Disconnection Penalty is unhealthy. Please read this with an open mind.
Before leaving a negative comment and dismissing my opinion, please understand that this is an opinion A lot of people share, and that your opinion itself maybe flawed Without You realizing it. Too many people on the internet are close-minded and won't listen to the other side.
Dead by daylight is a very unique game, some people still have no idea what winning actually is according to the game, some people have entirely different values on things in game not even the developers give a proper definition of what is counted as a win. This game can't just be treated like other games and apply the same systems to fix its own issues. MMR will just make the game a more frustrating sweatfest when survivors go against Freddy and spirit every game being punished for being good, or suffer in solo queue because the friends they usually play with are offline. Or killers will have to play ridiculous standards every game and have losses that are out of their control because they want to play their main at a higher level than the killers power will let them Reach combine that with the disconnection penalty which is what I'm here to talk about. And you will soon have more frustration, leading to more players quitting the game and longer queue times. There is already a lack of high rank Killers leading to low rank Killers getting matched against ridiculous Survivor teams far beyond their skill level. Why am I getting Killers who have a single yellow perk? Why am I getting survivors who all have the same builds and bring offerings that don't even appear in the bloodweb anymore?
The frustrations of this game are really unique, since the game itself is so unique. Not to mention and it's currently buggiest State I have ever seen since the beta, frustrating killer power and Survivor perk designs. A ridiculous grind, increase focus on monetization and the return of hackers the developers won't/can't anything about.
Now as I have said, dead by daylight is very unique, people who will quit from a match will find a way to do it no matter what. Whether it is giving up on hook, intentionally getting hooked, or just quitting the game. They're not going to sit and look at the quit timer and think about what they did, they are probably going to go play another game, and when the quit penalty gets too long, they'll never return. I'm tired of people labeling people who quit four matches as nothing but selfish crybabies. Plenty of the game's best players and live streamers think the quit penalty is unhealthy. Lots of people notice an abundance of survivors and Killers playing as toxic as they possibly can to try and encourage quitting or force you to quit. Knowing that they can get away with it. Hackers can put the quit penalty onto whoever they want, including one who currently gives you a 72-hour ban if you don't ready up fast enough that poppers has mentioned multiple times. There is an abundance of bugs, why should a killer get a quit penalty if they spawn in and can't move? Some people don't have time to just waste 15 minutes while the survivors mess around in front of them, especially with how grindy the rift is. Some people don't have time to just wait it out and encountering bugs like that constantly will kill motivation to return to the game, let alone spend money on it. Poor map design is one of the biggest problems with the game, it can be exhausting getting badham preschool 10 times in a row as killer or getting Hawkins every game as Survivor. If people really don't want to play those Maps, they will find a way to not participate in the game play and all the quit penalty does is punish the remaining players.
I'm sorry but when it's a Huntress with iridescent hatchets and somebody instantly quits, to go play another game. The other three survivors are still forced to stay in that 3 V1 under a threat of being penalized for a ridiculous amount of time. It's a video game, quit taking it so seriously, and quit labeling people who quit as selfish losers because you are valuing your fun more than theirs. I can't tell you how many times I've still had a teammate rage quit and instead of being able to leave and find another match as well, I am forced into a lopsided match on a map I probably hate with no chance at possibly escaping while my teammates hide and do nothing. Or I could be playing killer and get Haddonfield for the third time in a row, somebody instantly rage quits and somebody kills themself on hook. Now I have to spend 25 minutes trying to find one of the two claudette's waiting for the other one to die so they can take the hatch. Or I can drop what I'm doing and Farm because I feel bad for those two forced to stay in this match.
Fix the bugs, fix the frustrations, fix the reasons people have legitimate Reasons to Quit, and then penalize those who quit for childish reasons. There will always be people who give up on hook or quit the match because they go down first. Or they hate the map. There is no getting around it. There is no level of penalty that will stop them from leaving the match. All the current penalty does is punish the other three survivors and the Killer.
The quit penalty amplifies frustrations with the game. Today alone, I had a match against a ghostface we should have all survived. But there was a bill running a selfish prick like left behind and conveniently he didn't have borrowed time. He had the selfish I must escape mindset, wasted every palate and open the gate to rob me of my daily, only to sit in the exit gate area and Crouch repeatedly while the entire team was slugged and I was on hook because I went down for him. He even distracted the killer so I wouldn't be able to use any of my perks to heal or decisive. To me that is far more frustrating than somebody quitting at the beginning of the match because it's Freddy on Meat plant.
Getting three Deathslingers in a row who leave me slugged at 5 generators because they refuse to hook survivors out of fear the survivors will kill themselves on hook shows that fundamentally terrible character design and gameplay design. Forced to play midwich twice when I am playing Huntress kills my mood and any desire to continue playing killer that night, leading to survivors having to wait longer for matches.
You cannot force people to stay in a game. Feeling like you are a prisoner once you have been locked into a match only makes the game more frustrating. Not to mention the ridiculous cool down on the penalty. I have disconnected three times this week, once I was frozen in place as the twins my very first game playing them, I couldn't move and the survivors refused to open the gates. They trash talked me after the match. The second time I quit was a rage quit, I will admit I got genuinely tilted and just closed the game. The third disconnection was earlier today. And is what inspired this post. A farming killer who refused to hook me, instead leaving me slugged and then repeatedly Downing me so the other survivors could pallet save for the achievement. I didn't want somebody to get an undeserved achievement and be held hostage in a match with a farming killer and teammates who refused to do generators while he only focused on me. So I quit while on his shoulder and got a 60 minute ban. I haven't even quit in the last 48 hours. The cool down on this quit penalty is atrocious. Arguably the worst I have ever seen. And the raising in time is insane as well. Maybe it was a mistake to bring mine up so drastically? It wouldn't surprise me with how bugged the game currently is but if there is a quit penalty, at least reduce the times and reset them daily.
To anyone reading this, please don't act like you never get frustrated playing this game, we are only human. You calling somebody a sociopath for leaving the game is nothing compared to forcing them to play you are match because you value your fun more than theirs. I can't tell you how many times I have been forced to stay in a 3v 1 or lost all desire to play killer because of constant bad Maps I am forced to play. I'm fine with losing to skill, but getting defeated by bad Map design repeatedly and trash talked for it is exhausting.
I also want to Define boring. A lot of people in the forums, typically Killers who refused to play Survivor under any circumstance and tend to play more annoying Killers like deathslinger or doctor will often tell you that "boring means anything to survivors don't like, or that the Survivor is probably bad and doesn't know how to play the game." Which simply isn't true. I play both sides, but lean killer, although I've been having a lot less fun with killer lately because of all of the glitches and repetitive Survivor builds and poor map design. It is just as Fair to complain about getting badham preschool five times in a row as killer, as it is to call deathslinger boring.
Certain killers are by no means overpowered, deathslinger is mid-tier because he is bad at 4v4 but incredibly boring due to his ability to shut down chases. Chases are the only real chance a Survivor has at having fun and demonstrating their skill, nobody likes hiding and sitting on generators if they've played the game for a certain amount of time. He robs the survivors of their chance to show Chase skills by ending chases immediately through uninteractive game play. People will often tell you to just Juke him or duck behind walls and stuff, but if that's the case, it means his shots are unreactable Scott jund has proven. Not to mention if you are constantly juking and ducking behind cover, he will just close the distance, zoning you for free and hit you anyway. Leading to a lose-lose 50/50 scenario.
Doctor on the other hand just has overturned add-ons and annoying Chase music, He tends to be a killer for newer players and not the greatest at high ranks. He is annoying but not at all "OP" and personally my least favorite killer to go against, due to his music and flashy visuals actually giving me headaches.
Another example are legion and clown. The two worst killers in the game, hopefully clown gets a proper rework very soon and Legion gets the same treatment since neither of them are particularly fun to play as or against. Despite them being so bad. Clown just has a repetitive gameplay Loop and no map pressure. While Legion lacks the ability to down anybody and constantly forcing survivors to mend will not be fun for either side no matter how many Buffs or Nerfs.
Ghostface is a killer I often see complaints about as well, mostly because of how buggy he is and overplayed he is. Popularity isn't a fair way to criticize a killer, although he tends to attract a certain demographic of killer player which leads to encountering him constantly and a repetitive gameplay Loop. Just fix the glitches and he will be fine honestly. People will always complain about a killer if they see them too much and that's just unfortunate, although it shows that the other Killers might not be viable.
Hopefully I have shown that by picking some of the most hated killers and saying why they will be boring or are often called boring, ends The Stereotype of idiots on the forums trying to merge boring with overpowered.
Not to mention there are many content creators and people who play the game far more than even I do that agree with this opinion, and I would argue no a lot more then most of the people on the forums who demand changes without understanding all of the things that change will bring. Scott Jund, Ussylis, Zubat, Puppers, Monto, Farmer John, and the list goes on. They all seem to agree. And the chances are you respect at least one of those names person reading this. Dead by daylight is a unique game. Quit penalty and MMR will be the death of it. It's a casual game, quit taking it so seriously and treating it so competitively.
Thank you for reading this jumbled mess of words, funnily enough the first time I was typing it out the website bugged out and completely wiped everything. I lost so much I was going to say and ended up typing so much more. Hopefully whoever reads this gets something from it, or at least hears me out. Please people be civil, and please just listen to the other side of things instead of always assuming you are correct and any other opinion is wrong. Fix the game, then punish the rage quits. But right now the quit penalty/bugs/frustration/balance just kills the population, even with cross-play it's taking 20 minutes for a match. I don't want to go through that wait just to go against a deathslinger on midwich or get the underground lab when I am hillbilly or Huntress.
Thank you again for reading this, I'm sorry this turned out way longer than I thought it would but I just had to get so many opinions out here and losing my first attempt at this led to even more frustration. I hope you have a good day or night and I'm eager for any thoughts and discussions that come from this. Along with hopeful change

They are a necessary evil, if you didn't have them, then people would DC like there's no tomorrow, even more than they already do.

TLDR.
But seriously, its a multiplayer game. When you queue up, you signed up to play a game of Dead by Daylight. It doesn't matter if your team is bad, it doesn't matter if you don't like the killer. It doesn't matter if they camp or tunnel you. If you don't like those things, don't queue up. If you don't like the team you get, play with your friends. Every other online multiplayer game actually has FAR harsher punishments for leavers. In fact, many of them will suspend you for several DAYS to WEEKS if you are a habitual leaver. Personally i think we should do that here too. if someone leaves the game, it literally ruins the game for the other 4 people in the match.

Thanks for the interesting read 😊

If you decide you're going to play Dead by Daylight, then PLAY DEAD BY DAYLIGHT. If you queue up for a match, I expect you to at the very least be respectful of the other four people who have decided to commit that 15 minutes or whatever it is, because I definitely always will. The astronomical number of variables present in the game's build and map options mean that you will sometimes be up against something you don't particularly like. This is true of everyone who plays. If you can't stomach that, this game might not be a good fit for you.
That's not a judgment; it doesn't say anything about you as a person, and I am not belittling you for enjoying something or not enjoying something. This is a video game, and you should be having fun with it. If you aren't, it's better just for your own personal enjoyment to find something that makes you happier. Sometimes, I get fed up with this game, and I take a break from it. I go play other games for a couple months, and sooner or later I go "Why don't I peek into DBD and see what's up?" But if the game was making me so miserable that I could not even bear to stay in a match, over and over again, I think I would just give it up.
Not everything is for everyone, and this game with all its problems definitely isn't for everyone.

Look, I get it, going against BS is unfun, but the DC penalty is a necessary evil. Most multiplayer games I can name have a Disconnection penalty, because it's a incredibly selfish thing to do.
I'll put it into terms of something like Overwatch. A very different game, yes, but with Overwatch people can join if another player quits, and the player that quits still gets a penalty.
You can't join a progressing game in DbD. There is nobody to take your place, and rightly so. Once you are gone, you are gone, leaving your team a 3v1. Yes, people get frustrated, but because you get irritated at a videogame doesn't mean we should disable something that is healthy for the game.
If penalties were disabled, people would DC because: They don't like a specific killer, they got hit earlier than they would've liked, maybe they don't like the map, they're trying to de-pip, they just wanna be #########.
They are necessary.

Dude. You are not the one who have hard time playing against sertain killers. But guess what. If you leave, your team will lose. And you are the whole reason your team lose. And how do you think they feel when they lose not because they played bad, but because they don't have enough hands to make gens in time and escape. You talking about frustrations, but bring frustration to your team like it's not a big deal. That's pretty hypocrite, you know.
I advice you to learn how to play against this killers. If you leave early you never learn and you never get fun time playing against them. Die trying and lose is more satisfying than lose without trying. Am I wrong?
If you don't want to play, you better not play and not ruin games. I tired to report people like you for intended losing and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Just. Take. The. L.
Really we wouldn't need a disconnect penalty if people could lose with some dignity.
Ragequitting happens in a lot of games and in DBD it's not different, only players can make more excuses.
Let's face it the amount of people legit quitting because they were stuck or their house caught fire is not even a drop in the bucket of people that just do it because they don't want to see themselves lose.
Sorry not sorry. Just play the game and stop acting like you deserve something at the expense of everyone else. When you quit early you ruin the game for everyone.

Agreed. Let me DC freely against Freddy again, he's insufferable.

There are many legit reasons to dc, like bugs, hackers, farmers, game breaking glitches etc, people who rage quit, still rage quit, the only people that get punished are those who play the game regualrly and deal with these terrible things.
If the game functioned properly and was balanced i'd be happy to welcome back the penalty, but right now it just kills the game. Smh people trust the devs who have their current rep with a functional penalty and mmr, fools.
2 -
Oh yeah because getting stuck from the start of the match and held hostage, or going against a hacker makes me a sore loser who can't handle losses. Grow up, i bet you play toxic af and enjoy ruining fun. Quitters still quit, they just go play other games now, the only ones punished are those who get actual issues. Like stuck in place while survivors refuse to open gates for 15+ minutes to tbag/bilnd you

Thank you for being respectful, most people on forums are entitled survivors or killers who want the dc ban to get away with scummy behavior. DC ban will kill dbd.

let's all flip the digital table
let's all take the digital ball home

"have an open mind"
Proceeds to not have an open mind and insults randomly when people disagree
It's a multiplayer game. Every time you enter a match you should play it through. People leaving because of bugs etc is way more rare than people make it out to be, unless it's a very buggy patch. But even so if you're disconnecting enough to get 2+ hour wait times it not only because of bugs

I've been playing since haddonfield had a killer shack, respectfully I ask you to shut up. Quitters still quit, I get forced into 3v1s constantly. Fix the balance, bugs, hacking, and game design. Then punish quitters. I'm open to hear about chase counterplay for Deathslinger tho, especially since he ruins every survivors fun ;)
0 -
They still dc/hook suicide, now i'm trapped in a 3v1 on a bad map or vs a "boring" killer with no chance to win. The penalty only works in a perfect world. Not one where i spawn stuck in the ground.
Dbd is NOT like most games, stop using that as an excuse for crap bandaid fixes like the dc ban and the awful mmr that will suck all fun out of veteran players
0 -
DBD is not like other games, other games with harsh bans aren't pay to win, bug riddled messed plagued with hackers and bad balance. Punish quitters when i don't spawn unable to move/use my power
0 -
Ok buddy, Let's just play out games where i spawn in and get stuck, unable to move or use my power. Or a hacker ruins the fun for everyone. I clearly gave my reasons i dc'd, and it was 1 hour, not two. People will just leave dbd for functional games because the devs won't fix legit reasons to dc and punish the veteran players they already neglect,
I'd love to hear of this fabled Slinger counterplay though, and not think "Slinger is a selfish killer ruining fun for the other four players"
0 -
I will be upfront, there are reasons to DC (hackers, people getting locked into place, the mountain of glitches they have yet to fix) But, you can't just let people DC 24/7 cause things are not going there way.
Because, well that was a problem long ago where If a survivor got down they would Dc to save a item..If a killer could not get the kill they would Dc just to block you from getting points.
It is a thing that is needed for now..But,they devs should..well, focus on solving some of these problems and not pointless crap like..making moris need 2 hooks not one..But,what do I know.
3 -
dbd is not pay to win. By that argument League of Legends, or Valorant are "Pay to win" but they are not. Bad balance is not a good excuse, they ban people for doing that in DotA as well which general has "bad balance".
The point i'm making is. Does DBD have problems? Sure, but games like DotA can often have balance problems, or bugs and such as well. And those games can last upwards of an hour. They ban you for leaving them. If you can't put up with 8 minutes of a crappy match you are having with DBD, you shouldn't be queueing up.
I'd argue a good compromise is a "surrender" option. Where you leave with whatever bloodpoints you have now. Survivors have to vote on it, and if all the living survivors agree to do it, they surrender. The other side then gets some bonus BP for the match ending early, and the side that surrenders gets to keep whatever they earned (maybe even penalize them a bit to discourage abusing it)
2 -
So you suggest not to punish those who ragequit? Why exactly they should not be punished? Because there are bugs and hackers? I know game have bugs, game breaking bugs get fixed relatively fast. We had bugs when we stuck in one place and couldn't move. These bugs was fixed long ago. And hackers are extremely rare to be reason to not punish quiters. Most of the time quiter should be punished because he doesn't want to play. And if he doesn't want to play, why would he care about penalty?
You want penalty to be removed not because there is bugs and hackers. You want to quit because killer is hard to play against and you want to play against easier one. Deathslinger only ruins your fun, and it's your own problem. You say you often get into 3vs1. Then why you leave first if you know how much it sucks? Because you don't care about the others. And, i'm sorry, but your penalty is absolutely deserved.
3 -
If you disconnect against hacker, or because of a bug, you will suffer a 4 minute DC penalty. Not a big deal, go get some ######### from the bloodweb, check your archives, pick some new cosmetics, and you can get in queue again. That doesn't happen often enough to get bigger penalty.
Frustration is not a legit reason to disconnect in any team pvp game. It is even less legit in a game where your reward for a match depends on time you spend in.
2 -
I have 2k hours in this game and the amount of times I faced a hacker is 2 times... Hell even gamebreaking bugs such as getting stuck has only happened with the Twins and the hill glitch, which everyone avoided after it happening to them once.
They also fixed those bugs not too long after they were discovered. The poor veterans weren't exactly suffering that much.
2 -
I'm against it as well. They could have simply jacked up the quitter bonus points, introduced husks, and at least allowed a safety pip. There are matches out there I am simply not invested in playing, such as an OoO against Trapper, or sweat squad against my baby Twins, or a slugging Oni who refuses to hook.
And it's not as if the penalty has done anything. I still get a DC every three or four matches. Heck, I've had two tonight, out of three matches I've played. And the penalty has been hijacked how many times so far? Just a matter of time before it happens again. In the long run, it seems more trouble than it's worth.

Before the dc penalties were a thing there was a dc pandemic. There’s no way that many people had a good reason to dc every match. It’s simple a lot of people don’t like losing. You keep bringing up the term “selfish” and that’s exactly what dcing is it’s selfish. Dcing ruins the game for everyone else in the match. You brought up how you can spawn stuck in ground unable to move as killer and survivors can take you hostage. But be completely honest how often does this happen? You can still dc this extremely rare occurrence and the penalty won’t be that bad unless you have been habitually dcing before. I have played this game since it’s release and have never spawned unable to move let alone with survivors evil enough to take the game hostage. Then you brought up unfun killers like Deathlinger. Others have already given you tips on facing him. Can you counter his power 100%? No but no killers power should be 100% counterable or else they would never catch you. Also for reference I play both sides and actually enjoy going against the Deathlinger there is no killer I hate going against. The killer is playing these killers because they want to play them neither you or anyone else has the right to dictate what killers people can or cannot play.
1 -
I've read it with an open mind, but some things I don't agree with.
I'm a doctor main rank 5. I like to play him because he is a unique killer, compared to the rest. I have no problems in higher ranks and sometimes just accept defeat. But I hate it it when survivors just die on hook or DC, 'cause he is BoRiNg, or they can't stand defeat. I think that is entitled behavior en unfair for the rest of the team. You are saying, he is annoying and I hate his chasemusic, so I am allowed to DC. No.. You queued up and for that you are forcing the others to lose. Its petty I think.
I agree that with lagging or connection problems its annoying that you get a penalty. This is for me the only reason to justify DC. I never DC, sometimes I get a SWF and get destroyed, but only because they worked as a team and I made misstakes! Suck it up and move on to the next game.
2 -
Game breaking bugs are rare. Hackers are even rarer. If you have to leave, it's only a 5 minute wait to play again unless you abuse disconnecting.
Without the penalty, survivors would dc if a strong gust of wind blew on them too hard. It was an epidemic. Now it's only every once in a while.
If you want to leave a 3v1, find the killer, get hooked, and suicide.
If you signed up to play a game of dbd you take the good with the bad. If you can't take the bad, find another game.
DC penalties aren't the end of the world nor the end of dbd. Stop pretending they are.
And just some advice: this is a video game forum, not your college dissertation. Try to be a little more concise next time.

I think it's potentially a good idea to not issue DC penalties if someone else DCs within the first minute or two of a match, as matches that start like that are usually a landslide victory for the killer. Either that, or give a really big bloodpoint bonus to survivors when that happens so their time doesn't feel wasted.
As for stuff like spawning in unable to move, that's not the fault of there being DC penalties, that's the fault of the game being buggy.
0 -
And that is exactly a point. If you get a dc every 3-4 matches with, penalties on, imagine even to get 1 normal full game without when they are off.
0 -
1. I could understand them disabling DC penalties with this patch until they get the fixes done, due to increased amount of bugs.
2. I have never seen a streamer or high profile player who doesn't quit themselves who thought the DC penalty was unhealthy.
3. The number of people who DCed prior to the penalty WAS unhealthy. The amount has lowered, and if the penalty stops DCers from playing, good. I don't want them in my games as survivor or killer.
4. People labeling quitters as selfish crybabies and people thinking the penalty is toxic are two separate points. Quitters are selfish cry babies in any circumstance except when bugs are preventing normal gameplay, playing against hackers, or when the opposing team is not actually playing the game and doing everything they can to make it long. No, that doesn't mean leaving someone slugged on the floor so a survivor has to come get them. This is Blendettes not doing gens and instead just moving around the map stealthed, or killers 4 man slugging and just watching everyone bleed to death. All three of which are reportable, two of them are bannable. The first has a forum dedicated to it, and I recommend posting bugs you find there. They tend to be fixed quicker.
5. No one can make you quit.
6. Their hacker issue is one they definitely need to fix, and soon. While it doesn't affect most matches, it affects the situations it does severely.
7. Not wanting to play with 'the survivors mess' is being a crybaby.
8. Don't spend money on buggy DLCs. I got Binding of Kin with shards because I didn't want to drop the money on something I could plainly see wasn't working.
9. Bad maps suck, but if you just quit, you never get better at them. Some are impossible to get better at (Haddenfield), but you raise those issues. Hawkins is actually playable on survivor if you know how to use more than one pallet to create infinite loops.
10. Quit penalty only punishes the players who decide to quit. Quit penalty does not punish the remaining players for players who quit. In fact, it keeps the people who quit out of your games.
11. I have won games against Huntresses with Iri hatchets. Ultimately, the skill of the survivor to avoid and dodge hatchets means more than the Huntress's skill at throwing them. It sucks, but use it to learn, rather than ragequitting. I have had them lose 3-4 gens against me because they couldn't land a single hatchet and kept having to refill.
12. Most of what you have described so far have been survivor situations. Killers put up with broken perks and maps, but most of them do not quit. This is likely because survivors are usually the ones who quit, which shows it is a matter of the mentality of the community, rather than an inherent thing; survivors have good maps and broken powers too, but almost every sentence has been about survivors.
13. We all agreed to play the game. You are a selfish loser who values YOUR fun more than the fun of four people when you quit. The fact that you couldn't see that when you posted shows you are part of the problem. I am ending with this one, because I think this is the biggest point to be made here, and most of what I have seen is just cry-baby "I should get to ruin the fun of 4 people because things didn't go my way in a multiplayer game". Skimming it, it just gets into whining about specific killers. Grow up, or stop playing the game. If you don't do either, I am glad that you don't end up in my game.
