Is this game dying?
So im currently asking this question because a lot of my friends (irl and on steam) has just stoping playing this game after terrible updates like the update that came with the demi. I personally as well stoping playing cuz most match as survivor or killer is nearly unplayable. When i play as killer most just dc if they go down which is thxs to the terrible idea from the devs which is making dcing loss 1 pip instead of 2. Like who stupid idea was it to make dcing loss less pips it make the game very unplayable. Even when i play survivor most just dc which means most matches end with 2 minutes or less.
Another problem i see with the game is the swf thing they change, now if your friend is higher level than the game looks for higher level killers which means 2 things. 1 you cant play with your friends if your rank below purple and 2 your friend has to dc a lot of times to be on the same level as you. The old way was much better than this work and it worked out a lot better.Dedicated servers are as well just absolutely trash. In theory dedicated servers would be great for a game like dbd but somehow dbd has just f it up. I see so many broken hits i can barley play. It happens even when i have the best ping. Its as well not just me, i see a lot of youtubers, streamers and my friends encountering these problems.
The way i see it is dbd is heading down like deathgarden is which is a dead game. They cancel the event like just a day before it was suppose to relase and didnt give a reason why which mean we might get the event in December during christmas which isnt what we want a halloween even in christmas.
Why are they nerfing insta heals but making medkits a good as insta heals. Like they nerf a good survivor item add on but fail to nerf an op killer offering which is ebony mori. Great job devs anything else you want to f up while we are at it?
For me and my friends we see the devs as being not good with coding cuz we see a lot of issues happening when they release new stuff. I just want to know devs are you going to make dead by daylight dead like deathgarden>

Let's see.
If they really release the upcoming Halloween event AFTER Halloween?
Yeah Id say the game is dying.

Growth is stagnant.
The average player count over the last 30 days is only just over 20k. Which means after stranger things, the free weekend, the bloodhunt, the number of players peaked at 48k during that time and it can be assumed that the 28k players stopped playing dbd and moved on to something else.
The game isn't good at retaining players so players get tired of dbd for various reasons and after various amounts of playtime and leave.
New players come in and buy a dlc or two or leave due to the barrier to entry.
While the game isn't dying, it doesn't make itself easy to stick with.
Eventually, it's reputation will precede it and new players may not give the game a try. That's when the bleeding playerbase will become very noticeable.
But cheer up!
The devs are focusing on new monetization tactics to squeeze every last dime from players before they leave to play something else ;)

The game is quite alive on console, especially on Xbox after it went on game pass. PC doesn't seem so lucky but I can't speak for people on there.

This game is very much alive on PS4. I can get into a lobby as killer literally instantly most times. Survivor is a minute or two tops.

Idk how losing pip is a punishment? It's a reward lmao. Then you end up with P3's bullying rank 20 killers/survivors but what can I know about game design?

This game seems to have a somewhat small but very loyal player base. They should be focusing on balance changes and responding to feedback. They need to make their loyal base feel appreciated. Instead they are implementing these dedicated servers and this battle pass, both disasters in their own right, which do quite the opposite. A Halloween event that will probably occur after Halloween is just one more issue.

That's not entirely true.
While the peak is pretty stagnant on average (it's been hitting roughly 25k since last year) thats just a number the game sits at. Look at most game numbers the stagnant peaks don't shift much and those that arent brining in new players tend to drop rather than be stagnant.
Peaks can't be taken into account and while it may peak at 48k when a dlc or dbp event is on its highly unlikely the whole 28k players left, some will of course. The most logical reason is that people tend to simply play more for those periods so it artificially increases the peak numbers.
Games retaining players is actually an anomaly today and why the vast majority drop off so fast. Any game which stays with a viable playerbase even stagnant for a long time is going against that grain in reality in todays market so is actually doing extremely well.

Cya, we'll be fine without your negative comments

I don't think the game is dying. We all complain about certain things but it's because we love DBD

Well, since the last update I don't play much anymore, I just go in daily to check if the servers have already been deactivated.
I like the game, but they say it seems that they are only interested in squeezing money, the Halloween event should have been ready with at least a month, but hey, they are not skins that they can sell (the skins always punctual).

Not everyone enjoy playing against potatoes to have easy games.

Do you have any numbers or is this just grabbed from the air?

Steam charts said the numbers were dropping. *shrug *

There are a LOT of Looking For Group posts, but no, no definite numbers. I would guess, probably more than Steam, less than PS4

Same with me on PS4. I just really hope it stays this way and I'm concerned by this post. I literally just started playing the game 6 weeks ago and haven't had as much fun as this since the first Left 4 Dead game. I'd be crushed if it slowly starts dying over the next few months.

Mostly from Air, but it seems to be alive on PS4 as well since I usually get lobbies instantly on both sides and rarely see the same people honestly.
2 -
I do because it's lowering the players retention ;)

No numbers. It's based on my own experiences. Queue times went way down after Dbd was added to the game pass. I can find killer matches virtually instantly. Survivor takes maybe a minute at most. I see new people every game and I've been playing for nearly a year now.

There's a fair chunk more players coming in compared to the amount leaving.
Also the true meaning of 'leaving' is different. I've been playing less the last month in anticipation of the update. I think more people play dbd in bursts rather than consistently.
I can't be bothered analysing the stats.

Game isn't dying. Population of people playing is pretty constant and consistent, and has been for like the past two years.
Which is an amazing thing in and of itself.

Yeah, yet last month it went up.
The game has been hovering around the 2k mark for a year now. There will always be ebbs and flows, but there is no greater trend of it dropping. In fact, the bigger trend is it's growing. 2018 the average was closer to 12k than 20k.

Wasn't last month when they released the demogorgon? Stranger things hype and all. I think the + correlates to the DLC's dropping. Not sure.

Its not dying.

If you go on to Twitch and sort by popularity, DBD is surprisingly always quite high up the list (considering its age). It shows that there is still plenty of interest in it.
It helps that it is so unique Online - FPS games will come and go but nobody has come up with anything that can challenge DBD in whatever genre it would sit in.

At this time no
The event was never specified as a "Halloween event", but just Withering Blight
We called it a halloween event so this can start whenever

I hope devs at least photoshop the pumpkins to look like Thanksgiving turkeys or Christmas Puddings!

In some cases, but not all. I checked the DLC release dates from the past year, and the playerbase appears to go up and down irrespective of DLC releases. It's possible that other things like sales, free weekends and general publicity (like if a high-profile review site or YouTuber brings attention to it) also play a role, but in any case overall it does seem to be fairly steadily hovering around that 20k mark.

The number of players is pretty constant. But what we can say now: The Stranger Things license did not increase the number of players permanently.
(If you remember, we were discussing this issue last month with worry - that despite having a great new license, new players would get scared off by the at-that-time very bad matchmaking and other issues.)
