Should it be fun to play against the killer or terrifying.

I am sorry but this discussion needs to happen. Now I don't know if some of you have noticed this but dead by daylight originally started as a horror game. The way the game changed over the years is absolutely horrifying for a symmetrical design.

Here's the thing. Maybe it's just me but I really thought this was a horror game at some point. It seems scary enough when I was actually learning to play Survivor. Especially, when I was facing against new Killers When I first started playing the game. Next thing I know I go to YouTube and see all these a bully killer compilations...

Not going to lie but in my opinion it shouldn't be fun to go against the killer it should be terrifying. I know some were going to say that can be the same thing and yes I hope that's the case. You should be terrified by the end you should feel extremely accomplished if you actually manage to survive. Not rolling your eyes and checking your Twitter feed because of course you survived because the killer had no meat on their bones to really put up a fight.

Yes I'm probably saying something that a lot of other people have been saying but seriously I rather actually be a little bit worried about whether I'm going to survive versus okay is this type of killer so I'm know I'm going to survive.

I'm sorry but this game is not a symmetrical and the Power Balance will never be the same but the game is still fun I suppose none the less.

The game only started as a horror game since everyone was new. If the survivors were as experienced as nowadays, it would have been an even worse situation than now (infinites etc)

But lets look at the current situation. Survivors can tbagg, click their flashlights and point at you while being chased by a (terrifying) killer. Why can they do that? Because they know they are perfectly save in their loops, in other horror games you are always in danger, but not in DBD. Safe zones are spread all over the map, so there really is no need to be scared. Nurse is the only killer that actually is scary in good hands. Why is that?

Thats because looping doesnt work against her and because you are actually nowhere safe. The nurse could jump right to you in the next second if she sees you and thats why nurse is the only killer that makes DBD feel like a horror game.

Unfortunately the devs have stated that they dont want every killer to be viable.....

Ever played against Monitor & Abuse + Scratched Mirror + Boyfriend Memo Myers? That’s terrifying to go against! And fun to play. Back on topic though, it’s hard to really change the Killers this late into the game to be ‘terrifying’ rather than fun to go against due to the controversy and outrage that would come out from Survivor mains if Killers didn’t have some downsides and could be outplayed. I also wouldn’t want the Devs to be harassed from something like this...If you look at posts about Decisive Strike’s rework and the Dev’s profiles on here, you’ll see that a lot of Survivors have called them out and acted rudely towards them for changing one perk. I think the only way to truly make a Killer terrifying is by how you play them, such as Nurse or Myers! With the right things, they can give you a heart attack if you aren’t expecting it, but this post may bring somethings up in the future for maybe new Killer ideas and reworks, hopefully!

I play a game to have fun.

Doesn't mean I can't get scared while doing so

It should be fun. This is a video game, if I don't find it fun to play, then I don't play it. Simple as that.

The mistake you are making is that you are mixing fun with terrifying and try to place them on opposite sides. When I was playing Outlast, I got terrified but had fun too.

You can't make a game scary forever, after playing a couple of times, you lose that feeling. When I am playing against nurses, I am not scared, terrified or horrified, I find it to be difficult, and that's it.

I know that many people want this game to be a horror game but without jumpscares, people will get used to that and it will become a normal game. This is inevitable.

If you have somewhat 200+ hours in this game nothing will ever be terrifying again. They seem to put a lot of focus on lore stuff but they forget the most important part: the atmosphere.

The only things that can jumpscare you in this game:

    • Random traps
    • Random pig/ew1 myers ambush
    • Insidious campers

If you're just a little bit aware of your surroundings, you can easily avoid those things.

    @Delfador

Okay let me rephrase because I think my wording might have set the wrong tone. Yes I want the game to be fun but I also want it to be terrifying...

Has sad as it may be. A game will stop becoming terrifying after a certain amount of hours. This one is no exception but what I mean by terrifying is that the killers actually have a presence. They don't feel like a pushover all the damn time. I don't want to go against the nurse and Michael and have that be the only two killers that are actually terrifying. Every killer should be has equally terrifying or better so...

A fun type of terrifying is Resident Evil 7. That's what I'm referring to when I use terrifying in my sentences. I want The Killers to feel and look threatening. Not like some worthless pushover that is scared of a square chunk of wood.

Also fun is an opinionated word but I see your points

Sometimes this game is scary and Sometimes it's fun. It all dependa how killer is gonna play.

Both. They should present a threat to keep you on your toes but not so overpowering that they feel cheap.

Nowadays I hardly ever play survivor, I just prefer killer. I think one problem is SWF, playing with friends removes the threat of the killer almost completely, unless the killer is really good of course. I consider myself a pretty decent killer, I get 4k consistently, so some might think that I as a killer am terrifying, but there are many killers who just don't know what they are doing, those killers aren't scary at all and it's not even fun to play against them, in my opinion, because they don't pose any kind of threat. If the devs manage to bring solo survivors as close to SWF as possible and start to balance killers based on that we would see many more terrifying killers

Both in theory but after a good amount of hours in leans more towards fun.

It's a game so it has to be fun and as a horror concept it also has to be scary.

The problem with the scare factor though is over time anything that is scary starts to become less so and nothing will change that, it is what it is.

When you first started playing it was scary, almost everyone will admit that, you never wanted to be seen as a survivor as you didn't yet have the map and mechanic knowledge to get away as easily so you were afraid if being caught.

The only scary things in the game right now are jump scares imo, These hapoen more with Myers and the hag but can with other killers also when trying to mind game and instead running into them.

They could make dying less rewarding so your are fearful of the killers but being fearful is different from being scared.

It's a catch 22 scenario as making something less rewarding in this game for either side with such the huge grind that it is also has the effect of making it also less fun.

    Dude are you real?

I didn't say I didn't have fun, what I said was entirely different. Try to give a good answer next time that is actually related to what I have written.

And you give friday the 13th example? lol

    Start watching 16.10

Yeah Jason is such a huge 'threat'

Survivors should not be safe near the killer. Survivors should never want to be the obsession (will be lessened by ds change but still...)

While terror, fear, horror etc can fdade with time, being around the killer should be a tense situation the survivor cant sleepwalk through.

Well there can be simple fixes to make the game scarier. start off by fixing Wraith's / Billy's derp face. make stun sounds by killers sound angry and aggresive and not "ouchie!". Make the game dark again for survivors but keep it as-is for killers. add more ambiance and make the realms look like the entity meant for it to scare people

THere should be a feeling of hopelessness against any killer. So terrifying. With a side of fun, where skill and awareness mean something.

Well, I have fun being scared.

So is the question "should it be scary, or easy" ?

You kidding me? I get hella scared. Probably not in the same way a person would when play games like Outlast or Resident Evil, but I get scared nonetheless.

If either option excludes the other option, naturally it should be fun to face a Killer.

If it's not fun at all, then it's a bad videogame.

Of course, we all know these 2 options go well together in many games and some Killers in this game too.

Should be fun AND terrifying...what it should NOT be is a complete joke to go against a Killer

  • HatCreature
    HatCreature Member Posts: 3,298

It should be both, I still get scared playing as Survivor. I always get scared going against stealth Killers but when I'm going against all other Killers it's just tense, when I go against Legion it's just annoying because my team sucks ass and can't get their ######### together and do Gens while I keep him/her distracted.

This should both be scary and fun, but it's hard to keep the scary vibe because there are several Core game features that inevitably make it fun and easy to laugh at. These issues CAN be fixed, it will just take time and the will to go through with it.

The killers that are the most "terrifying" are nurse for the constant threat and no safe zones. Spirit for the fear of thinking you lost her only to have her appear right next to you, and hag for the fear of traps.

Meyers peekaboo around a corner and grab you off a gen trick jump scares the crap out of me every time and I have a ton of hours playing. Spirits poof I'm in your face does too. Doctor making me scream every 3 seconds is just really annoying though, lol

Like I tell all the dead survivors that complain at the aftergame chat that they didn't have fun because I have tunneled and or camped them: "This is a horror game, you should be terrified that if I catch you, you could get camped or tunneled" HAHAHA.

I can't say they are terrified of me, but they sure get pissed when I camp them. I think I have been called everything imaginable. I laugh. That is reward in itself. I don't always camp. If I do you probably a) taunted me or b) went from pallet to pallet with a flashlight.

This is a horror game. If being scared doesn't amuse you, then you've bought the wrong game.
