What happens if you buy a cosmetic for a killer you don't have?

I have been wondering what happens when you buy a cosmetic for a killer you don't have? Do you get the killer afterwards or?...

  You can purchase cosmetics for a character before buying said character, but you won't be able to use them until after you have bought the character. So no, it doesn’t unlock it.

  If you want to get technical than yes, it does unlock the cosmetic until you own the character.

  But yeah, you won't be able to use a cosmetic for a character you don't even own.
