I hope the fov slider comes soon
I'm not an impatient person, but considering it's been like 4 months since the fov slider announcement and the fact that the biggest workload related to it is reworking shadowborn I feel they are being way too slow with the amount of work this would entail.

something something backlog something something priorities

We were also told the FoV slider would happen ASAP.
Waiting this long doesn’t feel like ASAP.
7 -
Hopefully. So ready to have 4 perk slots for blight. Then I can run alch ring AND 4 slow down perks.
2 -
Idk if this is a "shadowborn shouldn't be a basekit thing because it arguably buffs blight despite it being a good idea for the motion-sick population" or what exactly this is meant to embody lol.
6 -
What exactly does it buff about blight?
0 -
Got you!!!
Filthy blight main!!!
1 -
Something about the better fov allowing him to see better after a rush and moving his screen when hes rushing.
2 -
Oh no!!! I didn’t mean to actually post that… I’m exposed for what I really am. Dx
It will buff all killers lol. Nobody should have to use shadowborn to be comfortable playing a role or killer.
edit - and I use the term “buff” VERY lightly.
2 -
Extremely marginally, it's mainly just a comfort perk.
1 -
Er... no?
Pretty sure when we were told about the FoV slider we were also specifically told that it won't be soon, it'll be closer to the end of the 'year', the 'year' being Anniversary to Anniversary, so could be as late as next May/June.
4 -
It makes all 'fast' killers more comfortable to play, because looking through a pair of binoculars while running at 30mph is very disorienting.
2 -
BHVR later said it will be “ASAP”
It’s been over a month since “ASAP” was declared.
3 -
FOV slider will be coming - I think most people underestimate the work involved, it's not a matter of making Shadowborn basekit - because there's different FOV's in between Shadowborn range and base FOV, that all have to be accounted for, built in, tested etc. So whilst it might seem like a simple process, it involves a lot more work.
15 -
Can BHVR announce what the FOV range will be, that the slider expected to have?
We're still have absolutely no idea if the max FOV is expected to be 102 (current Shadowborn), or 110, or 120, or anything in between.

I was told itll be the end of this year or early next year. but all I know is I can make a working fov slider in just a week in unreal engine lol it doesn't take a whole year

Why does adding in a basic feature that most games have on launch takes months of development time? 🤔
3 -
Really?
in an established live game, where it is very well known that the foundation of the game was not build with how massive it got in mind at all leading to ‚spaghetti code‘, many multiple new features, new content, reworked features are being worked on by plenty of people, and where FoV affects existing features (perks, flashlights, stalking)?
1 -
This isn't what they said when it was announced in June.
0 -
Which powers affect FoV?
There are a few perks that do.
0 -
The screenshot I posted is dated September 25th. It's been "ASAP" since September 25th.
0 -
So, what it's been a little over a month?
Honestly, not sure what you're expecting. This is BHVR, they do not move fast.
I'd say, realistically, you might be able to get it before 2024
5 -
For one, we all know BHVR time is a few months behind. That's barely a month ago, that's nothing.
Even if ASAP meant "the next update", we haven't had the next update yet!
Secondly, this is just a tweet. It was announced on stream at the anniversary, and we were given an ETA of towards the end of the year then.

I think most people understand that this will be a slider and not just shadowborn tier 3 on all killers. That said while reworking shadowborn to have a different effect with fov slider coming, removing fov aspects of monitor and abuse while keeping its other effect and having a slider with 16 different values between default and shadowborn tier 3 range would definitely take some time, 4 months is more than enough time to make that happen, so I don't think it's fair to say that after 4 months people are underestimating the time needed for this.

I remember how I had this conversation with a person who got motion sick without this perk and I actually argued against it, saying that such buffs to the whole roster didn't sit well with me. But I then agreed to play an evening with the perk equipped and I basically felt no advantage. It felt "nicer" to play and sometimes gave me fun "speed vibes", because the edges of the screen were passing by faster, but I could count the occasions, where I actually saw a survivor at the edge of my vision, on one hand, maybe even half.
At the end of that evening I had to agree that Shadowborn basically offered no tangible advantage and just made playing killer feel a bit nicer and smoother to me, but if it helped the motion sick people out there to actually enjoy the game without handycapping themselves, I am now 100% behind this.

I don't understand why the first release of this feature needs to be a fully functional slider, that can stop at every 1 degree increment.
BHVR could have just quickly given us a Shadowborn toggle in the options menu (and possibly remove the FoV stuff from the current perks, if they feel it's necessary). Then it would have been fine for BHVR to take whatever time it takes to create a real slider.
I'm expecting ASAP to mean it's actually happening somewhat soon to the announcement of "ASAP". Otherwise, ASAP shouldn't have been the word choice. In all of my entire life, every other time I've ever seen or heard ASAP, it means "it's happening very soon". It's never ever meant "maybe in a few months".
1 -
Everybody would just be quiet if all BHVR said is this
“the fov slider is coming in the upcoming chapter, stay tuned”.

DBD absolutely has its own dictionary.
"Soon" means something like 5-24 months
"ASAP" is about 2-5 months
2 -
Sure, "as soon as possible" includes:
Making the FoV setting in the first place.
Testing that it works as intended with the UI values provided.
Then...
Testing the FoV settings on Killer Powers that rely on FoV, for every major FoV setting.
Then....
Checking the Vault/Locker/LockerGrab/GenGrab/WindowFrontGrab/WindowBackGrab/Carry/Walk/Wipe/Miss/Hit/TerrainHit/Snuff/Hatch/Squash animations and all Power Animations for every Killer to check that their 1st person skeleton shows up correctly for each major FoV setting.
Then...
Do all that again on every cosmetic model with significant model changes.
Then...
Anything else I couldn't think of on the spot.
Which is probably 1000s of manual tests. + dialogue back and forth for issues found and resolution on major issues.

Is that implying that the entire time, between the FoV slider being announced, and September 25th when it was declared ASAP, that BHVR did 0% work on the FoV slider? As in literally didn't even start the FoV slider at all before September 25th?
And why on earth does it need to be 1000s of manual tests before we can see it? They could just run some tests, and throw it on the PTB, with a disclaimer that it's still a work in progress, so we could at least preview it.
Or, the first release could have just have been a Shadowborn toggle in the options menu, or maybe just 2 or 3 presets, and the fully functional FoV slider could have been created later. Or at least we could have gotten concept art, or some other details about the FoV slider, instead of just "it's not ready yet".

Hehe so are they the new valve?

It's likely that this isn't as high priority as a quarterly content update. Thus, it would not have many employees allocated to it. So, it's possible the QA (Excluding dev/designers that work on issues unearthed by this) is being done by only a few people who may have other more highly prioritized tasks that they jump between. This means it will be slow going, both in testing, and fitting in bug fixes across the timeline. So, we don't know how long they've been working on it, or how much has been worked on and when.
And this is the kind of feature that has a lot of testing for a relatively small code change, given that the camera is something that touches a lot of other gameplay functionality. It's also the kind of thing that can have a lot of emergent work required, if most models/code were made under the assumption of a fixed FoV.
The feature could be finished in a day but take several months to deal with its ripples.

Changing Shadowborn/MnA is probably the easiest thing about the work involved with the FoV change. (Depending on how they change Shadowborn, of course)
0 -
Valve? What's that mean?
0 -
Yea that’s all it is. Playing speedy killers especially is miserable without SB.

Survivor HUD update was announced June 2022 and implemented end of January 2023. So I'd estimate around Jan 2024, unless it turns out to be alot more complicated.
4 -
Who cares, it's just a killer's QoL right ? I mean, it's not a survivors issue that need to be implemented asap, it's just killers so...
Meanwhile let's add more "QoL" to survivors
0 -
Sorry that you think that way.
But that's not how it works, it's not decided on whether something affects survivors or killers, but the feature itself. There's more work that has to go into this than you possibly realise. Which is why we confirmed in the original AMA where we discussed this first that it's not something that we're able to put into the game immediately, these things take time, they take a lot of testing and as you might be aware, there's other content that's going into the game as well which also takes a large amount of testing and bandwidth from various other departments.
However much you would love things to be killer or survivor sided, sorry that's not the way it is.

Careful. You don't wanna hear everyone calling you a liar because you said it might come before 2024. You know how this community can get.
It would be nice though, if they told us a bit more about how it is coming along and when we might expect it the very earliest. Just so that we know not to go too crazy before that.
Could you tells us a bit more about what exactly it is that needs all that careful testing, or potential issues? Because, respectfully, from my (admittedly very uneducated) perspective, it seems rather simple. Add a FOV slider, that allows players to scale their own FOV in either fixed numbers or freely.
But of course I am not a programmer, so I cannot possibly see all the potential problems. I reckon many of us would be more understanding, if we had a better idea of what it is that actually needs to be tested so thoroughly.

To give an example, every map with every killer - bugs can occur that then need fixing. It's not as simple as with shadowborn which is a set fov - it's adjustable so all those adjustments need to be checked. Some killers also have a fov increase, Legion in Frenzy for example so it has to be worked into that as well.

They're referring to Valve Software, who has their own release date joke term within their communities called valve time.

Thank you. This definitely helps understanding of why a FOV slider is more complex than Shadowborn as a base kit mechanic.

whta hurts me is not how long it takes. but the reality of not knowing. a promise that is coming soon gets someone hopes up but then we stay waiting.i just hope that you didnt give us vague timelines and just said expect it next year instead of soon or things like that
0 -
To be fair, they did say to expect it next year and then got bugged about it nonstop and stated they will bring it asap (which still does not mean the very next update and should have been phrased better)
