk system which necessitate a nontrivial investment of both money and time.

It seems like this game goes from casual to competitive and back again according to who's talking and what point they're trying to make.

I mean it's a competitive game, people play against eachother and one side winning means the other side is losing. But more and more people seem to associate the word "competitive" with the esports-based balancing philosophy that you see in many other games like Overwatch, CSGO and more.

DBD is not like that, and never will be. Ranks are a matchmaking variable and nothing else as far as the game is concerned. It might not be perfect, but usually it at least tries to prevent extreme edge cases like rank 1 vs rank 20 and the like, which is a good thing by itself.

Even if a game is casual it doesn't mean players can't be better or worse at it.

just get rid of the ranking system. some people play to get to number 1. if it was gone then it wouldn't matter about sorting people out into matchmaking groups. people could play more for fun and then it wouldn't be so competitive. wouldn't really matter if we won or loose. surely games would load faster too.

Without matchmaking, severely lopsided matches are way more likely, causing people to have less fun and be less inclined to stick around.
