Devs, is stretched resolution an exploit?
Comments
-
Fixing the stretched resolution is going to be one of the hardest things to fix in this game, I think is so hard they are going to need something outside of the box to fix it like making high wall loops infinitely high or something like that.
Coding is not sitting on a chair and stuff starts working by itself, some problems are extremely hard to fix or impossible.
2 -
Stretched res "exploit" is rather difficult to take care of. But it must be mentioned that stretched res can be used by both Survivors and Killers IIRC, so really both sides can use the exploit to their advantage.
Should it be taken care of? Yes, they should, but it'll be very difficult to do so.

Just make the tall objects in the game even taller :D
0 -
It just allows you to see behind the walls, it's not that strong 🙂
1 -
Cant do that (console player)
So it seems like it's an issue and what console players are supposed to accept it?
2 -
Silly forum poster, mods/devs aren't present here anymore
0 -
No, you can still provide any video clips etc, just no logs due to the nature of your platform.
The post was mainly there to show that they need the community to help provide logs/clips etc of the bug because its not replicatable in-studio.
1 -
It seems like they could make it so that if you use a stretched res resolution your screen could turn black, or have it purposely crash the game. Back in the day if you changed resolution half the time it would crash the game anyway, seems like it should be easy ton program something like this in.

How is it difficult to replicate you down someone and they just make no sound.
you can test this in a costume game with 2 people and how is a video of someone going down and then haveing no sound going to help them determine what is the issue.
1 -
How is it difficult? The game is built on spaghetti code where you change one number value from 4 to 5 and suddenly half of the killers in the game can't lunge, it's pretty difficult. It's also wildly inconsistent; I go weeks at a time not encountering it then one day it's every match, hence why it can't be consistently replicated in-studio.
How do videos help? They show the EXACT steps better than words ever could, that must be taken to get to the issue in question.

To answer this seriously: it is 100% on BHVR to fix resolution scaling on their end. This is a problem entirely of their own making. Users aren't altering game files to do this. They're just creating a custom desktop resolution and launching the game. Somehow the game adds vertical FOV when you stretch. I can't think of another game that does that. Some people have ultra-wide monitors or 4:3 monitors, so you can't just ban certain resolutions. It can't tell what your native resolution is, only what it's being told to display at.
4 -
And mobile has normal code. so why cant they use that code?
Yea it may bring a good amount of bugs but if it makes it easier to solve them why not use it?
0 -
I suppose it's hard to replicate because there are probably certain conditions that have to be met.
A video could help them to find those specific conditions
2 -
Blight's camera change taking 7 months is reasonable. They had to modify ALL of his animations just to fix his POV. I'm surprised it didn't take longer, in fact I wouldn't have blamed them.
0 -
Damn dude, still on about J-Flicks?
2 -
Why don't they redo the code?
Any person/company who scrip for someone else and receive money would redo their scrip if it's too ######### & create too many problem. Also considering sound bug have been present for a long time and it's quite common I wonder if they really are unable to reproduce the bug or they're just too lazy.
0 -
Spaghetti code is not an excuse.
We're talking about their JOBS man.
Its not their priority, period. Its not "complex".
2 -
I'm not an expert in that field but completely reworking the foundation of a game doesn't sound like an easy task
2 -
All they would need is to redo the sound scrip not the entire game.
0 -
And would probably end up breaking something completely unrelated in the process because the foundation of this game is THAT messy
4 -
Doesn't it require messing with your .ini file? If thats the case I absolutely would say it is.
0 -
If that's the case then the should just redo it little by little. For Christ sake many games have done this and many more will do. Some devs do care about their player base more than other and guess what? Those games end up lasting longer. The only exception are games that have no competition; they can be ######### and those who really like the gameplay will stay.
0 -
Please, point me to the code of the game and provide a simple fix to the resolution scaling that would leave the remainder in-tact and not break 30 other unrelated components of the game. If you can't do that, forgive me for not believing you that it isn't """complex"""
But yes, I'm well aware that it's not their priotity. They said so themselves, as I told OP in my first comment on this post.
Please, do some reading :)
3 -
Yeah guess what,DbD has no serious competition whatsoever so i guess we'll have to deal with all of this for an even longer time.
It sucks, but that's the way it is right now.
1 -
I think the big aspect of it too is that this game is made with unreal engine. Which gives you so many free things that much of what people might think is difficult is actually extremely easy. Resolution handling being one of them.

Why in the entity's blue butthole can the game files be accessed? I assume this is a PC only thing again? Just, why???
0 -
Not sure about multiplayer games but being able to access and edit files is common for PC games. It's how you enable certain mods in games like Fallout, for example.
Most multiplayer games like DBD scan your files to make sure nothing is out of order, afiak. I don't know why this is allowed if it's enabled by file editing.
0 -
So yet another thing us lowely consolers cannot ever do...
0 -
In all fairness I haven't played a multiplayer game in recent memory thats just allowed something like this to continute unaddressed other than DBD.
Apex Legends had an issue with players disabling the smoke particle effect from Bangalores smoke grenade ability, allowing them to see right through it. It was fixed almost immediatley and people that used it were banned. I'm not saying people that use it should be perma'd here, as its partially on the devs for not commenting, but it does give a blatant unfair advantage.
0 -
I mean, that was always the case though.
One of THE main advantages of PC gaming is being able to use mods for certain games.
0 -
Not necessarily; you can just change the displayed resolution on your monitor to achieve the same effect.
This, obviously, doesn't make it any less of an exploit. It still should be fixed.
Honestly, I can't really give an answer for it. It's a nice feature to have, because it allows you to use customised icons/portraits (which BHVR could make a fortune off of selling in the store) but at the same time allows you to change graphical options to a better setting then the presets of "Low", "Medium", "High", and "Ultra"- like, for me, my eyesight is awful so I'd have to play on Low settings normally, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see anything, but being able to change the files let's me keep shadows on low and have other things higher so the game looks nicer.
This wouldn't be a thing if the game had proper graphical settings, but unfortuantely it doesn't, so I have to resort to this.
And being able to edit these files also allows other... less innocent graphic adjustments, such as making the red stain brighter, or removing fog.
Hopefully, they'll implement the better graphics options (planned for later this year) and then lock the .ini files.
4 -
If I never saw Zubatlels perk icons again because of this I'd be very sad indeed.
0 -
Does being able to change the quality of the graphics (low, med, etc) have an effect on framerate? If so console badly profusely needs those options.
Also all this does not give me the warm & fuzzies when it comes to "we all are playing the same game no worries Crossplay is fair" argument I see thrown my way at times.
0 -
yeah, it does. playing on low graphics is significantly less taxing to a system than ultra (like, for example, my pc can handle ~120fps on Ultra without burning my legs to a crisp but could easily, and I mean easily if the game wasn't capped at 144fps, hit 200fps+ on low (not like it matters to me, i have a 60hz monitor so the most i could even see would be 60fps so thats what i run it at). hopefully when they bring these updated graphical options to pc they'll also have them on console, cause i've seen my ex-gf's ps4 run this game and it was about as pretty as a car crash.
also, anyone who says pc and console are playing the same game are wishfully thinking at best and woefully misinformed at worst, as much as id like it to be the same.
3 -
the custom perk icons/character portraits are located in a seperate directory to the .ini engine files, so if they were to lock the .ini files it'd have no impact on custom packs, thankfully

On a good day, my Xbox might give me 30 frames from time to time. Depending on what's going on in game, the indoor maps spudder about at 10-15 with occasional freezes and sneezes. Especially Lery's in the middle room too much of a muchness going on in there...

I've seen people say it helps killers too, but never really elaborated how. I don't know if I'm missing something here or if its their misunderstanding.
Since survivor POVs are 3rd person, stretching the resolution increases visibility around certain loops in a way that mitigates mind-game potential and transforming some semi-safe loops into safe loops. That difference has been evidenced in numerous screenshot examples before.
In what circumstances does stretched resolution actually benefit the killer? (And is there any footage/screens showcasing the extent of that difference in terms of actual gameplay?)
Meanwhile--though this is more inference than hard evidence--I'm under the impression that stretched-res is popular among all those tournament SWFs looking to stack up every cheap advantage they can get. However, it's (again AFAIK) not utilized by all the tournament killers they go up against... who'd surely want every cheap edge they could muster too.
Those circumstances suggest to me whatever "benefits" are either totally non-existent or so marginal to the point of irrelevance, maybe even determent. Presenting it as "both sides" exploit then would be either entirely misinformed or incredibly disingenuous.

It's used by Nurse players I know that, sometimes Blight but not really by any other killers. Obviously Shadowborn is good on Nurse as it helps her see survivors during fatigue. I'm not sure if it provides an advantage for Blight or if it was providing an advantage with old Blight due to his low pov.
There is a video of stretched resolution on Nurse. That's far more powerful than Shadowborn, it basically cancels out the lack of sight you're meant to get from fatigue.
I think the vertical view increase just isn't as beneficial on other killers, Trapper, Wraith, Pig etc which is why you won't see it as much. Not to mention tournaments are usually based around Nurse anyway.
But yeah stretched res should be fixed on both sides.

Aight bestie here's the proof:
I changed my monitor settings to 1440*1080, and here were the results:
But please tell me that it doesn't apply a stretch.
And yeah, this was minimal. I know some people that play on 1080*1080, or even 500*1080
Edit: there was apparently an issue with the screenshots, I'll try and upload the raw footage (just know there won't be any sound to it)
Double edit: my editing software is also giving me the same issue where it squishes it down, best thing I could do for you would be to stream on Discord or something.

Many thanks for the informative explanation and examples!
1 -
Still going with this? I thought you were long done lol.
0 -
I am an incredibly petty person and they did ask for proof.
1 -
This is a stupid take.
You can no longer critique any movie because you aren't a director.
You can no longer critique someone's acting because you aren't an actor.
You can no longer say anything negative about government decisions because you aren't a government employee.
So on and so forth. See how bad this argument is? It doesn't take a genius to realize not fixing certain bugs (trust me, this isn't the only big that should've been dealt with lmao) after YEARS, isn't a good thing. Even from the perspective of other developers/coders, BHVR should be doing much better than they are currently. I don't know if it's the higher ups failing the game in this department or the developers themselves; something has to change.
0 -
I like how confirmation of the issue from a Dev immediately validates the first comment in the very next post.
0 -
You're not likely to get a straight answer, the developer team is probably arguing amongst themselves and it would be unethical for one of them to make their thoughts known before they come to an official conclusion. At that point they'd probably release an official statement.

A year ago a CM said that they consider it cheating and that "they want to get rid of it but there are more important cheats to deal with"
0 -
Well I don't know what a CM is but that sounds like an expectedly noncommittal answer.
