Pharmacy discussion

Continuing a series of threads on the least used perks according to Nightlight, next up is Quentin's perk Pharmacy (0.27% usage)

Pharmacy - When injured, Pharmacy activates. While active:

Unlocking chests is 40/60/80% faster.

The hearing distance for noises from unlocking chests are reduced by 8 meters.

Pharmacy guarantees an Emergency Med-kit upon completing the interaction.

This is pretty straight forward, the perk lets you open a chest to get a nice medkit. You open the chest more quickly and more quietly but honestly those are pretty minor benefits, the main draw to the perk is clearly that you are guaranteed a good medkit out of the search.

So on the upside, it's not like the perk isn't giving you a tangible benefit, the medkit you get out of it is a good one and you even shave a few seconds off the chest opening time getting it. Some downsides though are

  • You can simply bring a medkit at the start of the match and unless you use it up or lose it you won't need a second one. And because the medkit can be rarer and include add-ons you're starting off with a better version probably than the base green kit with no add-ons you get from the Pharmacy.
  • Unless you pair this with Plunderer's Instinct you might have a little trouble sometimes finding a chest depending on the situation. There's always a chest in the basement, of course, but poking around in the basement might be a bit risky if the killer realizes you're down there so that's a trade off. It's not that hard necessarily to find a chest but it's not guaranteed. And of course if you do pair this with Plunderer's that's fine but now you're spending two perks to do this which is kind of a heavy investment.
  • You have to already be injured for this perk to work. So you can't, for example, be healthy and then preemptively go get yourself a new medkit to replace one you already used.
  • Finally Circle of Healing probably cuts into the number of people interested in bringing Pharmacy since it's probably the better healing perk of the two overall.

I don't think Pharmacy really needs a huge buff, it seems like if you build around it then you can have some fun use out of it (e.g. Plunderer's plus Pharmacy plus Open-Handed plus a perk that helps you find injured survivors for instance and now you're the DbD EMT. 🙂) But I could see maybe buffing it slightly more just to give it a little broader appeal. One buff that might help is to drop the precondition that you have to be injured for the perk to work. That makes the perk a little more flexible in letting you get the medkit ahead of time of when you actually need it immediately.

Pharmacy is a victim of BHVR not understanding why people use perks. Before the great rework, Pharmacy used to let you get its effects any time you want. Their logic was that by making this change, Pharmacy is now better then before because it can now give survivors mulitple health kits. In practice, it is rather worthless. Against hit and run killers, it does not give enough heals to counter them, while against killers that down survivors, you can just have the person who unhooked you heal you. The change is a nerf because it goes against efficient play. Instead of how it was before, where you could use Pharmacy early on to give a free med kit to anyone who needed it, now it only is rather wortheless when compared to say CoH.

Basically in other words youre saying un nerf it, cuz it was that change that made it lose its value

I am pretty sure pharmacy would not become OP even if it outright lost the condition to be injured and that's it.

revert nerf essentially. I only use this perk when i am doing chest challenges in archives for faster chest opening speed. I don't really use it for med-kit. plundere's instinct+pharmacy is good for those archives challenges.

The perk would be much better if it gave purple med-kit out of the chest then I might use it over circle of healing.

True that, although i think 100% chance for purple is a bit OP, mabye like 75% chance for green and 25% chance for purple

if it had aura reading on chests it'd be great. or maybe it can spawn more chests like hoarder otherwise i think the rework they did was great it's not a one time perk like it used to be and survivors already search chests for a medkit when they're injured and have no other alternatives.

it'll still be an underused perk tho as long as coh/medkits/inner strength exist.
