Kates appearance on mobile

So Kate Denson got her facial rework on DBD mobile and all I can say is this is how it should’ve been for the live game on console/PC. It’s SO MUCH closer to the original concept art and it looks amazing!!! She’s actually my mobile main because of how great she looks! Why couldn’t she get that same treatment on the live version?

Downgrading the character's models was always a bad idea to begin with. There is a reason why the ones that look better are the ones which barely changed.

They should've left the models alone. And the same thing can be said about MANY things in this game.

Yeah even the smaller touch ups like Jeff just ended up making them look worse.

Precisely, my friend. I've been saying this since those stupid changes were first announced.

I hate what they did to my girl Kate. I used to main her, but I just can't even force myself to play her anymore. She's just too fugly.

So on mobile she doesn't look like she's been scowling for 40 years?

She looks so much better here. I wish this is what she would've looked like instead of what we got.

It's not a secret that mobile gets it right.

Do we also Wanda talk about how bad her menu portrait is in the PC version?

Yea, what were we thinking preferring the old Kate?

The one on the left says "I'm a little scared but cautiously optimistic", while the one on the right says "I'm a 40 year old divorced future cat lady and would like to speak to the manager".

The new model may, arguably, look better under nice lobby lighting conditions at the right camera angles. In game, however, with DBD's dated engine and lighting, the "low-quality" model actually looks better in most cases.

Because using her only cosmetic that got objectively ruined to prove a point = a bad character model.

All this shows is that Kate's face isn't fitted for dark makeup and Laurie's hair. In fact I argue that all of the women who sport heavy makeup in their cosmetics look worse because the modeling crew aren't makeup artists. They all just get washed out in the end. The only reason old Kate could somewhat support that was because of how cartoony her face was. Her features were already exaggerated so arching her eyebrows and making them pencil thin wouldn't do anything. I mean, let's also not pretend that this cosmetic was good to begin with, no one used it because it always looked bad.

Now that Kate's face is more realistic, it doesn't carry across well at all because that's not a look on anyone. As I said, it washes her out completely and as you said, ages her 20 years.

The main issue with Kate's model is the facial animations distorting it in match. I think they improved it, she certainly doesn't look as angry as she once did, but that's also an issue that is present on every single character in the game at the moment. It's an ever so slight distortion to their faces that elongate certain areas or causes them to droop. That was the main issue with Jill to a more extreme, but it just stayed on her for us to see. They "reverted" Jill's face but as we all know it's not how it looked upon launch, and that's what's happening to every single model right now.

    Kate is also missing eyelashes.

I partly use that example because I'm still mad that I bought that hairstyle for auric cells before they butchered it in the rework. If they wanted to fix some of her older styles they could have gone for the ponytails and the 50's style because almost no one uses them with how bad they look.

I agree with most of what you wrote here. I never thought any of the models were perfect, but many of the updates changed the facial structure of the originals to a degree where they no longer look like the characters we liked.

I think you may be right that its due to the animations making all of them look pissed off instead of scared/neutral.

Imo Kate's rework looks much better in the still shots they showed without animations applied. Same for Meg and maybe some others.

It really is strange that out of all the cosmetics, that one was the one they decided to rework completely. With her cosmetics they did do slight adjustments that just, were kind of out of left field. Her Beach Eyes cosmetic that dropped a month before the rework got reworked to have a different texture and to be longer. Given how recent it was you wouldn't expect them to view it as an issue.

I do they think they replaced her Rockabilly hair textures to make it fuller. Same with the ponytail, it has a bit more volume than being stuck to her skull. No slight adjustments can fix them to the point people are actively going to choose to wear them though.

I definitely think the facial animations are where everything is going a bit wonky. Like in the mobile version, she looks just like the still shot you sent. I don't believe the modeling team was completely capable or at least they just didn't test the models as they should be in game when they initially decided to do this. Having active facial animations on the survivors when that wasn't really ever planned for them to have those and then to have to make a skeleton to do that, then their faces becoming a drooping mess probably wasn't a foreseeable issue for them.

All I can hope for is for them to improve their light engine because it's so unflattering even on killers it becomes unflattering. New Lery's looks pretty neat but the light washes out every character that comes in contact with it. Then there's the unintended creases we probably were never meant to see on survivors faces as C3Tooth pointed out above.

It's less of the fault of the character model as it is literally everything else in the game.
