What is Dead By Daylight anymore

Like seriously, at this point i don't even know what this game is supposed to be. In my opinion, this game is for all kinds of players, who just wanna have fun and mess around in a "horror" game. Like, it is supposed to be something where you mess around with your friends, or just chill in a solo queue match.

But nowadays, there are so many phrases for "toxic" behaviour. This game is built on toxicity, and without toxicity, this isn't Dead by Daylight. The game is not about "winning" anymore, but rather making sure that the other side loses. People have the mentality that "i don't care winning anymore, as long as the other side is losing, i'm satisfied".

We got so many wonderful communites in this game, it is one of the most diverse games in all aspects, with many wholesome moments, yet this game can turn this community into the most toxic community i've ever been a part of.

In terms of playstyles, for killers it's about tunnelling, camping and full anti-gen perks. The competetive mindset is burned into many minds (In a assymetrical horror game, can you believe it?). There are hundreds of perks in this game, yet only 2% of them are used. Let's face it, it does not matter anymore what BHVR adds to this game to satisfy the community. If it does not let you win, it doesn't matter. All these events, and fun little shenanigans does not matter, and are not appreciated to the majority, because it doesn't gain you an advantage.

And i would also like to address the behaviour of survivors. Literally half of the games i join in solo queue, the first person that goes down instantly disconnects, or gives up on hook. Nowadays, if i see one survivor go down, i get anxious looking at their icon, waiting to see that disconnect-icon. The same goes for waiting at the exit gates so that "the killer can see me leave", just to rub it in. Make sure that the killer knows i'm leaving right infront of them, and that i won, while i t-bag.

Another unpopular opinion, is that i see so many streamers, who complain or comment about playstyle / perks, yet they do the same thing themselves. Complain about the other side using the strongest perks and addons, but they do the exact same, and the whole chat agrees because they don't have any opinion, and just copies their favourite streamer.

So tell me, how does such a wholesome community, turn into such aggressive individuals, with such a competetive mind, in a game based on HORROR. This is not a first-person shooter game, or a battle royale, but an assymetrical horror game.

I love this game, and it's one of my favourites, but it's such a shame that people are so competetive, entitled, and toxic, when this game isn't even supposed to be competetive.

I can only speak for myself:

After reaching Iridecent 1 every month, the games are far more chill, because I dont care anymore of losing pips.

This is the best time of the month, doing crazy non-meta stuff like Trail of Tormund and Dragons Grip or some nice little Claustrophobia play. Yesterday, I was in the basement as snowman together with 4 other snowmans with some nice little dancing action.

I love to get 2m BP at every 13th, but till Iri 1 is back, its stressful. After that, I am just using "wish-perks" 🤣 and try to get as many chases and hooks as possible. Its really chill after the possibility of losing a pip is gone tbh.

I feel like it comes in waves of it being fun and very unfun on either side. I stopped playing SoloQ, because of the amount of DC's, or being left to die on 1st hook, after running the killer for 2 gens, so yea, fun :)

As killer, I almost never struggled to get at least a 3K, and would usually let the 4th survivor get hatch or open the gate, but nowadays, all I'm countering as killer are either:

    • 2 survivors with toolboxes with BNPs AND Prove Thyself, and the other 2 bringing 2 medkits and still having CoH.
    • Or 2 survivors with medkits and CoH and 2 flashlights with Prove Thyself.

And if it's not CoH, it's Adrenaline with medkits and Syringe, and OTR.

I'm not complaining about the perks by themselves. Going against those builds +/-2 games in a row is fine, but if every lobby you're facing brings that? Then yea, you're kinda forced to bring gen-slowdowns, and might have to tunnel. If you're a killer that needs to set up a bit at the beginning of the game.. yea good luck with 2 PtS and toolboxes.

I get what you're saying 100%. But for people who are already at Iridescent 1, and don't need to sweat anymore to reach a certain rank, why are they still going full tryhard. This is for both survivor and killer, if you had the worst match ever, (no escapes for any survivors, or no kills as killer), you won't lose any pips, because you're already at Iridescent 1. So, why not just have fun, instead of having the same competetive mind, since there is nothing greater to achieve at that point.

And i agree 100% that medkits, and healing is annoying as hell. I never play with items in my games, but whenever i do, it's just boring. If i bring a green medkit with 16 extra charges, and 15% healing bonus, i win my matches a lot more, but i find it extremely boring having the "I gotta win" mindset, and find it a lot more fun when you have to manneuver around the map while injured, finding out how to unhook a survivor without being spotted, and play it smartly, rather than healing up instantly in 5 seconds and having no problems. Even though i play survivor mostly, i think perks like CoH and self-care should be removed entirely from the game, since they are a huge waste of time for solo players, but extremely effective on SWF's. And green medkits should definitely get nerfed aswell.

I think about this a lot and I think this is rooted in one of the biggest problem this game has maybe even the biggest - new player retention

So new survivors are always losing in the first dare I say at least 20-30 hours in the game, which may sound like nothing to people here like me with at least 2-3k hours but its actually a lenght of an average full single player game, like people who are new won't get attached and will just get frustrated and give up

For killer it's super easy at the beginning but then it puts you against 4 man sweaty squads really quickly after you are done stomping babies and you start to lose and losing as killer feels awful and way worse than survivor

and all of this is without even mentioning perks, huge grind, bunch of maps, strats, killer powers everything that a new player has to learn

and all of this ties to what you wrote - the game was supossed to be chill and hide and seek fun horror experience but all people who are left are mostly people who are veterans and know the game inside out and the since everyone knows how to play everyone plays the best they can and the game turns into this tryhard mess

fellow Nurse mains going for some streaks with starstruck and midwitch offering against solos and 4 man squads bringing bnps and insta heals and maps offering against m1 killers while in reality this game was never meant to be that, that's why when it first started we had insta repair gens insta moris and etc.

balance did not exist because it was supossed to be goofy little game, but now we are in this strange limbo where Bhvr tries to appeal to the new players but also tries to balance perks and everything for "high level" and it looks super messy and no one is actually happy

Vote with your wallets. Only devs can change things. If the game makes you feel bad and is unfun , just move on to singleplayer or something else. Something I am about to do. And it might be a good thing. I am not going to miss griefed and damaged matches and heavy verbal abuse.

This is spot on. A lot of new players who pick the game up now won't stick around because it's such a bad experience for them, on either side. I've been playing since mid 2019, and I used to look forward to it, but now I can't even be bothered to turn it on.

I know a lot of people advocated for this before it came out, but personally, I fully believe mmr has made this game a lot less fun.

I know what you mean. I used to care a lot about ranks on survivor before, as killer not so much because I played it less. But since SoloQ went to hell, I started enjoying killer a heck of a lot more. I still don't care much about ranks on either side, but the rudeness in EGC makes it less fun.

Although I've noticed that as Ghostface I have in general WAY more fun than with any other killer, regardless of how strong they are. GF is the right amount of serious and meme-y. which makes him the perfect killer to have fun with. But the game really could use some changes overall, it would be nice if survivors just had a secondary objective to escape, aside from just doing gens.

Sorry, but what did I just read?

I'm honestly not sure whether you are defending toxic behavior or condemning it.

That said - yeah, it's not perfect. But the meta has never been more varied, and - while some perks need a buff/nerfs reverted (Self Care needs to be unnerfed, Thana needs something between what it is now and what it was then) but yeah.
