Casual Gameplay, Please: An Update On My Deranking Friend
First of all, this is the first time I've been back on the forums since my original topic which totally blew up, people were insulting each other and it got closed as a result. Since I didn't get the chance to reply to my own thread, my intention with this topic is to clarify a few things on what I was actually trying to say. I'm not trying to outdo the system, so if this isn't allowed because it's linked to a topic that was already closed, my apologies and feel free to close this one too.
So first of all, my friend was playing survivor, not killer. So disconnecting didn't boot everyone from the game, it just made things harder for them. I'd also like to make it clear once again that I totally understand why deranking is a bad thing and how it impacts other players negatively. I'm not saying it should be done. My issue is that it's currently the only solution to a serious problem. The fact that it's the only solution IS part of the problem. I'm not defending my friend, I'm lamenting that there was no way for him to play the game at a casual level without hurting other people's experience.
This comment from @altruistic in the other thread basically summed it up:
"I’ll take my one week vacation. It seems a DC ban wave has gone out.
I hope one day they’ll make it a lot harder to rank up, or remove the safety PIP.
I never DC from my Killer games, and I’ll leave my killer at R1.
I don’t want to play R1 Survivor, or anywhere near it. **I didn’t sign up for DBD Worlds eSports, and a lot of people in this realm believe that’s what they’re playing. It’s not fun. **
Give us casual mode."
DBD World eSports. Therein lies the problem. People at high ranks tend to be salty, toxic, and take the game way too seriously. There's a reason I stopped playing ranked League after like 2 games. People like that are horrible to play with and it's just not fun. Players shouldn't feel like they have to derank, breaking the rules and hurting others' experience in the process, just to have fun.
On that note, another clarification: he wasn't having fun at lower ranks because people were new and he could troll them, it was because people at that rank are actually nice to each other most of the time and he just wanted to be part of that. Which again, doesn't excuse the negative impact he had on other people's games, especially the killers, just because he was skilled above his rank, but it does indicate that there's a problem.
To summarise what I'm trying to say:
- It needs to be harder to rank up so that people don't find themselves in a community they don't want to be part of,
- Or even better, casual unranked play needs to be introduced. I'm not a game developer, so perhaps I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to make another gamemode which is the same in every respect except that it doesn't affect your rank. Like a cross between current ranked play and KYF.
I would like to hear people's thoughts, but please be kind and don't insult each other so we can have an actual discussion this time.

The problem with having a casual mode is that the devs would then have to flesh out the entire ranked mode, or else nobody would play it. And if there was a casual mode, it wouldn't lead to exactly why most people derank in the first place, roflstomping just about anyone you come across. Or, in the event that this casual mode becomes popular enough, there will be more than enough vets in the pool to make it so that you'll still hit the good, salty, try hard that are at high ranks right now who are derankijg to get easier matches. I can see why people would want one, but it's not fixing any of your problems.1
-
We all know how this thread will end up.

I see your point @Cetren but I think the main reason people are rude and tryhard in rank is because it's ranked. If there's no goal to work towards in casual play, I think a lot of people wouldn't feel the need to get upset with their teammates because they don't lose anything (except items I suppose, which could be a problem.) It's not about the people themselves, it's about addressing why they get so salty in the first place. In most cases, I don't believe that it's just who they are as a person and would translate to anything they played.
With regard to fleshing out ranked mode, that's true and I didn't think of that, but I do think that casual play should be more of a priority than ranked. If no one's playing ranked, it's probably because they would rather play casual, so I feel like the devs should be catering to the needs of the community in that sense.
1 -
@ChesterTheMolester we do? You mean people will just fight each other and the thread will descend into chaos, or...?

A similar idea, of separating ranked and casual, was suggested on the Steam forums over a year ago, and since then that thread has grown into the largest thread in DbD Steam forums history, and it's still going. If the devs don't care about the largest thread they've ever seen, even with all the work and effort poured into it by the players, then there's no point to both that thread, or this one that you've made.
The thread:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/381210/discussions/0/1480982338956455265/The thread I linked, contained a similar suggestion to the one that you made, but from the both sides of the subject: the casual side who wants a place to play casually, where they can all get together and have a good time; and the non-casual side who wants a skill-based place of win/loss based on that skill, a place where it's not necessarily the case that 'everyone always wins and we all always have a good time'.
I don't know. It's just discouraging at this point. Not that I intend to discourage you from trying to accomplish something here; I'm just putting this here in case it can help.
Good luck.

Thanks @shootaman777, I appreciate it. I didn't know about that thread, and it sucks that they're not listening to it. I guess my hope is that if there's enough community support they might do something, and every little bit counts. Not to mention, I think they pay more attention to the DBD forum than they do the steam forums at this stage. I do think that it would be amazing if they did implement it, but they're focusing so hard on releasing new content that I don't think optimising their old content is much of a priority at the moment. They're just not big enough to do both at once, and they've already promised the content. Still, I wish there were something else that could be done. I feel like wanting to have fun really isn't too much to ask from a video game, but maybe a community full of normal, polite people is.

the fact of the matter is that your friend is not only a scrub but he is also a selfish coward who doesn't want to face people that shares his rank and doesn't give a fck about his teammates sooo I'm glad he got banned2
-
dc and get banned. this isnt going to change. /thread3
-
@scerckan We're trying to have an actual discussion here, so if you could not go about insulting people that would be great. Also, you missed the point. I've said several times that a) I'm not defending my friend or asking for him to get unbanned, but simply lamenting the fact that there are people like him who feel the need to do that, and b) it had nothing to do with not wanting to face people, he doesn't care about losing, it's about people at high ranks being rude to each other and generally making the game toxic and unfun.
Again, no one is saying he shouldn't have been banned. The point is that his situation is a symptom of a problem with toxicity and people being forced up the ranks who aren't actually good enough or who don't want to play ranked in the first place.3 -
thread reported for discussing bans1
-
@Lowbei as I said to scerckan, this thread is not about his ban. I'm not asking for him to get unbanned, I'm not saying his ban was unjust, and I'm not saying that dc'ing on purpose is a good thing. Please read the post more carefully if you're going to comment on it, and especially if you're going to report it for no good reason. The point of this thread is that there is a problem that needs addressing, and I'm using my friends example as evidence of the fact that people are doing the wrong thing in an attempt to get around the real issue. The solution, therefore, is to address the real issue.

Would love for this to become a thing. Nothing fun about high ranks. At least make it harder to rank up. No way that I belong in rank 1. Game feels so not competitive right now.

@Lowbei Thanks for pointing out the obvious. It's exactly what I just said. I don't want to be at rank 1. I don't belong at rank 1. Yet I am and I can't lose a pip no matter what. How is that a good system? Ohhhhh it's too competitive for you. But every game but DBD has a casual mode. Maybe this is a big reason why DBD had so much hype and lost a huge playerbase within a couple of weeks of launch.
5 -
@Lowbei what part of "This thread isn't about the ban" don't you understand? Mentioning does not equal discussing. In fact, I don't think I even mentioned the ban in this thread, just the fact that he was dc'ing to derank. I'm not discussing it, I'm not contesting it, I didn't even mention it. I was simply using the situation to prove a point.
Also, I believe what @GrannyonAcid was trying to say wasn't that the game was too competitive, quite the opposite. It's too easy to rank up, so getting to rank 1 isn't a real achievement. Anyone who is halfway decent and plays frequently enough can do it, so in that sense it's not very competitive at all, because you don't really have to compete to get there.2 -
here is the real question , why do we even have a ranked play if there is no point to rank other then a one time achievement ? If at say the end of the month your standing determined a outcome then there would be reason for people to stay at a higher rank instead of de pipping to troll newer less skilled players . Aslo I agree they need to go back to the old rank system without safety so that ranking is harder and means something . I have been playing casual and the week before rank reset playing only 2 or 3 games a night for that week I was able to rank into mid single digits without even trying . I wasn't in a tryhard build or a swf group doing it either and most the games I died in and still pipped , hell most the games all I did was rescue survivors from the hooks and dodge the killer and I pipped , bp was suck , but I pipped .
In short , way to easy to rank up on either side , give them a reason to rank up and stay there . if you reward rank then do it by rank at the end not the amount of games or anything like that so it will give a reason to not de pip .

furthermore, the last few forum randos who claimed to be rank1 survivors saying the game isnt competitive at all, were proven to be fakes when we checked their profiles.
gg stop whining about dc bans0 -
If you want to know what casual mode would be like, just think of the first day after a rank reset... ALL THE TIME. Its not fun. They don't need a casual mode. They need a way to balance out the ranking system based on a number of different factors so that you end up in matches with similarly skilled players all around. I honestly don't know how you do that.
My thought is make it harder to rank up, and don't allow ranking down ever. The only time your rank goes down is at season reset. You get awarded for ranking up, and drop a few ranks at reset.
I don't know how this would effect smurf accounts, but are those seriously a problem? I don't know many people that will buy the game over and over again just to pick on lower ranks.

The only people that aren't rank 1 are beginners or people that are deranking. Lol. And to be honest next month I'll probably start to derank as well. Or try to find people to SWF with. Cause solo high rank is just not fun. Haven't had a game tonight where a single survivor has survived. Yet still sitting at rank 1.

I'm not really sure what the hell the OP keeps ranting about. Rank is an MMR. Eventually you should ideally reach a place where you're at 50/50 win loss and you stop ranking up. If you do rank up, then you didn't belong in the rank you were at. Plain and simple. This has nothing to do with casual etc. The entire game is casual. There's no reward for rank 1. It's just matching you with your ideal team/killer/survivors.

I sent you my profile. I opened up my achievements. No idea why. Been rank 1 on both sides for a very long time. Yeah I'm in a DBD competitive group that someone invited me to a long time ago. The problem is that anyone can get to rank 1. So you have people like me and 90% of the rank 1's that don't belong there and don't want to be there.
You know your game is pathetic when you are banning people for trying to enjoy your game. People that wish to play the game for fun and derank are getting banned. Never heard of anything like that in other game. More bans you give out, the more people that are going to realize that your games not fun. Just going to lose more and more players. Seems like a really stupid way to handle the situation.

@purebalance I"m sorry if my point wasn't very clear. You're right, it is an MMR and that's the whole issue. It doesn't matchmake accurately to skill level because it's too easy to rank up.
The idea about casual play was to do with the competitive attitudes of people at high ranks. Some people don't like to play in such a competitive environment, but ranking up is too easy so they can't avoid it with the current system. Therefore, either ranking needs to be more difficult so that only those who are skilled enough and want to play competitively can get to high ranks, or there needs to be a separate game mode for non-competitive play.
Hope that clears it up a bit@Dibs Thank you, after the last comment I did decide to do just that. There's no point arguing with someone who's already decided they're not going to listen to a word you say.
0 -
@GrannyonAcid That's exactly the issue, I'm glad someone gets what I'm trying to say lol. On the one hand, deranking does hurt the people you're playing with, and it's not fair to newer players to be put in matches with people way better and more experienced, which is why it's bannable. On the other hand, for people who just want to have fun in a non-competitive environment, deranking is the only solution that currently exists.
0 -
All they have to do is turn the current rank system into casual mode. Then make ranked a actual competitive game mode. Have the survivors be able to ban 1 thing each from the killer and the killer be able to ban 4 things from the survivors. That way all those super sweaty people can't complain and cry about perks and add-ons. It would be perfect.

It really isn't too easy. If it is too easy, you're not playing with the right people.
There is only one mode and it IS casual mode as you're describing. The only other thing I can tell you or "your friend" is that you just need to play SWF or KYF if you think this is competitive play.

@purebalance I guess it's just a matter of different perspectives. In my experience, the thing that makes it not casual is people's attitudes. In general, players at higher ranks are really salty and aggressive. My guess, which could be wrong, is that it's because they actually care about their ranks and so they get upset when others endanger that. I feel like being able to play in a situation where ranks aren't affected would go a long way towards creating the kind of "casual" environment I'm talking about.
(Also why the quotation marks? Do you think I'm lying and the friend is actually me, or something?)0 -

Well this is weird.
My vacation led to me doing a playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 3. It was a lot of fun 😋.
They will never separate the playerbase in DBD. If you want to derank as Survivor, suicide on hook early and don’t do gens.
My ban expires tomorrow, tbh I haven’t even noticed. I will miss one day of an event where I can buy all the skins!? Darn 🙁😂
Oh yeah. I played very little this month. DC’ed one day from R1 to R9. The very next day, I got right back to R1 again. What a disgusting and cowardly player I am 🤪. Took me a whole 8 hours to do. Tough game!1 -
@Lowbei If you want to talk about obeying forum rules, we could talk about how you're derailing this topic and literally making it about you.
Leaving that aside, I looked at your profile. I did notice one thing, and that's that you've been banned before. Feel free to correct me, but I'm guessing it was for being rude to other players, which you seem to do an awful lot with very little provocation.
You may be well-known, but so was Hitler. The fact that a lot of people agree with things you've said is neither impressive nor admirable. What is both impressive and admirable is being able to hold a conversation with someone that doesn't agree with you without mocking them or throwing thinly-veiled insults around. People will be more likely to take you seriously if you can make your argument without attacking anyone else, or saying they're "hilarious" in lieu of an actual argument.
In the meantime, does anyone know if there's a way to close my own topic? I feel like we're not actually talking about the original point anymore, and anything worth saying has already been said (on BOTH sides of the discussion, before anyone starts accusing me of trying to censor people that don't agree with me).

@Fibijean first, feel free to ignore lowbei. Occasionally he presents valid points, but he's mostly interested in trolling and baiting people into little flame wars. Not worth it.
As for casual mode, I think it would be very tough. There's no guarantee the players you view as salty would not find their way in there. Also, if deranking in the current ranking system is possible for people who want to play more casual, it is possible for everyone else.
To be honest, I can't wrap my head around "casual" play anyway. Would you want a killer to assist survivors? Would you want survivors offer them up for the hook? Games like this are great exactly because they're competitive. You try to take competitiveness out of it, you kill the game. Give your best and hardest, and take a deep breath, smile and say gg when it doesn't work out.
Btw, dbd DOES have casual mode, it's called KYF and Survive With Your Friends.2 -

"oh something new lets just do it" Not thinking about the repercussions to those who don't go at this game hardcore and just want to play for fun of it.
0 -
@George_Soros That's a good point. The main theory was that people would be less salty if they didn't have anything to lose. The idea behind casual play isn't the same as troll play (although that might be a side effect, come to think of it). The idea is that you still play to win, it's still competitive, but people don't mind losing as much because they're not actually losing anything, and therefore the environment would be less toxic overall, similar to how the environment is at low ranks currently - people are there either because they don't care about losing or because they're still new so they don't have high expectations of themselves or their teammates.
I would agree with what some people seem to be thinking which is that I'm living in a bit of a fantasy here and it's simply not realistic, except that I've experienced the difference in environment and attitudes between ranked and casual play in games like League. So either it would work for DbD as well, or there's something fundamentally different about LoL that makes it work there and not here. I can't quite put my finger on what it is, though.

On the long run though, it's still more a question of a player's personality. This topic always reminds me of me playing Settlers of Catan (a great board game) with family members. My brothers and me used to play ruthless, because we view "this is how the game should be played, and it's just a game anyway", while my sister and mother always played nice and cooperative, which we found boring or downright stupid
I would actually support making a casual gamemode and a ranked one, but that would divide the community. I'm quite happy at the moment with lobby waiting times being very short, even as killer, but I'm not sure DBD's playerbase would be enough for two sets of lobbies. I wonder if LoL has a bigger number of players (never played it).
0 -
@George_Soros I had this exact discussion with some family recently regarding games like Settlers. We came to the conclusion that games can be fun if you're playing competitively or cooperatively, but it's only fun if everyone is playing with the same goal in mind. So if everyone is playing to win then it's fun, or if no one is really taking winning seriously it's also fun, but everyone needs to have the same goal in mind otherwise it's not fun for anyone.
That's a really valid point about the community. It's quite possible that DbD doesn't have a big enough player base to support two gamemodes if it were divided between them. LoL's player base is huge, which is probably part of why it works for them. (They were recently overtaken by Fortnite as the biggest free online game in the world by player base, but before that LoL held the title for a good 5-10 years). I would be interested to find out how they handled it back when their player base was much smaller.0 -
lol is this thread still going?
i wish these people would dc from our forums like they do ingame0 -
I cant see this ever happening for a two reasons.
DBD is a game built on grind, something to work for, you also have to earn bloodpoints for addons, a casual mode what would it entail? every perk but no addons?
It would separate the playerbase when some are already finding it harder to find games especially in smaller or quieter regions, while rank can be annoying it is there to separate the players and pair them up with equal skill, I am not saying it works but its idea is sound.
DCing to derank will more than likely not ever get you a ban, a few streamers still do this but they themselves tend to play out the game until the end and DC once they can either escape or die on when hooked, they still play there role for the whole match.

@twistedmonkey In theory, it would entail exactly the same things as ranked, except that your rank wouldn't be affected, so you'd have nothing to lose except items. The playerbase thing is a totally valid point, and not one that can be circumvented too easily I agree that the idea behind ranks is sound, but if we're going to keep the one gamemode there need to be some adjustments so that you can't get to rank 1 "by accident" just by being a halfway decent player.
The deliberate deranking thing only gets you a ban if you do it enough. The ban is based on your ratio of games played to games dc'ed. So it is possible to do it without getting banned, but there's still a problem regarding the reason it's bannable in the first place - namely, it's not fair to the people you're playing with, and it's not fair to people at lower ranks to be matched against someone of a much higher skill level.

You can derank without DCing too
There is no excuse to dc unless you are being hold hostage basically.
And pls don't pretend that this happens so frequently1 -
@DeadByFlashlight I don't think I made my stance on DCing clear. I think it's despicable and as you said there's no excuse unless the game is being held hostage. The only other way to derank is to play badly on purpose, which is bad for all the same reasons that DCing is bad, albeit to a slightly lesser extent. But I think it's a problem that there are people that feel like they have to DC just to play in an environment they find fun.

I let survivors farm some point instead of ruining their game
