Do you remember that time you let yourself die so Bill could get the hatch, on Midwich, where he spent the next two minutes searching on the second floor?

He subverted your expectations.
In reality, Bill had a 1000 IQ plan. Looking on the first floor was just what you would expect him to do. So he kept looking on the second floor and planned to drop right on top of it. Possibly by breaking the ground right under his feet.
