Trail of Torment in regards to the Q&A.
In the latest Q&A stream, Orion asked a question, as to why Trail of Torment shows survivors the kicked gen's aura, the response was that the devs wanted to let survivors know that something even happened, in order to avoid frustration and confusion.
That's a solid point, but it makes the way you designed the perk fundamentally flawed.
While that's a valid way of designing perks in general, in this case the perk's effect isn't enough to justify it, this perk currently reads "Show survivors your location.", 90% of the time that's it. Not only is it straight up not strong enough, Trail of Torment's very effect directly contradicts the design philosophy you entailed with it.
Since undetectable is the only status effect that depends on being unnoticed, that depends on not letting survivors know something is happening, that depends on surprising survivors, giving away your location while getting the status is just stupid, stupid and unsatisfying from the user's perspective, it's also the reason why simply extending the status' duration is not the way to go
I see 2 solutions:
- Simply delete the aura reveal. The design philosophy itself isn't wrong, it's the way you misinterpreted how it'll affect a stealth perk that made it the mess it is.
- Rework the perk with the idea of "letting survivors know" for a higher payoff in mind. I suggest 16 seconds of haste, since it's simple and effective, but Im sure other things could work too.
I love the current Trail of Torment's idea, in general I think more killers should get access to Undetectability, so I'd much rather see the 1st proposed change implemented, but Im curious to hear what you guys think, both the devs and the community. Cheers :)

I get the idea that survivors should probably be made aware that the killer is roaming while Undetectable, but there's a very simple way to make it work with this idea in mind: instead of making the killer Undetectable, have all survivors become Oblivious and remove the aura.
It's the same idea, survivors still become aware that the killer could come from anywhere at any moment, but now they know that they won't hear the terror radius or see the red stain.
EDIT: So as not to distract or detract from this thread, I created my own - https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/162622/trail-of-torment-and-the-q-a

That's actually very smart ! I kinda tunnel visioned the idea of Undetectable, and completely forgot about the Oblivious effect, I love this change mate :D

Thank you and thank you for opening this thread. I was going to do it when I wasn't feeling so lazy, so you saved me some time. :P

Please make an official feedback about this change, that would be an excellent rework of this perk and I would fully support it.

What if, instead of an aura, you simply give a sound notification when the perk is activated? Like somebody missing a skill check on the gen. Survivors are notified that something occurred there, but aren't sure what.

The first reply has already suggested the perfect change. Nice job.

Thank you, but I opened my own thread to try to make sure the devs see it.

They could have just done what they do with perks that apply the exposed status affect like noed and put it on their screen that they are oblivious. It won't tell you where the killer is but will at least let you know to be careful.

Maybe they could extend the duration of the undetectable,if nothing else. Then he has the chance to make some ground. I will say,in the right situation,it can scare the crap out of a person. I feel like maybe some people thought it was highlighted for a different reason. I have seen it work out,but I agree, some kind of change does seem in order.

Personally, I'd keep the aura on the gen but change the way the perk works slightly. Instead of Trail giving Undetectable for a certain duration, you could make it so the killer becomes Undetectable until the gen that it activated on stops regressing. This would make it so the survivors know that the killer is now Undetectable and would also make it so they would effectively have a second objective they would need to do. On top of that, it would not only help the killer sneak up on people but it would also let the killer know when someone was working on that gen again, since you would lose your Undetectable.

I think this idea is nice, but why not have the effect grant oblivious AND undetectable for the same time period. This way, OoO or aura reading perks or keys can't grant you the ability to see the killer. This way, survivors KNOW Trail of Torment is active but not where, and SWFs can't use OoO during the duration of the perk's activity. The overlap is subtle, but having both wouldn't be a crazy power boost.

Imagine if red herring, insidious or diversion got the same kind of downside ? Look stupid, right ?
