Unable to change portraits after new patch edit: nevermind, icon names were just changed
edit: Rewriting this post because it turns out the icon names were simply changed and the icons have to be updated, this is a massive pain to do manually but the nightlight developer is making a script that does it automatically, this post isn't really necessary as feedback anymore, but I guess it's still useful to anyone seeking information about why their custom portraits aren't working

I'm guessing this is impossible on console?

Thank God. The portraits are still a TERRIBLE change, but at least my mini heart attack when I logged on and saw the character portraits still there was unwarranted.
If any BHVR employees are reading this, PLEASE REVERT THIS CHANGE!!!

I still don't understand why they would do that tho

"Please rewrite your code so I can mess it up easier."
This isn't a game feature. If you want to tamper with the game files that's on your head.

Wait, they have to mess around with the game files to do this? Won't the anti-cheat pounce on them? Aren't they screwed if banned? I seem to remember reading in these forums that the devs can't do squat if banned...

you won't get banned for custom icons, I have had custom icons for over 5 years

There's no messing with the code to do this. It's an image override folder that BHVR intentionally left in the game files so people can add custom icons. In fact, they've supported modding for YEARS as long as it doesn't provide any advantages, and if there are, then it stays out of Live servers.
Easy Anti Cheat only looks through the pak files, which is COMPLETELY different from icon modding in most cases. Icon mods are safe because it has nothing to do with the pak files, and BHVR has been fine with it because it doesn't provide any advantages to the player. It's really just extra customization for PC players.
And no, you can't get banned for that. There's been zero known cases of people getting banned for this, as again, it has nothing to do with the anti-cheat. The only way you can get banned for it is if you're editing pak files to change the icons that are hard-coded into the files.
