I get that people want an LGBT character, but...
Why?
Let me preface by saying I'm not LGBT-phobic or spreading hate speech or anything, I'm just stating my opinion.
If a character is made ONLY to be LGBT and that's their WHOLE personality, then it wouldn't be a good addition, neither would cheesily integrating it into a character's current lore.
WHY does it matter if there's an LGBT character? Why do we need one? What's the point? "oH hEY gUys, wE aDdeD An LGBT cHaRIcTer." I don't care who my character is, I just want the gameplay to be good.
There just isn't a reason.
Thank you for coming to my very short TED talk.
Edit: there is a follow up on the 5th page of comments. Please look there as well.

It doesn't matter, it's essentially begging to be pandered to. I've always thought that things like orientation don't contribute anything truly meaningful to a character's development, especially if that's their whole 'selling point'. "Look, a gay character! We added them!" Sounds more like a circus act announcing its unusual freak show star than a genuine attempt at crafting something interesting and new. The best part is that the people that would rather not be viewed this way are typically silent on the issue, and those who advocate for them are often part of a very persistent, vocal minority that look to virtue signal.

Here's my thing about it. You can say your x y z but unless you're actually doing it, it's all lip service.
Like as a straight man, I can appreciate a body builder. They look great. They do a good job. I can say man that dude is hot. Doesn't mean anything. I can say it's my identity, but it's not. A person is more than their sexuality.
You can partake in gay acts. You can let people know that hey. I do those things, but you are not defined by it. If you're trans then you probably want to be treated like the gender you're transitioning to. You'd take on that genders characteristics and there wouldn't be a second guess. You can't say I'm transitioning to a straight man and date men. A straight man wouldn't date a straight man. You know?
Now translate that to the game. A lot of men get penetrated (on hooks) in this game. You're probably not going to treat the survivor any different due to their sexuality because stereotypes. They're just going to be a normal survivor. Unless you put a paragraph in the lore or something.
I don't get it.

I just don't see the point of it in this game, on last post i got some hate because i told my opinion. I don't have anything against it but why? Will it help you to survive? How many more personalities would need to add after? It doesn't even have anything to do with lore.
16 -
It's because people are way too PC these days and self absorbed to the point that they find ridiculous things to get offended over , they probably only want it so samination can give it a voice and a parody more than they actually want it in the game , watch and see when they implement it people will cry it's not a good representation or they don't like how they look
13 -
I was waiting for somebody to take offense, but y'all have some common sense.
I'm not opposed to it, but I just don't see the point.
8 -
Second post regarding LGBT of today so i'll just copy my comment.
While i'm part of the movement, i can't understand the mania of some people to be acknowledge on everything, every single character can be part of the movement, it doesn't get more importance because it's written on their bio.
This is one of the reasons why society is the way it is, because instead of normalizing something that is indeed normal, movements try to force everything into.
So when it happens i hope it does because of time and not because of post like this, peace <3

I've lost friends with great potential that got lost in these sorts of politics.
It hurts, but reducing oneself to a label when you can be greater isn't something I can accept for those I care about. I only hope that one day they will see I was right.
7 -
I think I grew up in the last generation where there was still a small pocket of people that could develop and apply common sense (90's). Not to say that everyone belonging to younger gens are the opposite, but it's far more common since social media/educational institutions have turned into propaganda machines that spew heavily left leaning rhetoric and ideas with no one to balance or check them with sensible alternatives.

Everything doesn’t have to be labeled. We are not naked cans of mystery contents.

All these people posting about something they don't care about, must be something in the water.

I think it has mainly to do with representation in games and media. I think people want LGBT characters in the game to have someone to relate to and love. This is just my guess. In order to fully answer this question I feel its best to answer why people want representation in any game or media at all. And I feel it this is because of 2 reasons. 1 in the past the media has not show a vast diversity of different people and 2 the little representation they did have it was not in a positive light. So people want representation in order to make for the past. This is my interpretation.
Personally I don't see why not put it. It will make people happy to see someone like them and the people who don't care won't really be offended, if there is not any negative impact to adding then I guess its fine.
8 -
And here, I always thought Nea was meant to be a lesbian and thus an LGBT character and now I am really confused....
Bubba got a slick LGBT treatment recently, or is that offensive now, I can't even tell anymore....
3 -
It's frankly annoying how big of a deal people are making this out to be.
Or I'm in a bad mood. Not mutually exclusive 😂.
0 -
For the love of ######### God pls stop saying "thanks for listening to my Ted talk". It's so annoying.
But referring to what you said in your thread. It's fine if the dev's add an lgbt character if it's included in a good way, but knowing bhvr, they're probably gonna do a bad job and just pander to us.
13 -
There really isn't much point to having a LGBT Character in DBD. It's not the type of game where you say, "I relate to X character because I'm XYZ and they're XYZ."
I feel like it's very superficial to relate to a character purely because they're LGBT. The character's personality never really shows in the game, and sure I get the whole wanting to be included and acknowledged thing but it just seems a little pointless to have it in a game where you don't really get a glimpse of the character's personality or lifestyle.
2 -
Should they have an LGBT character or not, it’s always going to create a talking point.
Let me just say this
cosmetically speaking a LGBT character would be awesome, my gay friends absolutely dominate the fashion scene. If you have ever been to a LGBT parade you know cosmetically anything is possible.
8 -
That’s just what I was going to say. There is nothing hetero about Nea, and she dresses a lot like lesbians that I’ve met.
3 -
itd be nice to have a character be a drag queen, or some of the sorts. IMAGINE THE COSMETIC POTENTIAL FOR A DRAG QUEEN SURVIVOR?
5 -
I think it is because representation in important. The same reason the game has Black, Asian and Latin characters.
14 -
"I'm not homophobic!"
"Regular Person or a Gay Person."
Second statement seems to imply otherwise.
24 -
I had always thought and liked the idea that anyone could be any sexuality you envisioned.
However, since they've stated certain characters orientations as being straight its only fair that they include orientations also. Representation matters. If these relationships were shown more and normalised we wouldn't need to be having so many conversations about it.
Nobody had any issues with adding LatinX, Asian, black characters. Why is a gay character so problematic to some?
7 -
No one wants a character who's entire persona is defined by "they gay", no real person is like that.
People like having characters they can relate to, and it's not like a gay person can't relate to straight characters, but they can't relate to any in that particular aspect, whereas straight people can. Sexual identity is still part of identity.
There's plenty of characters who're confirmed straight, and that's not a big deal, a character being confirmed gay shouldn't be a big deal either, they should just be yet another unique character. There's no reason one shouldn't be added, so why not add one?
14 -
If they were to add a LGBTQ character to dbd. I can guarantee you there will be people who get upset when that character gets killed. If they didn't want bad things to happen to this person maybe they shouldn't have wanted them added to a horror game?
5 -
I honestly feel like confirming that a character identifies in "x" way goes completely against what the devs have said about wanting to make characters that people can relate to, obviously if it's a licensed figure then that's a different story, but defining that a character is straight or gay then makes them less relatable to a lot of people, the ambiguity of not knowing what a character defines themselves as or what their sexuality is lets people use their imagination, most players aren't going to see a survivor and choose them because in the lore they're "x", they'll choose them because they like the way they look, or the cosmetics they wear. I'm all for a character that has "girl" clothing on a guy or vice versa but confirming their sexuality accomplishes nothing, it just makes it harder for people to relate to the character. I think representation is very important, but the media needs to wake up and realize that rubbing it in peoples faces is what creates the hate for the community in the first place.
1 -
I agree 100%. This stuff doesn't belong to DbD.
1 -
Do you think they should rewrite lore where they mention straight relationships? So they're consistent? Or do you want them to just remove the gay?
17 -
representation is important, why is it such a problem that there would be a confirmed LGBT character in the roster? there’s already confirmed straight characters (like david, felix, nurse)
even if you dont agree with it, or think it “doesnt belong in dbd”, it matters to a lot of people- so why not just be happy for them?
9 -
Adding someone LGBT+ doesn't mean they were only created with being LGBT+ in mind. The process doesn't have to be any different than adding a straight character. It's a line in their lore, the lore is the exact same thing whenever or not it says boyfriend/husband or girlfriend/wife.
If a character is revealed to be LGBT from the start they are ,,only making them to be LGBT'' or if they're revealed later on they are ,,changing the lore to pander''.
8 -
Yeah, but what about characters like legion (frank and susie),nurse or felix?
Those were more or less confirmed to be in a straight relationship in their lore, but nobody complained about it being "rubbed in their face".
So at that point why shouldn't we have some LGBT characters in the game so people could relate to them? Most people don't read the lore so they wouldn't be affected anyway.
11 -
I would say more than 50% of the players are against LGTB stuff in the game
3 -
There were also people that thought leatherface having a black mask is racist.
Some people will always be extra drama.
But that shouldn't be a reason against adding a LGBT character.
9 -
When it comes to games with some level of customization, some people like being able to create or otherwise be able to use characters that they can identify with in some way, or that reflect some aspects that they enjoy, visual or otherwise.
An LGBT+ character would simply have this one aspect that some people may identify with.
Now, it was said specifically in the QaA that they don't want to make a character whose only trait is "Is LGBT+", which I think is the right way to approach these kinds of things. Unlike say Overwatch, where they just say "oh Soldier 73 is gay now" and that can be found absolutely nowhere in game...
Even though I'm not to bothered by the lack of this one specific thing, I do sympathise with people who would like to have specific character traits available to them in videogames with character customization or a large roster of characters.
I am a mega fan of good character customization in games, and have in the past dropped or loved games based on being able to make a character to my liking. A lot of the time, the characters I would like to be able to make are just not possible options in most character creators, so I fully understand people wanting certain options they like or can identify with to be available. I can tell you right now if we had a male survivor that looks very feminine and uses the female survivor shape, I would instantly become a survivor main lol
Also, BHVR did say that representation is important to them. So it's a good thing to hold them to their word, because they shouldn't get to benefit from the good will of people who do find this aspect important without following through on their promise. Just like they shouldn't get the goodwill of people who buy their product only to find that the new Ormond makes fps dip to 35... they should be held to their word on whatever promises they make.
Edit: Misspelled sympathise

What, did you ask them all individually or something? Don't pull statistics out of your ass.

jesus christ, just lock these threads up already.
Not because it should not be discussed, but because it never leads to any sort of constructive discussion. Its the same ######### every time, the same arguments and comments on loop.
- I dont want the globohomo agenda in my game
- I dont care and people should not care (but if they add it into the game then I will care)
- Its just pandering to lgbt people for money and stuff
- People will get offended if they see gay people on hooks
- "but what about Russia and the Arab world?"
- I want to be represented
- I want the devs to add gay people so the bigots in the community will show up and we can ban them
- I want gay characters because diversity and stuff
- I want trans, drag queens, demisexuals, asexuals, pansexuals, queers...
God I ######### hate these threads so much.
13 -
Why not?
If it makes people connect more to a character then why be opposed to that?
7 -
It's simple: Representation. If that reason doesn't suffice, then it is probably not for you to understand.
Dead by Daylight has stood out amongst many games due to the roster of characters who come from different cultures and backgrounds while being fleshed out through their struggles, behaviors, experiences, etc. in their lore . Queer culture is no different and has a place in the world of video games, so I don't see why it wouldn't in a game where it is obvious you are able play as characters that you could relate to.
For me personally, being someone who is into cosmetics in video games and someone who is into fashion IRL. I am super excited for what the devs can come up and how creative they can get depending on what 'themes' they introduce cosmetic-wise.
5 -
I love how @Orion put this: pandering is only an issue when it's to LGBT+ people. Pandering it horror fans by adding in liscened icons? Fine. Pandering to Silent Hill fans in particular with that entire chapter (which tbh was very good)? Fine. Pandering to the Poc community by giving them Zarina, Claudette, Elodie, etc? Fine.
Panding to the LGBT+ community by giving them some representation? Bad, bad, bhvr bad, never again, world is ending.
Also, "I'm not anti-lgbt" and then "Normal person/gay person" contradict each other. What's wrong with being gay, buddy?
12 -
I guess we have to look up all the other threads about DS,Noed,Spirit etc. too because they are barely ever constructive 👀
1 -
I mean there isn't much sexuality in the game in general so I don't overly care myself. It's kinda like how the dev said, not much room for that kinda thing really in the entity's unending trial realm.
I am not opposed to it either, I mean I never really cared about any of the story in this game, so I mean they can do whatever it won't affect me any.
1 -
Makes no difference whatsoever for me if the character is LGBT or not. Can't understand why make a fuss about it either way. If they want to do virtue signaling or not I couldn't care less. I only care if the perks of one character are good or not and if it is well done design wise, memorable, interesting and different from the others in some recognizable way (and good outfits).
I don't get it why people get goose bumbs for either side, it's just a complete waste of time. What should matter in my humble opinion is what I mentioned above, specially for this kind of game that has very little interaction with history and knowing the characters, despite the lore. This is not an RPG.

I checked the previous post by @Orion and there were clearly more "Vote Up" against than pro
1 -
The tiktok side of this community WANTS there to be a character whose only personality is being LGBT so they don't really care
0 -
I have literally seen no person that was asking for a character whose only personality trait is being LGBT..
8 -
Why is this such a big deal? If bhvr add an lgbt character everyone would be satisfied. Gay people would have their representation in game and homophobes would be happy to tunnel or sandbag them in game. It's a win-win scenario.
People who truly doesn't care should not mind it either. For me it's just another character to play as/against. I actually was surprised that trere is so much people against lgbt. I've heard it's ok in your developed countries.
7 -
To the OP:
Why not?
we already have several characters with mentioned heterosexual relationships despite the devs stating in the beginning they don’t want to confirm anything. They have contradicted themselves and revised their statement. Rewriting the lore for those characters is not an option. Also they are writing more and more lore for every character.
why should everything LGBTQ+ be excluded? It’s not only about sexuality, it’s about individuality, relationships, friendships, struggles in life (like a coming out) etc. It would be very unnatural if none of the chars were LGBTQ+. It would be okay to exclude everything in this direction but that’s not possible anymore. So there is either direct exclusion or inclusion.
4 -
Firstly, its important to note that while this seems like a reasonable argument, trying to say 'we shouldn't have bad representation' what it actually does is create an artificially inflated standard on LGBTQ+ characters.
Specifically, a LGBTQ+ character should be able to fill every role a straight, cis character does, and implying that you need to meet certain qualifications to be a 'good' LGBTQ+ character itself is part of the problem: Your trying to force people to justify the existence of queer characters. So lets drop pretense.
You wouldn't bat an eye if a male character mentioned that they had a wife in a story. But if that same male character said they had a husband, you would apply different expectations to the inclusion of that character in attempt to declare that they are 'pandering' or 'forced in' or whatever. Even if they are exclusively there to be a male straight character in a relationship. Like "The Hillbilly's Mom and Dad" are explicit characters in DBD, who SOLELY exist to be a heterosexual couple who abused their child, but no one is saying they are arbitrarily forcing romance into the game. Likewise, Nea isn't Sweedish just to force 'a token Sweed,' despite the fact that Nea being Sweedish has NO impact on the game and is something you would never learn through pure gameplay because it exists entirely in the backstory, its because it would be weird if The Entity was capturing killers from all over the world and across time from all walks of life but mysteriously was only nabbing white American survivors.
In essence, your assuming straight and cis is 'default' or 'regular' or 'normal' (In fact, you pretty much said the quiet part out loud there) which is the entire problem: Because you view straight and cis as 'default' any deviation needs to be justified, that queer people are only allowed to exist 'for a reason' because otherwise you made someone 'not normal' for 'no reason.' When that reason can be as simple as 'queer people exist.'
Gay characters can be as one dimensional as straight characters, they can be as dynamic as straight characters. Their relationship can be all their character is about, just like many straight characters in stories, or it could just be one facet of who they are. All of those should be good and shouldn't result in any increased burden on the creators to justify it. Sometimes people are just gay, or bi, or trans, or nonbinary. Stories can be about the unique issues we face, because in many aspects of our lives our identities can be extremely important to our experiences, or those can be incidental because in many aspects of our lives that identity is incidental. So it isn't even that 'the character doesn't have to JUST be about their sexuality as a flat character' but 'Gay people should be able to be any type of character. Not every character in a story is a dimensional character, in fact most characters in a well written story are flat and non-dynamic, why can't some be gay?' And why can't some dynamic leads be incidentally gay in stories not about being gay?
As to why people specifically want an EXPLICITLY LGBTQ+ character?
Because 'assuming anyone could be gay' isn't equal representation. It is, again, a pretend way to say 'we already have it' when we clearly don't, because characters are confirmed straight all the time. Again, you just internalized it as 'default' so much you can't see how stuff like 'The nurse had a husband' is confirming her to be straight (or at least presents straight, I mean she is from somewhere around WW1/WW2, one could argue she had to marry a man to survive, but its implied her marriage was happy), meaning that its acceptable to reveal the sexuality of characters...
...As long as they are straight.
And yes, these reveals are advancing the story of these characters because your love life informs a lot about you, so they aren't JUST revealing that they are straight, but there is little reason you couldn't do the same for LGBTQ+ characters. It isn't that Nurse should be a Lesbian from the 1920s (It would be hard to make that not the case without seriously altering her background, and it would play into some truly horrific tropes to have the first gay character be a killer driven to madness by the tragedy of being gay), It isn't just that the new survivor had a boyfriend or whatever, maybe their boyfriend got kidnapped by the entity too. Or maybe they got lost on a mountain and they were part of a rescue party and got nabbed. Or any number of potential stories that include people who aren't straight.
If its a worry the character will be one dimensional, they could always make an existing character gay just as part of one of the background bits. Would Meg suddenly become a 'token character' if it was revealed she was into girls, despite all this interesting stuff we know about her like how she is both absurdly driven but at the same time gave up what she was driven about to take care of someone she cared about? Obviously not. So why worry a new character who is gay would 'just' be gay? That is a silly thing to assume and is pretty clearly trying to reduce a reasonable request to a ridiculous one by pretending that what people asked for ("a character who is LGBTQ+") is actually something different and unreasonable ("I want a character who's entire identity is their gay identity").
Also, to be clear, some people do live their life very openly queer and make it visible and a huge part of their identity. And most of those people are ######### awesome people because they chose to do that to make other people safer and to normalize being queer or not conforming to gender expectations that hurt real world people, as well as to create non-traditionally masculine/feminine role models for people who might not have them, or to visibly show them that queer people exist and they aren't alone and that being out is a thing you CAN be. The IRL queer equivalent of being willing to loop the killer to protect green rank baby queers trying to figure themselves out. So if your implying someone with dyed hair and a rainbow pin or whatever is 'making being gay their entire personality' you missed the point. Some LGBTQ+ people wanna be unassuming gen jockeys because it empowers their community, others wanna be loud and proud because it protects their community. Both are freaking rad and no human being has to earn your respect for who they are if who they are has absolutely no bearing on you.
TL;DR: Because straight characters are confirmed all the time and are never questioned for being straight regardless of how 3 dimensional or dynamic a character they are. Any type of character should be possible to confirm for being gay. It isn't just 'oh we don't say explicitly so it could be anyone' because its said explicitly a LOT about straightness.
14 -
I wish I could Vote Up twice.
6 -
If you're indifferent about the addition of LGBTQ characters then what's the problem. The fact remains that people out there do actually care and this is for those people. It's not that hard to understand...
Hell the devs even said they're not going to make characters solely based on their sexuality soo... Yeah what's the big deal?
7 -
Representation is something people love to see, no matter if it is gender, race, sexuality, and etc. What if a disabled person wanted to see a character with a prosthetic? Great, that'd be cool for those who want to see a form of themselves in the game. I cannot for the life of me find the link to the video, but a streamer found herself beyond happy to see a person who looked like Elodie in the game. She felt real representation for herself, with Elodie not only being the second black female character to be in the game, the only other of course being Claudette from launch. So why shouldn't people want to be happy for something in themselves to be shown? LGBT people are still being discriminated against, and a lot of the coverage they get in the media, whether it be news or in television shows for instance. If not discriminated, they can get bad or poor representation. An LGBT character to play as could be something for people to see themselves in. Whether it is a gay man, lesbian woman, bisexual person, or trans person, I would welcome them with open arms!
For the people who truly don't care, why speak on it then? It obviously doesn't bother you, or so you say. A lot of people barely even read the lore anyways from those I have spoken to in my gaming group, so I wouldn't be shocked if they ever chose to change a character's lore and seeing it go right under everyone's nose! Regardless, why should a character's sexuality effect someone so much? Nurse, Felix, Julie, and Frank all off of the top of my head have heterosexual established relationships. Does it bother you that their sexuality is spoken of? No, correct? So why should an LGBT character be such an uproar? What will it do to really change the game for you? It is no big deal, and would be welcomed by many in the community, myself included.
TL;DR: An LGBT character would be fine in the game and be welcomed by most. The people opposing it are worried about elements that wouldn't effect your match on either survivor or killer side from a gameplay standpoint.

You also said dbd is controlled by the illuminati
