Interview Series episode 2: GoodBoyKaru
In my first interview I asked one of the larger forum members dspaceman20 to learn his views on game balance and best way to make the game better. After that success I'm moving on to @GoodBoyKaru. Being he requested second. I have learned more of what works and what doesn't so this one will be slightly different. Thank you GoodBoyKaru for accepting this. We'll start of with simple questions again.

Hi sorry I've been reading the new Skulduggery Pleasant book, but I'm here now.
1) I discovered the game first through Markiplier and Jacksepticeye's videos on it, but didn't really get into it until a friend from school asked me about it. So I got it and I'd play with her and her friend-turned-bf-turned-ex a lot, and they'd carry me as survivor and teach me things. Killer was all on me though so naturally I was a filthy toxic survivor main for too long.
2) So, basically, I created the character of "Karu" as an idealised version of everything I wanted to be. Smarter, kinder, happier, etc. Whenever I was going through a tough time (which was like, every 30 seconds lmao) I'd imagine what he'd do and try my best to replicate it. Basically I made a fictional character to bully me into a better person.
As you do.
The "GoodBoy" bit comes from just something I like to be called- I have massive ######### insecurities so being told I'm not a colossal failure is usually nice- and something else pretty private.

6) Favourite map, hmm... Entirely depends on the killer, obviously. I think as Pyramid Head it'd definitely be Lèry's, but The Game definitely isn't bad at all either.

9) It's a combination of reasons but honestly, I think the biggest one is that survivor just... isn't fun. Since the ruin nerf, killers have been hardcore tunneling, camping, slap on NOED-with-Iribelt-because-that-makes-sense-#########-you, and red rank solo teammates haven't been the cream of the crop either. And that's not to say "look at me I'm so good" (but I mean, I am pretty good at running any killer that has actual counterplay) but you'd expect a rank 4 to not throw down shack pallet vs a Wraith at 5 gens when healthy on first hook, wouldn't you?
Also the queue times- holy moly the queue times. For me, survivor queues are instant from like 3am-2pm, but I can't play during those times (take a guess why) so killer queues were just... faster, so I played more killer.
Basically, survivor just stopped being fun, so I moved to killer.
10) I was so sick and tired of the forums being a negative shitshow that I thought, "why not" and just put a cute cow in a Sluzzy thread. People seemed to like it, so I did it more often. Cute things make people happier and make their day better (unless you're a dickhead and tell me it's "weird af" or post a ######### hamburger) so I put them places to make people happier.
We all need some light, after all.

11. So would you say survivor is more unenjoyable for you because of what killers could bring like Noed or Iri Head? Or because of your potato teammates not fixing gens and throwing every pallet?

11) Definitely the killer. I can manage it if the killer is, say, a Bubba who plays fairly and applies pressure to everyone. Even if I lose and my teammates are useless, I feel like I've stood a great chance and even though it's frustrating I would've had fun. If it's a Pig player who tunnels like their life depends on it (ahem this one streamer i cant name due to forum rules no its not scorpionz ahem) through my active RBT then not even having the most pallet efficient team who slam gens can help me because there's literally nothing I can do in that scenario. The killer decides if I'm going to have fun as a survivor or not, whilst I decide if I'm going to have fun as killer or not.

12) On the killer side, Mindbreaker. On the survivor side, We're Gonna Live Forever.
13) On the killer side to face, Prove Thyself, and to play with, NOED. On the survivor side to face, NOED, and to play with, it might be Balanced Landing (though No Mither is also a viable pick).
14) The grind- wanting to get all of my survivors P3 50 with every perk unlocked- and new chapters. Though I've had to take a lot of breaks recently cause the last chapter I've actually got any use from was Descent Beyond (Undying)- Binding of Kin and All-Kill have been... let downs, let's say.

First person ive seen in a while saying they love the grind. I try to get my friends into the game and they don't like having to scale a mountain for fun builds. Strong build theyd just need to level like bill david jake and meg. Maybe laurie to. I don't mind the grind personally because i never really experienced it starting back in 2017 i just level a new killer and survivor when they come out but i do feel for new people.

That's why I don't mind it too- because it's just an extra 6 perks every 3 months. I couldn't imagine having to do all of this again though, and the game 100% needs to be more new player friendly.

I haven't prestiged once. Now that we know some of the ways of GoodBoyKaru. We'll now move on to the balance and health of the game. We'll cover the big recent news Trickster already getting buffs. And Coldwind being changed next. Then talk about the bloodweb.
15. Trickster upon release was called the worst killer in the game by the community no uniqueness and overshadowed by Huntress, Slinger, and Plague for once. The devs have announced with the 4.6.1 bugfix they're tossing on buffs. But do you think the devs should've done this on release with an extra week and community criticizim of Trickster. Implementing perhaps ricochet an idea promoted by some. And do you believe this shows dev inconsistency fixing this quickly while other killers like Trapper still suffer?

Should it have been done on release? Definitely. He needs to be a lot more fun to play, and a lot stronger to play, and he needs to feel like someone with a power, not someone with a hindrance. I know I mained old Freddy, so I'm used to hindrances, but at least he was 115% and had build-in slowdown.
Does it show inconsistency? Yes, but at the same time Trapper is base-game, Trickster is a brand new DLC, it'd make sense they'd want the new DLC to be... well, not the worst killer in the game.
But something else, is that he's ass to face, and these new changes don't address anything that makes him unfun to deal with. He genuinely feels like Old Legion with extra steps, and his terror radius suffers from the Deathslinger problem of "it's a ranged killer that you can't ######### hear coming."
I miss the times of them creating a killer that's actually fun to face. They were on such a roll with Demo and Oni and then they released four duds in a row :(

I mean they brutually murdered old billy (in my opinion) who besides some addons was generally considered one of the funnest killers to face. I miss when he was one of the best tbh. Even a instasaw billy was funner then spirit

16) Yep, that crown can go back to Twins or Clown, he'll be bad but not the worst imo.
17) Deathslinger- no reaction time to his shots, his counter is through sticking to gens as efficiently as possible leading to a dull game for both sides as nobody likes 3 minute games where everyone holds M1, and there's no chase interaction. Just by existing he has permanent zoning, his terror radius doesn't ######### exist, and it's just unenjoyable. Also I have yet to face a Deathslinger player who doesn't play from Subway and hit me through walls.
Blight- they all use the exact same build (Ruin/Undying/BBQ, and about 40% use Tinkerer), and don't get me started on the damn J-flick. It's just boring to deal with.
Twins- to be fair it's moreso Victor, and Victor's piggyback. If you're injured, you're #########. If your team are injured, you've lost, no Claudette self-caring in the corner isn't helping I need healing over here). If you actually dodge his hitbox- which, for the record, is worse than Huntress' and I never thought I'd say that- and crush him, good news! He's back in action in about 3 seconds! Hope you have fun!!
And yeah, Pyramid Head. Amazing to play, awful to deal with.

Oh, and I agree- he needed his add-ons looked at, not a damn overheat system that then ######### up his animations and what is what roar?!
Yeah, Billy was fun, and still is when they don't 4man 5 gen slug with Infectious because the Baby Meg Patrol decided to follow me around all game.

18. What makes Clown or Twins the worst? In case two Clowns of this forum decide to read this. And what Twins? I thought they were extinct?

18) With Clown it's his lack of map mobility. Sure, he ends chases in seconds, but that doesn't mean anything if you're on Fractured Cowshed, they pre-drop every pallet, gens go in half a minute and there's this one Blendette you can't find.
Twins because they take twice as long to do everything as every other killer except for 4man slug or Victor Camp and that's just... boring. For both sides involved, at least imo. So I like to play as fairly as possible and doing so they're just... really weak.

For the points you made on clown wouldnt michael and say ghostface be worse since they don't even offer antiloop like clown does. Michael for instance has been stated the worst for a while now. Starts out weaker then all other killers. Stalk can take forever against good teams. Has no anti loop and no map pressure. Even tier 3 isnt to threatening because hes still a m1 killer. I just always thought since clowns buff michael might be back there now. (Unless michael like tombstones at 5 gens maybe?)

I'd say Michael isn't anywhere near good but the ability to start Undetectable to OOO gamers shouldn't ever actually be underestimated. They'll know where you're coming from but not who you are, and you can easily get the sneak of a lot of players. Plus Tombstone Piece.
James- I don't mention his true name because I despise him so much- can go Undetectable mid-chase. Anyone with OOO immidiately gets ######### and you no longer have to moonwalk. + 99'ing individual survivors can be lethal.

I will not prestige BECAUSE of the grind. I've cultivated Cheryl with the perks and items I want, I'm not starting over- which is also why I keep playing on console despite getting a PC 😒

Fair enough. Speaking of Fractured Cowshed and Coldwind
19. Recently on DBD twitter they posted concept art for The Thompson House most likely showing that Coldwind will get a graphical update/rework next. This realm is the oldest left and most commonly viewed as survivor Sided. With Fractured Cowshed and it's loops into loops put as the third most survivor sided map in Otzdarva's list according to the CIA. The graphical reworks have often been viewed as ineffective and make some maps worst like Groaning Storehouse. Do you believe the upcoming changes will improve the quality of gameplay for both sides. Or worsen for another and nitpick any specific map if you need to. And do you believe they'll pair this with another realm? Or have a solo like with MacMillan?

I mean- the concept art didn't show any corn so I'm incredibly hopeful on that front (######### off, corn). Hopefully it'll be a lot more spaced out, or just non-existent.
In terms of if it'll make it better ot worse, I don't know. Obviously I hope better but I wouldn't put it past them to somehow make Cowshed worse.
I think they'll do this one solo. It's too large of a realm to pair properly with Swamp or Red Forest, both of which also need a massive amount of attention to fix too, and it was already delayed once due to it being so big.

20. You seem to not be bothered by the grind while others say there needs to be something to reduce ideas proposed are the abolishment of perk tiers. Or the removal of certain offerings like luck ones. The devs have taken steps to reduce the grind introducing daily rituals and the archives. Do you believe the bloodweb needs a huge change or are things fine as they are?

Yes, 100%, the bloodweb needs a change. Bloodpoint gains need to be boosted or the web needs to be made substantially cheaper because this game is absolutely not new player friendly. Removing perk tiers, removing useless add-ons and offerings, making Daily Rituals actually give a decent amount of points, all good ideas. The game system itself needs a fundamental rework- perhaps even moreso than when legacy was released to people- and I hope BHVR do it soon.

21. An often requested feature to help the newer player experience is the creation of a training mode something requested for years but already present in DBD mobile. How do you believe a training mode should be implemented? and what other ways could be done to help the new player experience?

Training mode: a team of bots or a bot killer with a team of people- similar to how Paladins does it except obviously asymmetrical. You'd have three different difficulty settings and you'd have them programmed to make decisions after having asked newer, experienced, and veteran players how they'd react to each situation individually (to match thre three difficulty levels). Get the playerbase, the people who know how to play the damn game, involved in the process to make it more accurate.
Other ways to help the new player experience:
- Trial characters (every, say, Saturday and Sunday then two random killers and two random survivors are unlocked for free for all players). You can level these characters up but teachable perks cannot be unlocked until they are purchased completely.
- Boosted bloodpoint gains. Reduces the grind.
- A functional matchmaking system (hey MMR bestie please work)
- A better tutorial
- There are now two Shrines of Secrets- one with 4 killer perks and one with 4 survivor perks. At least one of those perks is guaranteed to be from a licensed DLC, one has been used in a previous Archive challenge, one is for use in a current archive challenge if applicable, and one is completely random. This applies to both shrines.
To give an example for the last one, I'll use the Survivor Shrine. Perk 1 would be Stake Out, from a licensed DLC (the Saw Chapter). Perk 2 would be Dead Hard- previously used in a challenge during Tome 2. Perk 3 would be Any Means Necessary, as it's needed during the current Archive, if not for the current level. Perk 4 would be random, so could be anything from Decisive Strike to Deliverance.

22. As we know the killer meta recently had a change with the nerf of Undying only guaranteeing one totem respawn instead of a possible 3. And before that PGTW was nerfed. While there are more killer perks useful then survivor perks the majority still are niche or not good. Prime example is everything owned by Deathslinger and Freddy. Do you believe there should be a bigger priority on nerfing strong perks or buffing weak perks? And if so which category should they focus on like tracking or chasing? And what do you believe is the current killer meta? And where can you see it going?

Personally, I'd much rather they buff weaker perks before nerfing the stronger ones, with the exception of when perks are completely busted and/or screw over solo teams (Third Seal and Knock Out both spring to mind for the last one; imo Blindness needs a change after the OOO rework comes in as it just messes up solos).
I don't think they should focus on any particular category- if a perk is weak, buff it. If it's overbearingly strong, nerf it. If it primarily affects solos, rework it.
IMO, the current killer meta depends on the type of killer. For higher mobility killers, such as Nurse, Spirit, Blight, it'd be Ruin/Undying/BBQ, with an extra spare perk (for Spirit, Stridor, for Nurse, I'm All Ears, for Blight, Tinkerer, etc). For lower mobility killers, such as Pyramid Head, Clown, or Trapper, it'd be PGTW/Corrupt Intervention/BBQ, then the extra perk slot (I'm All Ears on Pyramid Head, for example).
Unless something incredibly gamechanging comes in, or they change Ruin back to how it was in December 2019, I don't think it's going anywhere either.
