Counter to Whispers?
If the killer shuts the hatch and has Whispers, you’re pretty well screwed. Is there any way to counter it?
What if we buffed Calm Spirit with this ability? Seems like a good match since it counters other forms of non-aura detection: crows (and by extension, Spies) and screams (and by extension, Doctor).

Calm Spirit also counters several other killer powers and addons, like Freddy snares, the "blink through survivor" nurse addon and so on. There is quite a list of things Calm Spirit can do right now. At least I would say a counter to Whispers wouldn't make sense lorewise, as it is the entity doing the tracking, not the scream causing stuff.
And I also think, Whispers is already a hard to use perk and therefore shouldn't be nerfed. On the one hand, doors setup can be bad anyway so the little buff to screwedness isn't that big of a deal imo and on the other hand, Whispers is pretty weak in midgame, so it is fine to have it being strong in early and endgame. Because once the relative map size shrinks (as gens pop, creating dead zones for killer), you will have Whispers pretty much constantly activated after 2 maybe 3 gens are finished.
I don't think it is such a big deal and Whispers can stay, I just would like more new killer powers or new tracking perks to be affected by Calm Spirit, to give it a bit higher chance of being useful. Thought about ignoring killer instinct, which would be too strong (especially thinking about Legion, but I would be fine with that vs Twins) but something like that.

Any counter to Whispers would give survivors a way to hold killers hostage by stealthing around with no way for killers to find them.
Whispers doesn't pinpoint the survivor's location, it just gives the killer a general idea of the area. It can be strong during the end game, yeah, but it can still require some luck depending on hatch and exit gate placements. Survivors have still managed to escape just because the exit gate they went to was on the other side of the map.
Giving survivors an automatic 100% counter to Whispers would be bad. I swear every time I don't run Whispers I get survivors who'd rather hide than touch gens.

Sometimes you just lose.

If Whispers was countered by Calm Spirit it wouldn't be useful during the pre-EGC part of the game either - it's a nonspecific heads up that Survivors are within 32 meters of you and as such already depends a great deal on map knowledge, game sense, and situational awareness for a Killer to be able to reliably make good use of it.
There are already a lot of easier to use tracking perks out there - making Whispers no longer reliable would kill it.
-
Instead of that, why not just have Whispers disable after the EGC triggers? The perk would remain as strong as before for the rest of the game while still eliminating the scenario where it 'just kills you'.
-
That said, I personally don't have a problem with Whispers during the EGC.
The Survivor can still try and bamboozle you if they pull off some sick stealth plays around the edges of your 32 meter range - yea it'll probably fail and the Survivor will die, but there is still a chance the Survivor can outplay you.
And additionally, keep in mind that to get to that point you'd have to kill the other 3 Survivors before they do 5 gens AND then find the Hatch first.
I don't think it's too strong or unfair for Whispers to make things easier for you after you did well/got lucky twice in a row.

Moving around, especially towards the killer. Confuse the killer by making them think you are somewhere else within the 32 meter radius.

I had one or two situations when last survivor escaped from my whispers. First one escaped when I didn't guess right which gates I should check first and gates was far away.
But second case is far more interesting. It was Lery institute, and gates were on one side. But last survivor tricked me somehow by leaving early while I patroling gates. When whispers lit I thought he is on gates #1, but then whispers gone off I thought he went to gates #2. So I got to gates #2 but he wasn't there. So I went back to gates #1, but he already made enough progress to escape.
I had enough expirience with whispers to not let this happen, but this guy tricked me anyway. I know my fauld that I relied to whispers more than on looking around. So sometimes you can even trick endgame whispers if you expect killer have it.
Sure you can't escape from whispers everytime, but endgame 1v1 is situational as well. Killer invested one perk slot for one situation that could have not happen, so he deserve to have an advantage.

If the killer killed 3 people before 5 gens were completed, found the hatch before you and closed it. You shouldn't stand a chance at that point. Hatch was your last chance. You don't deserve to have an escape route 100% of the time.
Whispers needs no counter because it isn't aura reading. Good killers can use it to pin you down but it doesn't tell you where the survivor is. Just the general direction. Hell most of the time I rarely see killers using it. It's such an underrated perk in the eyes of the community. It's my favorite tracking perk but people want that BP bonus from BBQ.

Whispers is like Spine Chill. There's no counter, only ways you can trick it.
If you're in the endgame against a killer with Whispers.... sometimes, you just gotta accept the loss.

Yeah, I pretty well agree with this sentiment. The event that triggered this thread was my teammates, apparently all SWF, went to go harass the killer. 3 minutes later, we have 2 DCs and 1 suiciding on hook. Hatch apparently spawned right under the killer’s feet, cuz he stomped it immediately.
Then he had Whispers and I had no chance.
Edge case, I know. Still frustrating AF.

Not everything needs a counter. If the killer closed the hatch, the match is pretty much over. Everyone else was dead, the killer did their job. If they decided to run a perk that happens to help them find people on doors, it's only fair that they get to use it.
Edit: just realized someone above me said the same thing so sorry about that lmao I wish you luck on your next matches then!! So this comment isn't completely pointless lol.

So why are you upset at the killer then?
What did the killer do wrong?
Your teammates screwed you over and the killer seemed to just want the game to end and not depip from quitters.
Please if you want this to stop hold your teammates who wronged you accountable instead of harassing/spiting(Getting killer nerfed) the killer because of mob mentality telling you to attack the minority.

Eh not really, you're describing one of Whispers' greatest strengths.
If they equipped Whispers and found the hatch before you, it's just over to be honest. Your only hope is waiting at an exit beforehand (anticipating them finding hatch), or having a key.

Whispers needs a counter? huh?

Poow wittle survivors cant even handle whispers lmao

Make sure 2 or more survivors aren't dead? Your literally asking "I'm losing this match and the killer has a perk that helps him secure that kill in those circumstances. Can I have a way to prevent this from working".

I don't like the idea of perks being designed to invalidate other perks. Like for example, Stridor is only used to counter Iron Will and there's essentially no reason to use it otherwise. Calm Spirit could use a buff but it needs to be more useful in general rather than be an anti-perk imo.
