Should "Exposed" Be Renamed?
I see a common mistake between new players where they assume "Exposed" means "The Killer can see me now", because when they hear/see "Exposed" nothing about it has any form of urgency nor does it suggest "I can be one shot even when healthy" to new players.
Someone might say "Just read the user manual in main menu, it's there for a reason," but let's think realistic here for a moment. Most people are not going to read through it, most people just want to hope into a match and play the game, they do not want to do research.
I think it would be a good idea to rename the debuff into something that new players can immediately understand, I was thinking "Vulnerable" would be a good replacement, since it would have some sort of urgency to it, but I do not feel like it would convey "Oi, youre one shot" to new players...
So what would be a good replacement?

I agree. Don’t know any suitable word except for ‚vulnerable‘ though..
‚defenseless‘ doesn’t have a nice sound either.
‘fragile‘?
1 -
endangerned.
In German it says "Gefährdet", which is the exact translation to "endangered". Not sure why it's called Exposed.
3 -
"Vulnerable" is the right word in my opinion
9 -
I agree with Gamall, vulnerable is the right word
4 -
How about we call it Hunted
0 -
Vulnerable might be a bit too long...
Does anyone here have a word that means "to make something fragile"? Because that would work perfectly.
Enfeebled works somewhat but it's as long as Vulnerable and people might not know what enfeebled means...

I don't think it would be a big deal if the game had a better tutorial but unfortunately it doesn't.
1 -
I agree, "exposed" is a poor identifier of the situation. "Vulnerable" seems like it would be a better description.
2 -
I have to agree with Vulnerable...

Yeah, the suggestions here are just as vague as Exposed. I would suggest not changing it, newbies can easily use the wiki to learn what exposed means.
1 -
What do you mean by "too long"? 🧐
0 -
Vulnerable or febrile world best
0 -
I don’t think Vulnerable is as vague. Exposed seems very much like your aura is revealed and not that you are instant down with one hit. At least the current icon is fitting and helpful and doesn’t need change..
1 -
Exposed to me means "susceptible" or "Vulnerable" so I think its perfectly fine
one of the definitions of exposed is even "...in a vulnerable position or situation"
+plus its been here so long why change it
4 -
because it’s one if it’s definitions. And the other one heavily implies something different in the context of this game while the word vulnerable is pretty much unambiguous.
change for newer players, as OP explained.
3 -
I'd just call it One Shot but that would be deemed too violent for kids...apparently.
0 -
Survivors are alway vulnerable. Besides, survivors will only make the mistake once.

New players can just look up the status-effects, as there are many of them. And if they don't, they'll learn it from trial and error.
There are so many perks and add-ons for every single killer the devs would otherwise need to adjust. Which would be a massive waste of time, when people can simply look at the killer's power/perks/add-ons and learn it immediately after said trail 🤷🏻
3 -
"Death Door", "Bloody Banquet, "Reapered", "Bells tolling".
1 -
Endangered perhaps, but no. Exposed has been the term used since the games inception so should probably be left alone.

No

Exposed for me means to be unprotected or at the mercy of.
It is perfectly concise in this context.
1 -
Or an English dictionary.
0 -
exposed
/ɪkˈspəʊzd,ɛkˈspəʊzd/
adjective
- not covered or hidden; visible.
- "the venue featured beautiful hardwood floors and exposed brick walls"
oh. I got it all wrong. So it actually is revealing me to the killer and not making me one shot. Damn.
(yes i know there are more definitions - but that is the entire problem OP was talkin about)
2 -
The essence of the words remains the same. I'm amazed it's even subject to discussion.
Players who really care about the use of the word may take up to look it up and, one can dream, learn about etymology.
1 -
I didn’t even know we had hazardous weather conditions in DbD. Thanks for clarification. So it’s aura reveal and (more) damage from weather.
or maybe you can just admit it’s not entirely unambiguous in the context of this game where aura reading/revealing is very prominent.
I already know about the other meaning of exposed and how it is fitting here. But, let’s not pretend that many people knew that from the beginning, or that it is self explanatory. Or that the naming of a status condition should be a learning lesson for etymology.
1 -
They can complain about their lack of understanding to their parents and teachers.
The word in this context is perfect.
edit: made reply unambiguous.
P.S. that comment about the weather doesn't help your case.

They?
we are not (only) talking about children/students here. At all.
and the naming should be self explanatory, and not be explained to you by an outside source.
the fact that many people already agree with OP should tell you it’s not „perfect“.
2 -
Usually adults have been students and even children before (it's not unheard of). Note I've not been a child (nor a student) since way back sometime during the last century and I still can complain to my parents.
The meaning is self-explanatory. But if we have to take care of the average idiot instead of making him pause and think "maybe I've never really understood the actual meaning of that word" where do we stop? We don't, so we won't.
"Look, everyone who do not understand that word agrees" is not really an argument.

Thanks for calling me indirectly an idiot i guess? Well it wasn’t that indirect..
and yeah you are right everyone has or had parents at some point. Still weird to assume they would ask them about a word from a videogame which meaning they already know just because it might have another meaning?
and exposed might actually mean having your aura revealed. It is very much in line with the definition.
edit: well at this point I think you are the one not really understanding the fact that the word has multiple meanings which can be interpreted with the given game mechanics in different ways.. so..

I'd go with vulnerable. Expised does sound like a locating effect rather than a one hit down.

Eh, i agree vulnerable would have been a more fitting name but it's not exactly the most pressing of changes that could be made
All it takes is one time getting downed from healthy to get what the meaning is. One hit out of the thousands you're going to get while playing this game isn't exactly a steep learning curve
And it's not like exposed doesn't fit at all
I mean look at the definition of vulnerable
"the quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally."
1 -
Incapacitated
Haemorrhage
It’s the spelling that’ll trip people up more, I think.
1 -
I was thinking the same thing about the weather haha. Dangerous weather in dbd!
And yeah, all of my friends who come play always think exposed means they aura is revealed. They never relate it to being able to be downed in one hit unless they look it up on the wiki or ask.
1 -
The etymology of Exposed strongly suggest it was originally intended as “reveal what’s hidden” so that’s not helping your argument at all. The first line is the contemporary definition, which also doesn’t work for DbD since the basic state of a survivor is that they’re defenseless.
0 -
Well I am afraid I gotta tell you someone would call all your friends average idiots 😉
I mean, I am fully on @Sonzaishinai side as it’s easy to get the meaning after being affected/hit once with it. And it’s not a pressing issue nor is there a direct need at all. And at this point it is kinda part of DbD. There are good reasons to leave it as is.

I don't think length really matter, especially when we have "haemorrhage".
0 -
"early 15c., "to leave without shelter or defense"
You'll have to give a reference for "reveal what's hidden"
edit: ...
If you mean the even earlier sense, then it's simply irrelevant here. In a few centuries, when a new language will use the English meaning of "exposed", nobody in his right mind will look at the path of the meaning to find the current one. Only to understand the underlying idea that led to it.
As in, today, the current definition, which goes back to : the word accurately describes the survivor states.

Well if you can't or won't read some basic terms about the game you're playing it's on you not on the terms used
0 -
hmm… something that makes you feel weak and vulnerable. Without your normal armor. Naked even…
Oh! I know! How about exposed?

In the spanish translation, Exposed status was always "Vulnerable".
