Why does the EGC happen when the exit gates are open and not when the final gen is completed?

We're both talking about End Game Countdown.
You stated that EGC's purpose is to "prevent hostage situations in which survivors could hide indefinitely. With the introduction of the EGC, you dont have to worry about such a situation. That's all its meant to do."
I'm saying that EGC's not fullfilling its purpose as you described; it's only shifting the way Survivors take the game hostage.

The topic of the thread is about the end of the match though and survivors not feeling enough pressure. If the discussion is talking about if EGC should start after the 5th gen is done rather than the gates open...we're not talking about a hostage situation anymore.

The topic is about the End Game's purpose.
What? You're allowed to talk about hostage situations, but not me? TF?

The original statement was
The whole point of the collapse is to put pressure on the survivors to get out of the game, stopping the endless starring contests that would happen if the killer caught a survivor after the gates were open. But the current implementation of the EGC seems counterproductive.
My reply to that was basicly to say "nuh uh". Now you can argue all ya want that hostage situations are still possible, I'm not gonna deny that. My original statement was simply to correct the point of the EGC.

Do you think the EGC should be changed to better fit the purpose I originally thought it had?
It would certainly make the end game more engaging.

The only thing I would change about it would be to allow the killer to open the gates at any point in the trial. I have no problem for gameplay to continue after the last gen pops. Its abit of a pain in the ass though when theres 5 gens to go and you have a team hiding in bushes refusing to even TOUCH a gen. After searching every locker on the map for 10 minutes...I'd wanna just be able to open the gates and move to the next match.

With the way gates spawn so close together any killer with noed could just patrol back and forth and keep people off the gate until the Entity takes them.
So you basically want to punish survivors for finishing gens.

It's rare for the gates to spawn close together. Even rarely to also have the NOED right next to them for easy protection.
Your argument is based off the killer having insane rng and the survivors not doing totems.

It happens more often than you think if you play survivor enough. The point still stands that this would basically punish survivors for completing gens and eliminate what is probably the most interesting part of the game...the period between gens done and exit gate opened when the most exciting saves are done or at least attempted.

It does not happen more than I think. It's unlikely as hell and your point is void. You're just remembering the unlucky games and forgetting the good ones because of the negativity bias that people have.
Ignoring that, changing the EGC timer to proc on the final gen is absolutely not punishing survivors for doing gens. It's making the most boring part of the game, where often survivors have a very small chance to lose, and make it actually engaging.
Contrary to what you say, going for a save when the gates are open is often not very exciting, as the gates are open and escape for the survivors is all but ensured, while the killer has to camp for 2 minutes or more to secure the kill. This is not fun for most people.
Adding in that count-down timer would now make saves actually risky and would encourage killers to try and down as many people as they can, wasting the survivor's time in the process.

They made the EGC start when the survivors choose (unless the killer wants to give up all their pressure) and still allow survivors a certain period of teabagging time because they knew the survivors would be mad if all of it was taken away, and needed to be appeased.
Relax before any of you get mad, I'm joking. At least half-joking.

I think i would like this purelly based on how more excitting it would be. Timer has to be adjusted obviously but still
I know current EGC isn't meant to pressure survivors. But maybe it should
I would prefer that then a "egc" at the early game tbh
Give the early game to the survivors and the late game to the killers

I believe it can do both, irregardless if it’s original intentions.

You can open gates to force them to escape as a killer.

I think EGC is fine the way it is. Survivors already completed their main objective and the killer couldn’t stop them from getting to that point, so I’m not sure that more pressure should be put on the survivors in that case. Killers still have a chance at success in the endgame, especially with NOED, so I think it’s fine right now.

If I was a dev I would suggest just add a slow regression to the gate. This way someone might have to stay by the gate to make sure it remains 99 if the team needs time to rescue someone and killer can also camp the gate to have a chance to make it regress a little bit.

Well it shouldn't be both.
