Do you guys play your own game?
Dear Behaviour,
Throughout the 7 years DBD and our community has been through how come you guys don't play your own game to see what we go through or see what's buggy or balancing for both roles, if you do play your own game then would you try your best to balance the game for both roles? Or even add new game modes like casual and ranked modes, etc? Me and other people in the community have tons of ideas to make the game fun instead of competition, I hope you guys read this 😁🥺

Imagine working on a game 40 hours a week or more and then being expected to play it in your off time. Would you sign up for that?
Honestly though, give BHVR a break. The game isn't perfectly balanced, but that is an impossible task to begin with, and is made infinitely more difficult with the constant new content releases. BHVR by no means has a perfect track record, but keep in mind the number of massive meta-sweeping changes they've delivered just over the past year and show some respect.
I've been playing this game since 2016 and, minor gripes aside, it's in the best state ever.
The game is in a constant state of improvement. Tell BHVR about your current problems and wait for things to get (even) better

Wait for things to get better.... yeah. Took them 7 years to add a search bar, 1 year to change 1 digit for mori from 1 hook to 2. Sure they do eventually improve the game, but it takes them unacceptably long to add any QoL changes the game needs.

I always found that such a ignorant statement.
Hate to say it but developing a game does in fact not involve playing casual matches and having fun.
It's spending hours searching through a code to find ways to fix a bug. Most of their time is probably spend on making sure that the next chapter functions.
People who say that devs should play their own game are more often then not people who play it for 3-4+ hours a day. You're bassically asking them to take a second non-paying job. These are people with a life.
If you feel like things are changing too slow and think that the solution is that the devs should spend more time playing their game rather then actually working on it then you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer

I don't know. I think it's a fair statement. Along with saying Devs should listen to their community. Just look what happened with HyperScape and the wizard game.
Not saying anything else. I don't think it's that much bad to say.
1 -
Atleast give some valid facts and ideas if you think that way.

Why do people always say it 'took them 7 years' to add a search bar? Was this something people have been asking for since day one?
0 -
I do expect my mechanic to test my car after fixing it.
9 -
Probably they've been asking for a while. Definitely for over a year now (I think I remember this complaint since I started playing the game which is close to a year now). It's hard to navigate so many perks, this should have been a non-issue from the start. They take a very long time to implement QoLs in general. Even the HUD should have been a feature 3 years ago at least and to this day you still cannot communicate in game and BHVR is the biggest game around of its kind.

I don't think people would like the results if the devs played the game a lot just for fun. Whatever circumstances they tended to run in the most in their games would get the attention. The game varies not just by geography and MMR, but each individual has elements that they are better or worse at in the game.
Also, things like ranked and casual mode ideas have been discussed. The implication that just because they haven't done what you think should happen means they don't play the game is a bad presumption. Just look around the forums, people disagree on lots of game elements, the devs are aware of ranked and casual mode ideas, they just don't think they are good ideas.
The search bar is actually a good example of why they should listen to the community more than themselves. The devs don't need a search bar. They've spent time designing, discussing, programming, and fixing each of the perks. I imagine the devs could find whatever perk they are looking for very easily, its the players who need a search bar.
That's an interesting comparisons, but three points
1: I only expect my mechanic to the test the car, it will likely be a small portion of the time they spend working on it.
2: I would never expect them to test it outside their working hours.
3: Test driving the car is very rarely down by the head mechanic.
I think BHVR would meet all comparisons.

When i do some some code, i do for sure test it before i hand it to others, even when the code i do is just simple batch code.
Perhaps testing/playing the game should be a part of the work? - in the working hours.
I would not expect them to do so in their free time.
It might also be good for "team building" that they get to have fun together, in their work hours.

I love posts like these that are like "the community has such good ideas you should listen to them" and then the ideas are like make survivors die on first hook or make killers 105%.
I literally have seen threads asking for community ideas and 99% of the suggestions are unbalanced jokes. Players are great at finding problems in a game and absolutely garbage at coming up with solutions.

yes. they do. probably not as much as we do, since they already spend their day at work with the game.
it's more of a "this should have been in the game at launch" kind of thing. it was much easier to navigate stuff when we had half the amount of perks so a search bar would be nice but it was fine without it.
for instance, I've been wanting better menu navigation for console since I started playing. because it would be so much nicer and faster to just press the arrow keys instead of moving that circle around...
so I could say "we been asking it for 5-6 years" depending on when it launched on console... but it's actually "this should have been here on launch"

The "play your own game" comes up so often - we work on this game for 40 hrs a week, we do playtest but we're testing various things and it's definitely not the same when something goes Live and is played by hundreds of thousand of people, of course things are more likely to be found then.
I wouldn't expect everyone to play the game in their free time - although some of us do, I have 6k hours for example and have played since launch.
We listen to feedback - there have been many changes that have been implemented from feedback, that feedback is collected from many sources as well. Not every piece of feedback can be implemented either (nor should it), for every person that wants x there's an equal number of people that want y. The Team has to decide what to implement what to change, and yes data will play a big part in that as well. Community sentiment is of course important but sometimes changes need to be made for the health of the game that might affect that sentiment - that's where it becomes difficult.
Making a game has so many different parts and so many different departments and each has their own objective to achieve, collating all that and prioritising what can / can't be done and is a big job in itself.

Can I ask if fan made reworks or changes to existing perks are also sometimes considered? For example, if the idea is good, does it go anywhere? (Example: Someone posts idea of how to rework Twins or Fire Up perk, if the idea is liked, does it then go to desing team, etc.)

yes they do
what's buggy
Bugs are not easy to fix
balancing for both roles
lol, this community knows less about balancing than BHVR, no parroting someone's opinion doesn't mean you do
if you do play your own game then would you try your best to balance
they are and have been for a while
Or even add new game modes like casual and ranked modes, etc?
yes lets split the community for a gamemode thats totally arent going to end in stomp fest right?
Me and other people in the community have tons of ideas to make the game fun instead of competition, I hope you guys read this
terrible ideas based on the rest of your post, you didnt even post your ideas

The thing is for how old DBD is, some things should have been addressed ages ago. It's unheard of in 2023 for a multiplayer game to not have any in game communication features while going through a bunch of metas that require communication and co-ordination to deal with. It's stupid that you buy a survivor's perk on the Shrine and you still have to buy the survivor for a full price instead of their price reducing by 2k when Iri shards are incredibly hard to come by. That's a QoL right there that makes everyone's experience between because someone buying with shards means they won't be buying that survivor/killer with real money. I can understand for this feature not be added to licensed character, but to OG characters this is unnecessary grinding, especially for survivors who are glorified cosmetics.
And I would assume these are things that are a lot easier to solve than in game bugs and game balance.
Name me a big game in 2023 that lacks in game communication features. You can't even communicate with consoles if you're on PC in pregame chat. (correct me if I'm wrong though).
I don't have much insight when it comes to consoles, but people have been asking for keyboard and mouse support for a long time as well. I play with a controller on PC and I can tell me latency is higher when I'm working on gens. So it's probably higher in general with a controller. I have to time my skillchecks differently if I'm on controller vs keyboard. Arguably this is a rather complex issue, no doubt. But console players are a big chunk of the playerbase.

Of course they play their game. The real question is, are they good at their game...?
0 -
don't really think you require communication. would help but not required.
you buy the perks so you DON'T need to buy the character. it cuts the cost to 6k shards. or even less if all you want is 1 or 2 perks.
it needs to be an issue to be solved. don't think the shrine is an issue. don't think not getting a discount because you got the perk is an issue.
the slow grind for shards is something I would call an issue.
pokemon? yugioh master duel? there is no in-game chat on console.
we have. Heard we are but I don't have a number.
0 -
Do you team up with people in Pokemon and Yu-gI-oh?
0 -
with pokemon yes, sometimes. with yugioh there are events that do, not usually, but it's really annoying to not be able to set up alternate formats without finding a discord somewhere

So I think there is a misunderstanding: when we're talking about whether the devs play the game, no one literally means the devs never actually enter the game. During work I'm sure they look at it, as Mandy mentions, but that's a very different type of playing. What we're talking about is whether they go home and in their free time are playing the game like the rest of us.

Remember that one time Mathieu Cote got stomped by old instablind flashlights on the Asian server during an interview?
Remember how flashlights got nerfed into the floor and Hag got buffed like a week later?
Remember how he genuinely believed both of those things were totally fine until he got forced to play the game for once in his life?
Yeah, they don't play their own game unless they absolutely cannot wriggle out of it.
8 -
What im talking about is not just entering the game to test a new feature, but to enter the game in the work hours as a part of work, for example at fridays after dinner breaks, to play for a couple of hours.

They need a team of like 5 people whos job it is to just play the game. On the public MMR we play, and give feedback. They dont even need to be devs or anything.
Someone at BHVR needs to experience the mess that is MMR and be able to tell a dev its trash.
0 -
I will address this. But the two things are not connected at all - you are all aware of our pipeline of work, making changes like that quickly is not something we would or even could do to get it through all the various steps.
3 -
I just think any dev would play the game to some capacity. Whether it's just play testing or actually enjoyment. I mean a good way to test something is to see it in action right?

I hate threads like this with a passion.
The narrow minded focus on the ad hominem completely undermines the critical point that will be completely overlooked because everyone is just mindlessly spamming that developers usually don't play their game.
Meanwhile, the real problem, the fact that the people who actually DO play the game and understand the balancing issues, are completely ignored with the blanket statement of "every voice is as important as the other". I'm sorry, but if Magnus Carlsen has to say something about chess, I will actually listen to him as opposed to some rando 1300 ELO player.
It's so infuriating and disappointing that BHVR is sitting atop an absolute goldmine of stats and data and they just...do nothing with it, because they must release that 2-3 Feng skins every 3 months or people won't open up their wallets.
Meanwhile the map designs are beyond horrible and every lesson that should have been learned like 2-3 years ago are just completely forgotten.
The problem isn't that the devs don't PLAY their own game. The problem is that the devs don't UNDERSTAND their own game.
And people whiteknighting for them isn't going to get you free bloodpoints folks.

Alrighty, I appreciate and respect everyone's opinion about my question and statements, I read them all and I fully understand it now, thank you!! 😁

The problem is what exactly you are asking the expert about. Bobby Fischer grew bored with chess, but the amount of time he put into the game is not reflective of what most people will experience even if they play the game their entire lives. Likewise, strategies that work in professional athletics are not always the best fit for high school teams.
This is especially true of DbD were those playing 4 person SWFs/comp level are playing under a totally different game style then the majority of players.

I honestly think for the amount there is to keep track of in this game, the development team do a generally excellent job.
They're wrong about flashlights. They screw up on perks now and again. But nothing's perfect.
On the whole I actually think this game is in exceptional shape compared to most PVP games and I honestly find the most tiring thing about the game is the online community being so negative.

I just hope 2 killer mode and ST to come back with new chapter. In meantime I play some texas chainsaw as it has multiple killer mode.

Of course many of them play the game. But they work on it like we work at our jobs every day. You can't expect anyone to be invested in the things they work on in their free time as well. No matter how much they love their job.
Seeing posts like this, I can honestly understand why they don't show us how they play the game. That would end in a disaster. Our expectations would be to see some kind of god level players when in reality the devs are probably only average to good at the game. Which is fine. But it would lead to a lot of harassment.
I have 2.3k hours in this game by now and I consider myself to be a fairly average player. The people I play with sometimes have only couple hundred hours or they might even have up to 10k (highest I've ever seen personally) hours. And as much as we all like to brag about how good we are at the game, chances are that 80% of us are just average with very few exceptions of people at the bottom and top.
BHVR have made questionable decisions and changes to the game. Like the Sadako rework, the Hillbilly nerfs, Blight still existing in his current form etc. But they have the data. They have to make the decisions and more often than not I am glad they don't just listen to everything someone says here on the forum.
They did a commendable job keeping this game alive for 7 years and reading through the forum it sounds like the game would die any day now. But the truth is that it won't. Because DBD still reigns supreme. And TCM will not change that. It might be a good contender for a while but it will not dethrone DBD and it will not be around for long if the TCM devs try to rival DBD.

I can answer that
No they do not, otherwise they would not have approved of MFT

I don't think so some of us play solo q for hours, they don't know what it's like to endure all the bs. Average play session is annoying as hell. New sadako with slug builds, skull merchant, 5 blight/wesker in a row, boring facecamp killer every few games, legion/plague with 4 slowdowns, hard tunneling meta...but can't complain about anything because it's vAliD StrAtegiEs
I hope tcm game steal some players and force them to improve, it looks bad but maybe it could compete for a while
