How does matchmaking actually work in this game.

So I've been playing both sides and I've noticed a weird disconnect in how the game chooses who I match with.

When I play survivor at rank 5 (always solo) I get teammates and killers that both act and feel like they are around my skill level. (with the exceptions of a very few bad eggs).

When I play killer at rank 8-9 I get the world's best (red rank usually) survivor team against me. To the point where I can visually see a major gap in experience and skill that leaves me baffled just how good these guys are. (or just a solid reminder of how much I still have to learn/how bad I am)

I am very curious how dbd chooses who gets matched with each other and if being a survivor or killer has different algorithms built into them.

Is that how it works? That's sad. How do we even begin to equalize the player base for that?

Make Killer more fun and appealing to the average player.

How would you go about doing that?

I for one find killer absolutely amazing to play as. Growing up watching Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre made the characters in the game an absolute joy to get ahold of.

I always saw playing killer as just being the bad guy in my own horror film

Playing killer feels like a chore and is just not fun when your forced to play against SWF. It's even less fun when your forced to play against groups that are much higher ranks than you and know every trick in the book.

Problem is they can’t really make killer stronger since then solos will suffer greatly

That's what happens when you design a game to be played solo, then add the option to play with friends. I know people complain about solo, but it's actually my favourite part about the game now days. Granted i play as casual as you can possibly play this game now since i'm just so tired of endless SWF.

I enjoy solo too and it’s my main mode but it can definitely be frustrating at times

Honestly they need to give survives way more info during game to close the gap between swfs and solos then just buff the weaker killers aggressively like how they did with wraith. Its more of an issue that no matter what they do if they just flat buff a role too much in one update... well you can imagine how that would go down with this community even if it was just a lot of minor stuff.

currently it matches based on your rank, to make the game playable for everyone , the longer you are in queue the less restriction it puts on who you get matched against.

The devs are pretty vague about the actual inner workings of it, but a lot of the people commenting are fairly correct. On the survivor side, it seems to try to put people together based on rank and skill level(apparently there are some metrics associated with this), but it practice, it ends up depending on who is available in the queue at that time without making people wait for 20 mins or more to get a match(that used to be a thing, too, before cross-play). I had matches last night where there was me(purple ranks)with a red rank, a yellow rank and a grey rank against a rank 1 or 2 killer.

It does come down to Killer availability as well. We do need more people to play Killer, and although I don't necessarily agree with most of the folks who say Killer is so impossible to 'win' with that it's not worth it, I do get why some don't like it.

Myself, I only play Killer about 20% of the time, for two reasons. Either A), I get stuck with a SWF team that is only interested in gen rushing, flashlight spamming, pallet/locker/geography exploiting and generally being asshat-ish, or B)I get put in a match where the Survivor Stoopidity Index is clear in the red, and that's like shooting fish in a barrel. It's a canned hunt, and it's LOL-ish for a few matches, but then it gets tedious.

If the system worked perfectly and there's enough survivors and killers of various ranks.

The system looks for players up to 8 ranks from the killer depending on how long they wait in queue.

Players below rank 15 can be paired with any rank given they waited in queue long enough.

In reality, there's not enough players of various ranks to fill lobbies. After long queue lengths the system will pair players that waited the longest.

This post implies that matchmaking works

People need incentives to play killer more. I've recently started playing a lot more killer, and although I just unlocked The Blight (who is really fun by the way! Slam slam slam HAIYAH), I think a lot more people feel better having teammates to play around than being on their own. Killer requires more thinking on the spot, dealing with mind games and all, pressuring survivors into a certain zone of the map, etc.

I'd say maybe offer bonus Bloodpoints but I don't even think that'd cut it, at least not in the long term. This game is SWF sided and people like playing with their friends, so although they might try killer out from time to time, they won't stick with it if there is no longterm benefit.

Also matchmaking is a joke right now, especially in the evenings/at night. Wait for SBMM cause that actually produced really fair matches (at least for me in red rank survivor).

And then there's the killer side. Depending on how long the survivors have waited in queue, the Matchmaing will ignore killer rank to get the survivors a match. when I was at rank 17 I was matched against a full rank 1, 4 man SWF. when I saw what I was facing, I just stood infront of the exit gate and made them play Skill Check Simulator 2021.

    It doesn't tbh.

The game tries to match you up with other players within ~6 of your rank, but after enough time in queue if a match hasn't been found it basically gives up and throws you into the next lobby available to get you a game.

I love playing killer but every other game against SWF just really grinds you down after a while.

    It doesn't.
