Thoughts from a New Player
Hey All,
So I recently started playing DBD during the fourth anniversary and quickly become a killer main, which I found a lot of fun at first. I quick made my way to rank 9/8 and that's where I'm currently stuck. I'd like to list the things I've started to find frustrating from my point of view.
Progression
- XP - When the big XP event was going on I really liked playing, I started with the The Cannibal because chainsaw, and felt that progression felt great! I was earning a ton of bloodpoints, which was letting me unlock these awesome new perks and progress through the game. Now that the event is over it feels like progressing through the bloodweb is a mess, especially with how bloated it gets when you start to pick up extra killer perks. I now feel like I'm left behind compared to the survivors I'm going up against perk wise and the end of that grinding tunnel seems vast with the amount of killers there are.
- Rank System - This is another big issue in my eyes. When I started I had few perks, and the survivors I went up against had few perks, this felt very balanced to me, my progression seemed to match the survivors I was facing. Now that I'm in what the rank system has determined to be my proper ranking I frequently go up against survivor match-ups that I can't understand why matching against them. Why at killer rank 8 do I regularly (it seems to be around 70% if not more) see rank 4-1 survivors? Why does the matchmaking not have at least a rank average to make sure that at least the survivor ranks average my killer rank?
Perks
- Limited Usable Perks - What I've come to find, and sadly didn't realise when I was first 'completing' killer bloodwebs, is that there are limited usable perks. It seems that I always have to pick at least one generator regression perk or progression halting perk like Pop or Corrupt Intervention because they just get finished so incredibly fast. Perks like Trail of Torment in my eyes are useless, I get 16 seconds of maybe invisibility unless they have a perk that counters it, and in return they get to know exactly where I am? Who thought that was a good idea for the killer? Why does it not highlight 3 nearby generators at random after let's say 3 seconds? On the same hand, I often see survivors running basically the same 6-8 perks, this is something that really needs to be looked at, as it in my mind ruins what could be interesting and unique gameplay, and replaces it with perk checkbox, which I find myself going through on new killers.
- Survivor 'Second-Chance' Perks - That little title is going to immediately upset some people, but it should! In the same way as people get upset when they feel tunneled, or when a killer camps a hook. Moving past that, I feel there are two many second chance perks. Most importantly I feel like to many of the perks can be stacked without a downside. I think that's pretty wild, and while it may make the survivor feel awesome and strong it's incredibly frustrating as a killer to win a chase, or catch a survivor and whoops, I actually lose because a perk I can't see (if more than one person is running anything related to obsessions). And that is to say if they do actually run, instead of hopping in a cabinet, or using a gen. That is so so frustrating. Innocent looking perks like Sprint Burst also have this issue for me, I'm able to get very close to a survivor, sneak up to them, get almost close enough for a hit and boom they're a football field away. Also Object is a real dumb perk that should be removed, it's absurd, the entity is gonna give a survivor a power, get that ######### outta here.
In-Match
- Generator Speed/Difficulty - It seems to me, from a killer perspective, the generators go to quickly and are too easy. If the survivor team isn't playing altruistically, I've found I don't really have a chance to win on some killers, either their setup takes so long that by the end of the game I will get maybe a single person. Overall, I feel generators need to be slowed down, whether that be introducing pieces of generators that need to be scavenged from crates.
- Flashlight Spamming - To be honest flashlights are the most frustrating out of all items. If I see four toolboxes going into a match? Well I'm probably gonna lose that one, I know I'm not at the skill level to counter that properly. But flashlights? If I see four of them I back out of the match, I've learned that I'm gonna get button spammed, which is super frustrating when it's complimented by teabagging, I know if I get caught out I'm gonna get blinded forever, and most likely that group is a swf team who are there to grief killers. I would love if there was a chance of a flashlight breaking if the button was flicked in rapid succession, something to curb that. I do understand that it's super useful for distracting killers, but I think there should be some trade off there.
- General Map Size - There are some maps that I feel are way to big for a killer to do anything on them, and once I realise that I'm on one of those maps (since I don't really know most maps by name right now), I feel like there's not much I can do, I'm just immediately down 2 generators because I can't react to anything quick enough and cross map fast enough. And that makes me realise why Oni is so dominant, I'm not good at using him yet but being able to cross a map what felt like instantly is incredible, but just exacerbates the problem to me.
- The Big One SFW - I am all for playing with your friends in a group, that's a great idea, and I'm sure is very fun in a 4v1 scenario, it keeps people who really want to play with their friends in the game for those who don't want to do 5 player customs. But I feel that in groups the game can get very one-sided, and balancing that is difficult because nobody wants to alienate a part of the user-base. But, something needs to be done, maybe make it so that when in groups, scaling from 2>3>4 make some perks unusable, also just remove Object as it's borderline useless solo and ridiculously powerful when in a group. I can see that just by playing Killer side.
So there's my random 2am write-up after playing some games tonight, I'm sure I'll think of more or revise my thoughts as I gain more experience. Let me know what y'all think.
Cheers

These issues have plagued the game since its release, and some have just gotten worse with time. If the devs fixed these, then the game would be perfectly fine. But i doubt they will. Nice mock-up of everything tho ;)

I think it's a pretty good review for a new player. If flashlights are a problem, before lifting someone, first make sure someone is not around with a flashlight. A tip would be to pretend that you are going to grab the survivor.

Great write-up. Sadly as the other person said, these issues have been going on forever and I don’t expect BHVR to do anything about them any time soon.

No offense to you but your a prime example of how bad the ranking system is. At max you've been playing this game a month, yet your already rank 8. From the games pov your already near red ranks, after just 1 month.
You shouldn't be anywhere near rank 8. I don't mean that to be horrible but you haven't played enough to get properly good as killer. Your not equipped to deal with the challenges your rank gave you but the game doesn't care. It's want to show it's rewarding players even if it's too soon.

I think the thing about second-chance perks is that the survivors only really have those perks which are worth bringing. Every surv perk is either ridiculously strong or horribly weak. I think the devs should be buffing the lesser-used perks so the meta can shift.

Yeah, matchmaking is broken right now. You'll get Red Ranks even if you're a Rank 20 Killer. They're making a new system and are going to introduce it at some point?
I wanna say, with Trails of Torment, you get Undetectable. It does what it sounds like, the Survivors can't see you. You have no Terror Radius, Red Stain and they can't see you with any aura reading abilities. You are still visible, but Survivors have no way to track you with the exception of actually seeing you or with perks like Spine Chill, which only tells you when you're looking at them within a certain distance.
If you power level certain Killers (or get them in the Shrine of Secrets in the store) you can get perks that make repairing gens harder. Like Ruin, Corrupt Intervention, etc.
With Second Chance perks, both sides need them. NOED is a notable one for Killers, Blood Warden too if you can Hook someone during the EGC.
One tip about Flashlights i can give you, look up or down and they can't really get you. In the upcoming update (which reworks Leatherface and the Hillbilly slightly) there's going to be a change to Lightborn (a Hillbilly Perk) that will make you immune to flashlights and firecrackers.
