Can we go back to this being a horror-based game?...
Step 1, by the way: Don't have Survivors be actually stronger than the Killer.
When a big strategy is to body block the Killer from being able to move freely, such as to prevent a hooking, is that not the wakeup slap that Survivors don't have a god damn SINGLE fear in this entire game???
This game really lost its identity. And - yes - I blame the Survivor Lobbyists. They got this game gripped by the balls.
Imagine a Halloween night with your girlfriend, pop in a scary movie, turn the lights off, and then it was just Jason running through a warehouse, bumping into corners and having a bunch of pallets fall onto him, and he stumbles out from the debris, his mask slightly askew, and then a bunch of 8 year olds start clickity clacking flashlights in his face and he just grunts and moans and flails around, and runs into more pallets falling on top of him, and then one 8 year old in the background is just leaping in and out of a red closet over and over for no reason...
Yeah.
DBD...
What a game...

When you get past 100 hours you realise this isn't a horror game. Survivors are going to do things like bodyblock because it helps the team and it's a smart way to play, we can't expect them to play like rank 20 bots forever.

You are right on this one, my friend, but the creepy ambience we used to have certainly helped, even for those way past 100 hours.

This was never a horror game. Itโs always been a horror themed party game.

This game was NEVER a horror game. It's always been an action game (and the dev's have acknowledged this fact too), and making a horror game would require so much work it wouldn't even work, in fact it would kill the game. Not only would most of the players leave because the game has been reworked into something entirely but newer players would veer away from a game with a dead player base.

I do actually miss 2016/2017 DBD maps. Back when they used to be darker in tone and the mist was more prevalent. The mist regents hardly ever show up in my matches and for the maps that are dark like McMillan and Autohaven, it's not the same kind of darkness from a few years ago. It's kind of hard to explain lol.
4 -
Yeah I agree that the maps did have a darker and creepier feel back then.
4 -
it's hide and seek with a horror coat of paint
and like, maybe an actual hide and seek gamemode where survivors are perma exposed and the objective is to survive until time runs out would be fun. but that doesn't need to be the base game.
2 -
Wraith body blocking whilst he uncloaks
Bubba & Billy body blocking for the easy down
Hag trapping & body blocking at pallets
Works both ways so don't pretend survivors have an advantage
7 -
It is? It has all the elements of a horror game. I think most people confuse "horror" with only being "scary". While horror can be scary, it doesn't have to be limited to only being scary, shock and disgust are what go into horror as well. For example, you have Hag eating survivors' livers during her mori, people would consider that disgusting. Then you have the stealth killers or killers using perks like tinkerer to get the jump on you, that is shock.
The game is scary when you first start playing it, it becomes far less scary after an extended amount of time.

Nailed it! That is what made the game creepy, but now it is basically gone. It is probably the first topic on my extremely long list of reasons why I absolutely despise the Realm Beyond.
Wish we could have those maps back, somehow.

I kind of agree with this.
I used to be stuck in the mindset that this game should be scary way back when. Fast forward a couple years and I've realized it really is just a game of time efficiency coated with a hint of horror, rather than a horror game itself.
I'm quite okay with that too, as I enjoy time management activities in general.
5 -
Same, even though it didn't particularly make the game any scarier, it still had a much better feel when everything was a lot darker instead of the bright sunny maps we have now lol.

Okayyyyyyy guys, way to bury the message in semantics...
No, it was never a HORROR game. But you know exactly what I mean.
Survivors used to have to worry about things. They used to fear the Killer. Maybe not in an IRL-TERROR sort of way. But in a way where they respected the Killer's strength. In a way where, if the Killer was nearby, you wanted to try to hide, rather than be more inclined to literally FIGHT him because you're strong enough to do so.
I want to go back to the times where Survivors weren't literally exposing themselves in broad daylight open fields, because they WANT the Killer to chase them around circles, because they will ALWAYS be able to get away.
I know that Survivors were Top Dog even on day 1, especially with the infinites on maps. But I still feel like they showed respect to the strength of a Killer. And I feel like stealth was a core gameplay skill for Survivor, while nowadays it's like a niche curveball that you see once in every 20 games.
Nowadays??? Survivors are legitimately stronger than the Killer now. They don't opt to hide, they opt to duke it out head-on. "I'll perk the ######### out of you, Trapper!"
It's just disappointing to me. Like, I only have interest in playing Killers that I think bring the most "fear" element to Survivors, because that's the spirit of the game in my opinion. However, NO KILLER does this, because that element has been perked off the face of the earth.
Meh...
Guess I'm a minority here.

Survivor lobbyists. What a conspiracy.
SWF is stronger than most killers, maybe. Have you ever played survivor? Ever tried solo queue? You should. It may give you some perspective.
4 -
Indeed! I still don't understand why they decided to create a sunny map for a horror game. It is beyond me.
0 -
dude. the post isn't about body blocking.
1 -
Yes; Survivor's probably my most played? Not sure, but it's probably close anyway.
I don't even use the actual broken ######### about Survivor, like flashlights... (or teamwork on coordinated teams, which by the way, is actually statistically what most Survivor parties are)... or the good perks, cuz I don't have them unlocked...
And I STILL feel totally safe and comfortable when a Killer is chasing me. Tunneling me, even.
Every time I get hit, I feel like I really ######### it up on my end, because I had every advantage. (Or perhaps just because I didn't know a map at all, so I accidentally ran into a dead end.)

This...is kinda verifiably false and cringe.
7 -
Ok. Sure.
Elaborate? Or nah? Just false and cringe?

Killers have literally never been stronger than survivors, so by your own reasoning this has never been a horror based game, lol.
5 -
Yes, survivors don't fear you.
Because you're not actually a killer. You're a dude playing a video game against other people playing a video game.
And eventually, you learn a game.
You learn how to play it effectively. You learn that the chase is the most fun part of the game. You learn that holding M1 is the least fun part. You learn how to help while engaging in the most fun part of the game. You learn how to do silly, fun things.
I've been playing for a good 'ol while now. I don't fear the killer, and I don't expect to be feared.
It doesn't keep me up at night.
12 -
I still get scared by this game, but imagine being stuck in a loop where you face killers only to wake up at a campfire to do it all again. After awhile I'd start to just do what I can to help out lol! But also, fear unlocks adrenaline; We can be scared and yet face our fears at the same time, and honestly without this type of bravery in a character then I doubt that the 'final girl' cliche would have become popular. It's rare to see a first time player take risks, so with time they become braver and face the killer for the benefit of the team which is awesome and definitely part of that 'final girl' mentality :)!!!

This post, compared to the post above it, are like... ... first of all, night & day.
Second of all, a little bit of an important element to this discussion, as well.
Grandpa has this bizarre sociopath outlook on it. "IT PIXELS. PIXELS NO SCARY. PIXELS NO HURT ME. GAME NO SCARE."
And then Wifey goes deep on the imagination with it, almost RP'ing in her head what the scenario would be like.
More of the latter would be nice among people. But I feel like more and more people are becoming the former, as imagination dies out from our species...

I agree with you on this! I love the Silent Hill map because of the startling noises, the body falling out of the locker, etc! I wish they'd do more atmospheric things like that even if they are campy and cheesy! I'd also love for the fog to return to the game. Having full map visibility takes away from some of the spookiness of having a Michael staring at you from the distance or a Ghostface creeping up on you. Stalker Killers seem a little disadvantaged without the fog which is a shame!
2 -
Sure, I'll elaborate. Be sure to quote people, they don't get a notification otherwise.
The mere fact that you complained about flashlights and said they were OP indicates you are a relatively new player, as most experienced players know how to deal with flashlight squads.
Most Survivors are Solo, per the last stats graphic we got.
And the cringe is "Every time I get hit, I feel like I really [BAD WORD] it up on my end, because I hadย everyย advantage." This statement alone makes it clear that you haven't played very long, which isn't necessarily a problem.
Have you considered that your experience, or lack thereof, could be tampering with your view of the game and it's balance?
12 -
By the Entity, that is exactly why Midwich is my favourite map! It just feels creepy, it feels right.
And yes, the Fog must return, we should embrace spookiness again.

How to make it a horror game its gonna need a lot of options in settings
1 first person
2 a realistic mode where the terror radius is suppress
3 a brightness setting
4 console optimization
5 an option to disable all ui
1 -
Hey.
I remember when I first started playing and it was all new and I had no idea what the perks did, what killer powers did or what a good way to play was and could barely hit a skill check. So there was lots more stealth play and the hole thing was more scary.
The more you play the less scary things are and you get used it the game and know what perks and powers do so you get more confident.
I would never have used "were gonna live forever" to get protection hits because I wanted to be as far away from the killer as possible.
Just comes with time and experience I guess.

I bought this game because I thought it is a horror game. But after ranking up to the green ranks I realized that survivors don't respect the killer's presence at all. Bodyblocking, flashlight clicking and finishing a gen right next to the killer makes this game feel rather like an action party game that fails to be horror.
1 -
Tell that to F13 Players (If they still exist) I was addicted to that game and when Im not jason i was legit scared of him every match (Ive got about 1228 hours on that game lol)

Flashlight are the second worst item in the game my friend, learn to counter them

Dbd is a horror based game.
It's just that exposure numbs horror so that can't be the full game.
If you had a 1000 hours playing outlast then it wouldn't be scary anymore too.
And for that very reason very few people have a 1000 hours on outlast. Unlike dbd that have quite a few people with that number and above
