Is there any reason to be optimistic about the future of DbD?

I don't want to talk about what's wrong with DbD in this thread. (I could go on and on about that.)

I only have optimism about DBD atm to be honest. Yes a lot of chapters come out a bit messy but besides that there's only been massive improvements especially in the past 2 years. Even the big perk change this year while creating not the best meta I'll admit at least shows it something they're willing to do.

The fact that the game's in a pretty good spot and has only been getting better recently would be a pretty solid reason to be optimistic, I'd think.
I'd struggle to even come up with reasons to be pessimistic. We've had a few sloppy chapter releases, but that's nothing new. A few annoying business decisions too, that's more of a legitimate issue. Still, hardly outweighs all the good that's come recently.

I was a lot more hopeful after the big perk meta shakeup but my optimism from that is slowly draining. I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, BHVR might finally be ready to make some changes and make them at a speed that wasn't a tortoise with three broken legs but that hope seems to have been misguided.
The game is still going strong and I'll likely keep playing until the game itself goes down but it's incredibly disappointing that after they did the huge shakeup, they still seem absolutely petrified to do any kind of changes, even when about 97% of the forum agrees that something is a problem.

I used to have no optimism at all but it seems like BHVR's at least trying to listen a bit more to the community, so I'm actually looking forward to seeing what happens in the future. Of course, there are still many problems that need addressing, but I have faith! (Hopefully I don't end up regretting my words...lol)

For the longest time it was hard to be optimistic about this game as it took 6 long years to get some much needed quality of life improvements: bots, meta shake up, grind reduction, action indicators, etc. It's nice to see BHVR finally listening to its player base, but I hope this is just the start.
I truly hope that we see new game modes in the future, because it's one and only game mode has grown very long in the tooth. Imagine playing only deathmatch in call of duty for 6 years. Needless to say it would get really boring! But there's always been something special about DBD that keeps players coming back, and BHVR needs to capitalize on that and offer more incentives to keep players around. After 6 years new Killers and new survivors doesn't cut it anymore.

Not really. The devs have made some pretty bad mistakes in terms of gameplay design, and they're not backing down from it. They're steering the game towards frustration with a lot of the changes they go for.

Looking back at all the things that has happend this year: 2022.
- a better Wiggle Mechanic
- Pinhead voice lines.
- WE GOT SADAKO and whatever his name was.
- New Haddonfield
- Legion addon pass and their new TR.
- Ghostface addon pass and non washing machine TR.
- The Dredge and Haddie, a Killer with locker tp. Amazing.
- Garden of Pallets.
- Map changes added to McMillian.
- The Huge Summer Perk Pass.
- Overall Killer buff and Generator Nerf.
- Old Dead Hard died.
- Bloodweb Grind was reduced SIGNIFICANTLY.
- Matchmaking Incentive.
- THEN WE GOT WESKER. Ada and Rebecca are hot too I guess. I prefer Sheva.
- RPD got reworked.
- Streamer privacy options.
- Flashlight changes
- Spooky Knight and Old Man Vitto.
- Custom Game Bots.
There is no way I can stay negative about this.

Just this year, we've had a ton of great stuff added, the meta is more varied than it's ever been perk wise, some really fun map reworks, frigging anonymous mode (what a boon this was), Legion rework, Ghosty rework...
I've been playing this game since 2019 (I think?), and basically - while there are a few things I miss (especially visually), the game has never been better.

I only see about maybe 4 of those as net-positive changes. Most of them are lateral, expected or net-negative changes, #10 being the worst by far. Thinking about the changes made in 2022 make me pessimistic about DbD's future.
None of you have provided me any reason to be optimistic.
Thankfully I do still have 1 reason.
I do still occasionally have fun playing DbD.
I wish I had more reason to be optimistic, but I guess it is enough.

What was wrong with the perk pass? I don't think I've ever seen this many perks be widely used on either killer or survivor.
Hell, Dead Hard saw 50-80% pick rates for years. That was a positive change at the very least.
The rest of those are all pretty positive. Especially the killer reworks. Why would these be a downgrade?

Nerfing Dead Hard was the only good thing about that patch, even though it didn't go far enough as it is still the strongest exhaustion perk. Almost all of the other perk changes were far overtuned. I thought the game would come out more balanced after 6.1.0, but I don't think it did.
Destroying Pop & Ruin (perks that can earned for free) and promoting Overcharge & Eruption (perks paywalled behind licensed characters) to the top of the killer meta still screams money grab to me to this day.

Soudns really overly negative about this, if your value sto evaluating what has happened is bad then your evaluation will be bad too. You are expecting too much or expecting the wrong things.
I have many ideas myself for bHVR, but I cant prove anyone of them would be actually good, bHVR employees are the one who have to prove to their fellow employees that an idea for the game is a good idea. You can only reasonably expect changes that can be can go though that process.
That leaves the Question with you, What did you expect and why? Cause that is the real reason for your pessimism.

I wish they would just do that what a lot of the mobas are doing: look at what are the most played options, in this case like the top 5 perks of each side, and just nerf them in some way and buff the 5 least played perks of both sides. Do this every 2 weeks and thus keep the game and meta ever fresh, ever evolving. Sometimes they might mess up, in that case give us a hot fix and revert the buffs/debuffs, but for the most part just stick with it.
Peoples favorite perks might eventually get nerfed, but they can find something new that would be then strong that they had never ever considerd.

Not every change has to be some grand sweeping epic. Bump a percent up or down a bit and see how it works out. If it doesn't work out, bump it back up or down.
At the very least, you'd think PBT would just be constantly open with them farting around with perks and whatnot..
Maybe the code is so Spaghetti'ed that they can't touch stuff like that. If they make Self Care healing go up by 10%, it makes The Clown's yellow bottles stop working *shrug*

I don't really know. The survey gave me hope of the possibility that they are considering new modes or new mechanics. These are things that could revitalize the game. Unfortunately I am a realist and can see these thing costing new money while also taking away time from making the game we love actually balanced, fair, and fun.

For real. Tweaking should be done constantly and regularly and hotfixes can always revert something. Just get in there and finetune the stuff without fear of breaking it (unless the code would really break down ;P).

Considering your responses in this thread, I doubt you are actually looking for any reason and you'd rather hear other people agree with you.
However, I am relatively hopeful. The game is certainly in a much better spot than it was two years ago. The BP Grind has been reduced. Perks are easier to obtain. Borrowed Time is base-kit, which definitely helps Solo Q. The meta did change. DH was finally nerfed. Wesker released, who is a strong AND fun Killer who feels pretty fair (if too common) to play against. They tried something very ambitious with Knight. MMR is functionally back to the old Rank System.
All this to say I'm relatively hopeful that they'll add 60 FPS to Xbox One, PS4 and low-end PC's soon

Overcharge is from Doctor, AFAIK. And Doctor isn't paywalled.
Unless you mean Eruption? In which case...sure? But it's balance - it all comes around again.
Still curious as to which ones were the positives - and by exclusion, the negatives? Because I can't see a single negative on that list.
Some stuff was just massive QOL, like the wiggle changes. Dredge is a fantastic killer, and Legion/Ghostface reworks were pretty decent. Anon mode helps streamers a ton.

To be fair, a few people have linked unambiguously good changes. Others made lists. You responded by going 'nah, those were all terrible' without elaborating.
It definitely looks like you're looking for reasons to hate the game, not like it.

I'm more curious if anyone knows anything more than I do about what's coming in 2023 besides what's on the roadmap, icons and lunar event. I've heard rumors the next chapter is licensed but it's just a rumor.

I don't think the game is gonna die anytime soon, but I have no high expectations from this company anymore. Not a single new game mode in 6 years, making questionable maps and can't even rework the bad ones properly, haddonfield is still #########, just a boring hold W abuse windows simulator, with very little pallets in the middle. I don't see things changing that much in the next year or so, considering how long it takes for them to make relevant patches.

Survivor action icons (can’t be mentioned enough as it was requested by the community heavily) as well as more anti cheat measures (including getting feedback from your reports iirc), apparently it’s more than a rumour since M Cote hinted heavily at a licensed chapter before the anniversary but not in 2022 or something along the lines (haven’t seen the interview myself), they have stated they want to expand custom matches to also have killer bots, Twins are still supposed to get a rework/update, we don’t know anything about 2023 roadmap but I think last years anniversary stream actually was great as it set reasonable expectations for what’s to come which wasn’t the case in the ones before, the very recent survey also kinda hints at good stuff to come (possible Square and Eyrie balance reworks, new game mode(s), QoL features from mobile)

Apart from these two absolute banger useless comments there's no icon or commination for survivors and nothing additional in the game to make it challenging. The devs wanted 60+% win rate for killers and I suspect its getting closer to 70% 4K's. Theres nothing new added to the game in the sense that it gives another objective or second chance. We had 4-5m games at the mid part of the year. Good luck being optimistic devs are very deaf.

I feel like the next midchapter and chapter are a huge tipping point for the game and will swing the future either way. Forged in Fog was a flop to say the least, and the 6.1 midchapter turned out to be extremely divisive. It's hard for me to say optimistic/pessimistic.

Those are not all killer buffs, though?
The better wiggle mechanic is a survivor mechanic exclusively, and the new Haddonfield, the huge summer perk pass, bloodweb grind reduction, and RPD rework changes benefit both survivor and killer equally. Not to mention the thing that weren't on that list, like the basekit BT and several good new perks that released this year for the survivor side.
I also didn't say the game was perfectly balanced, I said it's in a good spot and it's only been improving. Both of those things can be true with imbalances still present.

They will not introduce lootboxes.
Games in general seem to be slowly moving away from lootboxes in favor of battle passes (which we already have) due to legal concerns, as a number of regions have instituted partial or complete bans on lootboxes. If they introduced them, they'd be pushed out of several markets either now or in the near future.
Theoretically they have the option to implement them on a regional basis, but seeing how much very basic stuff they struggle with (chat censoring ##### to mind) I really doubt they could implement this without breaking a whole bunch of unrelated stuff.

I still like the game.
As long as you don´t play high MMR (which i don´t) it is quite fine.
They won´t abandon anything as long as it makes as much money as now.
The new wiggle is crap - we already have enough skillchecks. I am happy the old still works - even if i know not forever sadly.

Well i think there's a lot of cool licenses they could bring but in terms of game health, no. The fact they are branching out into other games and some well known developers have left is not a good sign. Also just the fact that some BS in this game has existed since 2016 and still hasn't changed goes to show that it's unlikely that some of that stuff is ever gonna change.

I'm optimistic, but to be fair I'm new as well.
But it feels to me like BHVR has started to adress issues that have been complained about for years. So they do take feedback seriously, though a little bit late. I trust that they will commit to small changes here and there to slowly balance things towards a healthier game.
What keeps me optimistic about DbD is not the devs however. I've been matched with lots of really cool teammates and opponents lately and it feels great chatting with positive players. Hopefully people keep chilling in the near future !

Honestly I've been having a hard time having fun in the game lately. This game NEEDS a QoL improvement to the bloodweb, like a button so you can spend all your BPs in one go, instead of having to click and hold for like an hour a million times.
The meta is completely stagnant. And I find kinda hilarious how they "revamped" it by making it basically the same, with the exception being that killers favor tunneling much more, like almost all the time, and that's just unbearable.
Also, it seems like it's rather hard to pip up. I got a game I had 10k on every category except for surviving, that I had 8k and got +0. So yeah, ######### is that?

What would you like to see announced for DbD that would make you optimistic about it?

- Baseline BT.
- Off the Record.
- Baseline BT further buffed.
- Status icons incoming.
- Slugging changes announced.
- Hyperfocus (solid perk)
- Fogwise (insane perk)
- Potential Energy (utterly broken perk in SWF)
- Garden of Joy - probably the most absurdly safe map in the game, including old Haddonfield.
- Dark sense buffed, actually worth using now.
- Deja Vu buffed (uh...people are sleeping on this monster of a perk).
- Distortion buffed, now sees usage even at top MMRs.
- Hope buffed.
- Lucky Break buffed, now pretty crazy if you use it right.
- Lightweight buffed.
- No One Left Behind Buffed.
- Overzealous buffed out the wazoo, another perk people are sleeping on.
- Sole Survivor buffed.
I could go on, but this is already a skyscraper of text.
I've been playing for...almost 3 years now, by my reckoning.
This game is so much better than when I started it's almost unrecognizable.
I mean, I think back to when I started, how busted maps were, how stupid keys and moris were, how every match was against almost literally the same perks, killer or survivor, how almost every map had spots where you could be unhittable or unpickup-able...man.
Then things got better.
After that, MMR made the game far more balanced than ranks were, some really great map reworks, a whole ton of new perks and killers...DbD is still far from perfect, but it's steadily improving.
More like 5 steps forward, two steps sideways, one step back.
