DS shouldn't have a skill check
I personally don't need it. But with how much killers tunnel nowadays, I run it a lot. Now here's the issue, the skill check inside of the perk lags 1/2 of the time when I use it, resulting in it being wasted. Because of this, I think DS shouldn't have a skill check. Not to mention it hurts bad players, aka the ones who need it the most.

I know, right? As a console player, it almost always lags. Pretty annoying. I have to try and hype myself up before the pick up so I am ready for the stutter too. Lol.
25 -
Yeah, I have to pray to literally God every time so it doesn't lag lol
2 -
I like that this issue suddenly keeps coming up. I'm curious why people are just now noticing that DS's skill check is a broken gatekeeper in a game riddled with performance issues. I'd even be happy with the devs just making the skill check bigger so that the performance issues impact it less. When the skill check is so small, the slightest blip means you're screwed. On console, slight blips are a good day.
I'm disappointed that so far there's been no statement to let people know whether or not this is being looked into.

I wouldn't mind it.
3 -
Absolutely. Ever since the latest change, it's been a pretty balanced perk all things considered. You can't just hop on a gen, save a survivor etc and then still get your out of jail free card. If the Killer is tunneling you, you get one extra chance, perfectly fair.
4 -
definitely I find it dumb how a perk can just be unusable because of lag
4 -
In a perfect world with good console optimization, the DS Skill-Check would be fine, but with how badly consoles are optimized, I wouldn't mind removing it
4 -
That calls for better optimization, not a DS buff lmao
7 -
And what should players do during those five years while we wait for optimization to happen? Just... not play? Actually, I'd like that; I've been avoiding playing, so it'd be a warm fuzzy feeling if other people joined me.
But asking for DS to be usable isn't quite the same thing as asking for a buff. The skill check is not the purpose of the perk. It made sense when DS was just a "haha, screw you for downing me, killer!" perk but now it only works after an unhook and only for 60 seconds and only if the survivor doesn't do any one of a myriad of things to progress the game. The tiny skill check prevents new players and anyone experiencing any performance issues from using DS. That's just unnecessarily blocking a large group of players from being able to get any use out of the perk. Altering the skill check doesn't affect the amount of time during which DS is active, it doesn't affect the crapton of requirements surrounding DS's activation, and it doesn't lengthen the stun. Some of us just want to be able to use DS at all.

Not play?
What a gross over-reaction.
You do not need Decisive Strike to play. I have not ran that perk since it was nerfed.
5 -
lol I was talking about not playing because of the performance issues, not because of DS. There are changes that can be made to make the game better in the meantime while we wait for optimization. And optimization might never come.

I would gladly remove the skillcheck required to activate the perk, but in exchange that DS will be deactivated if you:
1 take a protection hit (since they want to put borrowed time as a basekit skill, if you are bodyblocking with BT you are pretty much asking for being tunneled)
2 when you jump in a locker
3it will deactivate once all generators are done (you aren't being tunneled anymore at this point) or if you need to keep it active even in the endgame then just deactivate it if you are opening the exit gates (this is another survivor objective after all so they shouldn't be rewarded like the old DS for doing the objective under the killer's nose without worrying about anything)
5 -
I prefer to put the same skill check every time a killer hooks someone. if the killer fails, you escape
0 -
Agreed. Where's the skill in getting tunneled?
3 -
Seriously? The game cannot render the wheel without stuttering? What console is it?
I've never noticed on mines but don't run that perk on console.
1 -
We are talking about DS, not about hooks, so stop being sarcastic and say something constructive to the topic otherwise do not write anything at all...
4 -
stop baiting bro it's not even funny
8 -
Why not. it would be a small band aid fix for console lag
2 -
I agree with both except the first one. If the survivor takes a protection hit they should not lost DS as half of the time the unhooker can force BT
0 -
Do all other skill checks lag on console too? Maybe they should just remove skill checks...
0 -
I'm gonna disagree with the protection hit one.
Even being remotely close to an injured survivor counts as a protection hit intentional or not.
Would be a buff to bubba camping as well.

Overcharge skill checks and the small stage 2 hook skill checks are also problems. It's because the fps is so low and the skill checks are so small that there's no room for error, which means any stutter, any fps inconsistencies, any frame drops are basically an automatic fail.
But only the DS skill check is preventing people from using their own perk which they equipped. And the game has a habit of getting kind of stuttery during certain in-game actions, like the pick-up animation.
1 -
Some of these replies, man.
7 -
If you can't hit the DS skill check you deserve the hook.
If other skill checks lag they should remove them too.
If the game is so badly optimised on console then they shouldn't have sold it to console players in the first place.
5 -
That would be an awful idea since protection hits are pretty random. Imagine I get farmed from the hook, the person has DS, and dodges the killer and it ends up hitting me. I took a protection hit because I was farmed, and now it's free tunnel town. No thanks.

I own it on PS4 and Switch. It only just released on Switch in 2019 and there is no new Nintendo console to replace the Switch. Switch was supposed to have cross-progression with PC like a year ago, which I would have taken advantage of had that actually happened, but it didn't (and there's nothing I can do about it). Not that any of that matters, because:

Lag only matters with ds checks because it's a one time use

Fair enough, I suppose.
Just feels like slamming your head against the wall, especially after the last Q&A "update".

Now that you are absolutely correct about. It's extremely frustrating. I'm loathe to give any more money to BHVR because of how many things they've failed to follow through with on console. I bought an external SSD for my PS4 Pro to fix the issues that the Resident Evil chapter brought with it. I'm still kinda ticked I had to do that, spending that kind of money to play one game. (Not to get cool new stuff for a game, but to play what I already paid to play.) So, I think that's sort of where the line got drawn. I'm more likely to quit playing the game entirely than to spend any more on new hardware just for DbD. (All my other PS4 games run beautifully, so yeah, going to PS5 would be specifically for DbD.) Spending more money on DbD would be like betting on this game to improve, and... well, I'm neither an optimist nor a gambler.
I'm willing to purchase the game on PC if there's cross-progression with either of the platforms I already own, but that's about it.
Anyway, that's my own personal nonsense. Everyone has their own reasons for sticking with their current platform.

I assume the default answer is "Because a PS5 is ungodly expensive", which is fair. I just think mods saying "Don't question it" doesn't actually answer the underlying issues.
I know Patrick said something about a minimum number of milliseconds of ping, or... whatever that tech jargon was, but I am not sure if they are ever going to reach that point.

Yeah especially if you are old gen or switch hitting that skill check consistently can be quite difficult
1 -
tell that to the R key to drop survivors, you can mash it, hold it down, it is about as non responsive as a key can get.
Imagine if the E key for deadhard responded like the R key does for killers
3 -
There's no need for a skillcheck. Although in rare circumstances where you want to save DS for a your second unhook, it should be activated by a press of a button. So you can choose whether to use it, or save it.
2 -
DS should for sure have its skill check. It shouldnt be a free "im immortal" perk. Yeah it sucks to be tunneled (which is only acceptable in certain situations) but 80% of survivors abuse the DS by going down on purpose just because they can't be picked up or jumping in a locker to bait the killer taunting them. Personally whenever a survivor uses DS as an attacking perk rather than a defensive perk i will eat the DS then chase them down and kill them. Whenever I have used DS i have never seen the perk lag what so ever for me so maybe its a console issue but DS needs to remain with a skillcheck else it would be even more powerful as there is no risk of missing it.
2 -
It needs something. At least a button prompt saying "press E to Escape". As is now, some people prefer to not use DS right away.
1 -
Yes, let's make it free so Killers can never take advantage of a mess-up and Survivors never have to worry about failing it. It just becomes an free 'get off the shoulder now' perk with 0 fail states. 🙄
2 -
Should survivors have to complete a difficult skill check to use Deliverance? Or For The People? Or when picking up a pallet with Any Means Necessary? Etc. The skill check for DS is just an old, outdated relic from 2016, no other survivor perk requires you to hit a difficult skill check.
If you equip a perk and the situation occurs where it activates, it should be guaranteed to work. Like every other perk. External factors like lag shouldn't play a part (yet they currently do).
6 -
The difference being; DS literally saves you from a hook state and stuns the killer so he can't immediately re-grab you.
The value of DS means it needs a skillcheck that can be failed so you don't get away 100% of the time.
3 -
Yeah, I wouldn't mind the skill check being removed. Why add a difficult skill check to a very situational anti-tunnel perk is beyond me. I can understand why for it's previous versions, but not it's current one. Missing the skill check means you're not getting tunneled, apparently.
8 -
Why add a difficult skill check to a very situational anti-tunnel perk is beyond me.
Because you failed to hide.
Your team failed to take protection hits.
Your team failed to heal you or otherwise help you.
And you think you get a free 'No hook for you'? for all that?
3 -
If we make it have no skill check maybe we can reduce the requirements on killer perks too...
I personally dont think it's a hard thing to hit but honestly this game has alot of limitations for no reasons
1 -
Honestly, the skill check makes the perk feel more satisfying. They really need to fix skill check lag in general though.
1 -
Yes, nothing is more annoying as killer for the last survivor to get out because they saved their DS until endgame.
0 -
It sounds less like an issue with DS and more like consoles need better optimization.
2 -
Optimization would solve many problems, but why ask for that when you can demand buffs to an already meta perk.
3 -
Well, suddenly the performance issues increase with every patch. I used to play this game easily, but since the last patch, not anymore. My game freezes for a time, especially if the killer appears or some "special event" happens. And if such things increase, then more skill checks are missed. And thats why.
1 -
That's definitely true. It's one of the reasons I've become such a pessimist about this game. It's hard to believe the promised optimization is coming when it gets worse, not better, with each patch. The Resident Evil chapter tanked performance to an insane degree, and to see PS5 and new Xbox users also complain that their performance isn't absolutely perfect... well, that's not encouraging.
The point of DS is to have a way to save yourself when your team fails. If my team didn't farm me off the hook, stealth away instead of take aggro, refuse to heal me, and all out just make me goddamn miserable attempting to play survivor, I wouldn't even be considering running it. It's a one-time use perk with specific requirements to activate, and doing damn near anything in the game deactivates it.
And why is part of the requirement for getting use out of DS to not experience performance issue in a game riddled with performance issues? I have no control over that. DS becomes an RNG perk for a lot of us. "Skill" is not involved when there are fps issues, frame drops, and stuttering. Performance issues like that can't be outskilled.
BHVR doesn't even advertise this as being a team game. Right on the Steam page, it says: "Survive Together… Or Not - Survivors can either cooperate with the others or be selfish." DS goes towards the not surviving together part. If BHVR actually expects random teammates to give a crap about each other and not get each other killed, the game needs to be redesigned.
4 -
They really shouldn't have.
Those poor Switch players...
2 -
Yeah I'm not trying to be mean to console players, they've been treated like garbage by BHVR but that's no reason to buff DS. Maybe they should fix optimisation instead.

So your telling me if the skill check lags it's your fault? Gosh darn your so entitled
Respectfully tho
