Another Rift another realisation that it's not worth the time and effort.
The last month or two I've been trying to play more dbd to progress as much as I could in the rift.
No matter how much time you play, long matchmaking times makes it just too Grundy in itself to find matches, let alone progressing in the rift.
I did think "hmm what a nice charm" towards some of the late premium unlockable a but I honestly don't see a point of charms even existing.
Charms are way more pretty when you click and zoom into them. It's something novelty which you can hardly see. Like getting a fancy haircut but shaving it all off.
Even on Console it takes about 4 minutes to get into a match once you find yourself in a lobby. It's almost instant on PC.
Every little delay or inconvenience to general playing the game makes me not want to bother with the rift. Exactly the reason I didn't buy the premium pass this time.
Even the fancy stuff in the rift has no significance to me because I know a ton of people will still have it unlocked and equipped when I play Vs them.
Unless the rift progression is more accessible to people who have insane waits for a match or something really convenient happens, I won't buy another rift at all.
It seems unfair how in game time is the source of the playtime which grants you the xp when you could have dbd up and running for over an hour and not be able to gain xp eventhough it's supposed to be 70hrs of game time is enough to complete the rift. Just seems like a major miscalculation which tricks people into thinking they put enough time into dbd to get the rift fully complete only to be told "oh yeah, we only count the time you were alive in a match. Not the length of each playsession".

you aren't forced to do it, homie.

I play the game a lot. And I like the tome challenges so completing the Rift was a nice bonus. I didn’t worry about it, just something nice to complete in the background.
And I only bought the pass after I hit level 70 because I wasn’t gonna commit the auric cells unless I knew I’d get them back

Their point is that they want to get through the rift but can't due to the amount of grind required to get through in addition to the wait time between matches.
Reading comprehension is an important skill.

I don't understand why they need yo make the battle pass this grindy.

Money.

Also remember they gave PC a two week head start the first run.

Simple, and yet the most reasonable reason.

It's not just about Money. It's also about to bind the playerbase to your product as much as possible. A strategy all live-services follows. Stuff like regular updates/releases are also part of this. I mean you see it, when the playerbase has a slight spike as soon as a new tome level releases e.g.

I don't think the battlepass is extremely grindy, it is for sure really grindy but the grind depends on how much you are stuck waiting to get into Lobbys and loaded into games.
In simple terms 70hours playing dbd is equivalent to about 15 hours of matches if you add in the time you are left to wait, gaining no xp for playing the game.

Because devs bad.

Which means...? More money.
It really is just about money, if it wasn't about money and simply player engagement and retention the battlepass would have one track and be free.

The waiting around is exactly the reason why I'm playing slay the Spire right now and not dbd.

Yeah, but saying it's about money isn't a satisfying answer. Binding the player to the product is.

so you buy it, you know you can rush through it if you pay for it right?
But yes the grind is way too much, its uncomfortable.

Once I get the elephant suit, I won't bother actively pushing forward with the battlepass.

True, and not everyone can put in the time needed to complete everything. Time is limited for those who have families, jobs, adult responsibilities, ect.

I'd care less about only the most hardcore players completing the rift if the cosmetics (particularly the free tier) were more abundant and better.
Seeing someone with a rare cosmetic and knowing they earned it is cool. Seeing someone with a rare cosmetic and knowing they bought it is lame.
Also, the solution to long wait times is to play more killer. Except nobody wants to do that, given the completely useless matchmaking, the non-viability of many killer characters, how the maps are imbalanced, and that there are so many toxic bully survivors (sure, not everyone, but I get at least a pair every other match, usually, and I'm nowhere near red tanks). It's an objectively worse experience that drives off a vital part of the player base.
