Survivor update - 1st person generator repairs?
Hi all,
So I have been thinking for a while - as I am sure many people have for years - that most of the entertainment playing as a survivor comes from the chases and the thrill of potentially escaping, having to use your chosen perks to the best of your ability and developing varying load-outs to mix it up every so often. But how about that one particular element of the game....generator repairs...
This is a part of the game whereby players invest quite a significant amount of time, just as much as being chased arguably (maybe depending on your play style). But more and more people attempt to be part of the chase as opposed to doing generators purely due to the lack of entertainment that comes from gen repairs. Fantastic developments have gone ahead with adding variety to the game in terms of perks, characters and maps e.t.c, but as mentioned, players spend a lot of time sitting on generators too. So that begs the question, how can this element of the game be a little spicier.....or a lot spicier?
Suggestion:
I keep returning back to the same idea, each time I brainstorm for different suggestive ideas...
Bringing 1st person (just like playing killer) to the survivor only when performing the generator repair action.
As you press repair, the camera style transitions from the initial 3rd to 1st, providing players with perhaps a much more intense, exciting and more thrilling experience.
How? When preparing a generator, the player's vision is significantly restricted, as the camera angle (the eyes of the survivor) is concentrated and almost fixated on the generator alone, providing little room or inability to consistently search around the area seeking any sign of the killers attempt to interrupt the repair or chase you. You may be able to look from left to right to check your peripheral but that's it.
Or...
Perhaps by activating the generator repair function, and 1st person activates also, the survivor may be completely restricted from sight of their surroundings, as repairing the generator means the character has to, in a sense, place their heads under the protective shielding of the generator in order to access the wiring. In this scenario, the survivors hearing may also be impeded, meaning the heartbeat (signifying the killers approach) is significantly harder to hear or identify, again adding the suspense and thrill of repairing the generator. As a result, the survivor must stop preparing the generator in order to take a quick check on the surrounding area.
Maintaining the skill checks could still be an option in this case, at least additional excitement can be found from a new take/style on repairing generators.
A change in viewing (camera style - 1st person)
Sight restriction (unable to check the surrounding area as effectively when performing the action)
Auditry disorientation (heartbeat reduced when performing the action)
I realise that such a drastic change in a major element of the game can not be implemented over night....of course not. But I really do believe, from a personal level, that if this were to be introduced in the future, it would do wonders for your survivor players
Food for thought.

I think having a the best idea would be to treat first person Survivor as a Special Tome challenge or an Offering.
it would not be hard to bHVR to do really and well as a time challenge it would be fine lol.

Ghostface would love this change...

Great post! I agree that main part of being survivor (gen repair) is veeeery boring and needs to be changed.
I like the idea of repairing to be more immersive and dangerous by changing view to 1st person mode. Having ability to stop reparing and look around by holding particular key would be awesome. Fits to DBD policy.
And because repairing becomes more dangerous, it should become more rewarding aswell. Maybe separate generator repair progress into 2-3 sections. Once the section is completed it can no longer be regressed below that.

Another idea how to make repairing more rewarding is actually boosting their hearing capability to be more precise. As people hear better when they close their eyes and focus.

Honestly this just sounds like a hefty nerf, not something that would make the game more exciting.
Also this would mean solo survivors would barely have any idea of what's going on anymore because they wouldn't be able to look for auras.
Finally, I can't personally imagine holding M1 being any more fun because my camera is locked in place and I can't even distract myself by looking around.

It's not fun. It's pure nerf. Horrible idea. Gen grabs would be very regular and easy thing - with no real counter (outside callouts in swf) and a lot of frustration. This is borderline as stupid as having gun (or some other kill killer mechanics) in game.

Myers and Pig too, even if to a lesser degree.

I totally appreciate that. I guess it's more my attempt to resurge the horror element to the game. What was once quite prominent, to now just a game of cat and mouse - which I do love.. I love the chases, but just missing that element of horror.
Sounds stupid, but I've always liked looking at the game with a little sense of realism. If you were the survivor, you'd make most of hiding in bushes for example and touching the generator when the area is safe blah blah blah. But that won't happen as people love the chase too much. So I feel this change to generator repairs will automatically adjust the horror element to the game. But as you said, people won't like the "nerf" over the resurgence of horror. Especially as people want to farm blood points from being chased.
Maybe this could be a game mode people can choose if they so desire the challenge...
Anyway, I appreciate your feedback 👍🏻

I love this idea, this game needs a little more of a horror feel.

Oh, I like this! This is spicy, like that killer challenge that spawns a (brown I think) glyph right next to their starting position and communing with that glyph debuffs them in various ways (remember when you got this tinted screens and swaying movements that sadly made a lot of players sick? It was quite fun if you werent that badly affected by it).
This could be a new survivor glyph: "escape the trial while The Entity warps your perception of the world in frighting and unnatural ways."

as if soloQ wasn't bad enough already

Its just a glyph challenge ... can't be worse then the "Tough Stuff" unbroken challenge we got right now.

IDK. I don't want any more "equip no mither and nothing else" kind of challenges any more. It ruins the game for 3 other players. This one would land exactly into that category. I think it's much better to have challenges that force you to try different playstyles (do sabotages, blind killer X times, try out stealth build, or whatever else). Just not a challenge that makes the other players wish they had bot instead of u.
Also - unbroken challenge is perfectly fine. It can be tough, but it does not require u to throw the game for your teammates (like u make it a little harder for them as u don't take hits/hooks for them, but still)
EDIT: typo

Terrible idea unless they make the gen repair minigame more interesting. Being forced to stare at a machine for 90 seconds would somehow make repairing gens even more boring. Besides, survivors really don't need a nerf right now.
