Scratch marks aka primary way killers track survivors has been broken for a few patches
Like come on bhvr, fix this already. It seems every few patches scratch mark generation doesn't work quite right, and let me tell you regardless if I win or lose it's often unpleasant getting there either way because scratch marks often spawn like everyone has basekit lightweight, and if someone actually has lightweight, it's like a few lines spawn then stop, then spawn again.
Add to that the weird fog that varies in it's intensity across the maps and audio being all over the place, either too subdued or overly loud and you get a recipe for playing this game becoming an annoyance.
With many killers when you combine the overly loud chase music many have and scratch mark generation that just doesn't work as intended, it just doesn't feel good playing this game rn.
I want to p6 my Nancy, but honestly I plan to drop this game for a long time after, because the game constantly having such issues related to the core gameplay is so unappealingly amateurish. I would literally not recommend the game right now to anyone.

Not even a few patches. Feels like the last few years not to mention certain maps being able to hide them very well.

They definitely have changed a lot over the last 2 1/2 years. When I started playing scratch marks were very thick, intense, wide spread and pretty much impossible to miss (or at least it felt that way). I remember seeing scratch marks from halfway across the map at times. Now I'm happy, if I can follow them with the survivor right in front of me.
There is quite a significant delay between the survivor crossing a certain point and the scratch marks appearing, sometimes there won't be any scratch marks at all on that spot. It seems like they changed scratch marks to appear in patches instead of a trail. Also, scratch marks are nowhere near as intense as they used to. I know this might not be that much of an issue for some people, but I really struggle with this as it can lead to scratch marks having barely any contrast to the surroundings, which makes them blend in instead of stand out.
I can follow the flashy lights because I see them very well. But when that isn't the case, I always need a bit of time to sort through it all and notice slighter differences in color. So sometimes I do see them but it takes a moment to actually recognise them as scratch marks. Don't know, if this is a me problem but it's something that I had always trouble with.
Some months ago, I came back from a little break and I immediately had the problem, that I couldn't track scratch marks anymore. It got so bad, that I started fiddling with the color blindness settings (something I had never done before in any game I had played) but that didn't help much either, probably because I don't suffer any form of color blindness. The weird thing is, that scratch marks not only blend in on maps like Lery's with it's white walls but even on darker maps (worst for me is Badham). I also noticed that scratch marks don't look as thick as they used to. Just compare them. You'll see what I mean.
Predator doesn't help either, so that is not an option. The perk is downright detrimental in many cases because it makes scratch marks even harder to see from a distance and barely does anything when you're close because then you know where the survivor goes anyway.

Part of it is because of dedicated servers. The server now has to communicate the survivor's movement to you which causes a delay between the scratch marks appearing.

That explains a lot. I hadn't considered that. Now I feel 5% more like an idiot and only 95% like they messed up scratch marks. 😅

Yeah they've been really bizarre or outright incorrect lately. I'm often having to play the "bad scratch makes or are they cheating" mental game. But that might be a whole different can of worms, where cheating is frequent enough that we can't separate bugs from cheating.

scratch marks have been broken since like 2018 lol i dont think they were ever fixed

Very small part, if any. I started playing near the end of last year when dbd already moved to dedicated servers and they were actually trackable hence working as intended. Servers have nothing to do with the spread and color of the scratch marks. There is 1 second delay needed before scratch marks reach full brightness, but it has almost nothing to do with dedicated servers.

Let us change the color to what we want. I want them to be WHITE!! Allowing us to change the color would really help a lot on bright maps...

They fixed scratch marks for a few patches sometimes back.
Then they broke them again. Literally basekit lightweight on indoors map

Well, while I'd argue that I haven't noticed any issues with scratch marks or audio issues I will agree that this game has so many simple yet consistent issues that never get addressed or fixed and that either shows that the dev team's management is incompetent Or they need to fix the foundation of the game so they can fix the issues. I love the idea of this game but they need to strip it down and building it back up with all these bandaid fixes taken off so the game can be optimized and built Correctly.

That explains why when someone runs through a doorway on RPD I can never tell if they went left or right. Nightmare.

I've been playing for almost a year now, and even within that time, I feel like scratchmarks have become more inconsistent and harder to see. Something feels up with them and I don't know if it's lag, glitches, or shadow nerfs.
2 -
Yep, it's suffering when it happens.

I've noticed this too. I've just chalked it up to subtle cheating which is rampant, but it's definitely possible that it's yet another bug that has taken way too long to fix.
2 -
I thought it was just my poor vision, but if everyone else is having issues too. Eh its probably both.

Scratch marks near stairs and doorway in indoor maps are so janky.

Yeah scratch marks are bugged for months. There is fewer of them, I've checked some 2y old gameplay for comparison
On some maps like Alien map or Decimated borgo they're very hard to see because of the map lighting. Often you can't even notice them unless you're very close.
I mostly track people by blood and wounded sounds therefore I run sloppy butcher on almost every killer.
Good thing devs added Ultimate Weapon so at the moment it's not a big issue.

I have been playing since 2018 and I find that the scattering gets worse every year and more times than not it doesn't stick. The indoor maps are especially bad and it is hard to tell at the earliest whether it is a survivor cheat or a glitch.

Yeah, something is off. You used to be able to track scratch marks in any loop, but now this is not a thing

Suck it up like us survivors do everytime survivors get debuffed while also overpowering killers, this actually seems fair for once so if they change that I'm blaming you

When they fix this bug, feel free to place all the blame on me. Consider buffs/nerfs to killers/survivors as an attempt to make the game more fair to both sides. It just so happens that because there are 4 survivors vs 1 killer that it's that much easier to make things unfair for killer having 4 people being able to do something that feels unfair.
Try killer sometimes, maining a single role makes your opinions on balance irrelevant, and you'll either have to find an echo chamber (of survivor mains in this case), or endure justifiable remarks of being biased and not being taken seriously in general.
But yeah, in short prepare to suck it up when the bug is fixed (whenever that happens)

Historically, most of the busted and broken ######### has been on survivors side lol

lately survivor perks have been nerfed left and right dont come at me with this bs key board warrior

Which is why Lightweight and Lightfooted have been a part of my stealth builds for a while.

Scratch marks on any type of shortish grass are almost invisible.

It doesn't change the facts. Did you stop to maybe think the game was a little lopsided and thats why they are making changes?
