I won't blame Otzdarva if he leaves Dead by Daylight and as Fog Whisperer

To be fair, this could just boil down to human error and the dev just phrased their answer incorrectly. It’s only one/a few devs answering these after all and doesn’t reflect the one and only truth going forward.

priorities can change all the time, especially when community feedback is loud and clear on a topic

    Money rules.

This counts for Otzdarva as well.

The overall frustration around Base-Players is very (!) unverstandable. I mean, little things take ages to arrive, while DBDMobile is showing heavily how you could move on.

Little things like a return of OG Freddy with Adjustments is taking FOREVER and gets delayed till eternity, while small things like the HUD gets hyped... which isnt that big of a deal. Its nice, it should have been around sooner, but everything just TAKES FAR TOO LONG for the devs to do.

It feels (!!!!) like all that matters is pumping out new chapters for money, copy&paste. It feels like the biggest part is creating killers and cosmetics, while gameplay gets abandoned besides small things.

They need 6 months (!) to adjust a perk, like WHAT?

I don't think those are fair.

    • it would be weird it there wasn't an official way to communicate with them. be it by forum or reddit/steam page or whatever... there used to be forums for everything, I used to be active in the death battle one of all things... this is normal.
    • the ptb is as much for them as it is for us. it's how they find the bugs they otherwise wouldn't because of sample size. and let's be honest... currently underutilized. they could be testing so much stuff there all the time.
    • subjective. but they do come up with events, not gonna argue on the fun and creative qualities because that's just opinions. mine is that they have ups and downs...
    • that praise can only be given, if characters get left out in the first place.
    • and not on others. both of those sometimes the wrong choice.

and it's also shortsighted to just ignore the criticism because "good was also done".

I don't think he'll leave. He's built up his audience with dead by daylight content. I just think he needs to mix it up a little in terms of different games (which seems to be what hes doing) cause yeah he probs burnt out

Please feel free to tell what they have done to wrong this community that is a fact and not a opinion. Also if anything the devs mistake was listening to the community. Players don't know what they want and for every complaint 1 way you can find another going another way. And no just cause you feel something should be a way doesn't mean it's right.

    I dont ignore it.

I gave the devs a lot of critisism.

But just because some things are negative doesnt mean that everything is bad. Most players just focus purely on negativity. I try ot be optimistic. Life has tought me that being always pessimistic only leads to pain, anger and sorrow.

    We can be better.

I like Otz but I think his two seemingly big issues with the game are quite separate. On hand I agree with him that the AMA was highly disappointing and there are problems with the game that the devs continue to ignore. When someone asks if there’s any plans for survivors to see each others perks in the lobby, something to help solos out an awful lot, and the answer is it could take years… yeah, this is not good. However the base kit FOV slider and 3 gen solution are on the horizon so I think it’s unfair to say the devs aren’t listening. I think in the past maybe they haven’t but they definitely are doing so more now. It’s just they’re playing a lot of catch up from years of ignoring things.

Now on the other hand, I think Otz is suffering from Scott Jund syndrome; wanting slightly easier matches for his own sanity and for his streams. I would never claim to be at this level, but if you watch streamer content then you know one thing to be true; high MMR DBD is miserable and that is the level he is at. Add in challenges/streaks where he’s playing high MMR matches with weak killers and meme builds and it’s no surprise he’s burnt out. But then the issue is that’s on him- the game can’t be balanced around someone with over 15K hours wanting to complete difficult streaks at high MMR using low tier killers with Septic Touch and Insidious in their build.

He has been a lot more tilted recently than I’ve ever seen him before and has been overtly complaining about the new MMR system since the changes the last month. He’s definitely burnt out right now and needs to mix up his content. There are issues with the game yes, but he’s clearly not in the right frame of mind to be dedicating as much time to it right now.

    It’s also dbd mobile.

The platform has been out for a fraction of the time OG DBD has and yet there are so many things they have implemented that the community wants ranging from QOL to great skins/alternate moris and even a new game mode recently.

Naturally people would look at all this new stuff and ask themselves “Why doesn’t the OG game have all these? What are devs so busy with where even implementing QOL changes may take months if not years?” Sure the public may not be aware of the workflow that OG dbd has going on, but that is where PR has to come in to manage expectations and portray things in a better light.

The devs are all great people, but I think the PR in responding to questions could be handled better.

The comment that Otz talked about in his video regarding showing perks in the lobby definitely could have been phrased to something like “We have a lot lined up now but we’ll do our best to slot it in when we can!”

The reply acknowledging that nothing could be done about suiciding on hook sounded so … desolate. I could even sense that the dev replying had no idea how to resolve hook suicides and had no intention of trying. Even if that is the internal opinion of the dev team, it’s not something that should be acknowledged to the public. Once again it could have been PR-ed better.

As much as I get the point of the AMA is to be truthful as much as possible, the comments don’t just reflect the opinion of the devs but of the company itself. I’m not going to assume only one dev thinks that hook suicides can’t be fixed when I read the reply, I’m going to assume that BHVR as a whole is aware of hook suicides and acknowledges officially that it can’t be fixed.

The PR needs to be better.

I wouldn't blame him at all, either. Look at No0b3, arguably the biggest name in DBD, he quit years ago with only randomly showing up to post a vid or two every year or so. AngryPug is trying to not say adios, so he plays other games to subdue that tension and stress. Umbra, a well-known DBD streamer who mains Huntress is pushing herself to play only due to the fact that it's what primarily brings her income. Lots of other well-known streamers are becoming less and less active in DBD as well. Otz, Ayrun, skermz, and JRM are like the few very well-known players that are actively playing daily and creating content often together. People need breaks from this game, it's healthy, especially when balance isn't there.

I will say that the "years" thing rubbed me wrong as well, but at the same time... None of this is new.

I think, generally speaking, Otz really needs a break from the game, and many players with him. He's heralded as the DbD encyclopedia, but that's gotta eat at the man at some point. He's ultimately just a player with frustrations, just like the rest of us.

Familiarity breeds contempt, and all that. Proportionally, one can only be amazed how he doesn't loathe DbD at this point.

The AMA are always a joke. They just answer meme questions, give nothing answers, or just outright ignore good questions.

That said, I found this video pretty lame. They have changed perks that It's has found to be problematic.

He, like many players and streamers are just annoyed that MMR got tweaked and he doesn't get super easy matches on a regular basis.

I don't even dislike Otz, but just calling it how I see it. I still have fun playing, but this game definitely deserves criticism. I just found this to be a little over the top. BHVR is not acting any different (for better or for worse) than they have since Otz has been playing it. Now he's getting some tougher games and all of a sudden BHVR sucks? Lol, sure.

Dbd is unbrearable for ppl who dont play for a living, let alone you have Otz, who makes 50k a month to play dbd, and he is getting fed up with dbd. No amount of money should drive someone that insane like Otz does. I hope he moves on from dbd, just like other content creators are doing at this moment.

That is mind blowing. On their website, its 1300 now.

Just to give you an idea of how many employees that is.

    Bungie (destiny, halo )- 1100

Santa monic (God of war ) - 400

    Naughty dog ( TLOU, Uncharted ) - 400+

    From software ( elden ring, souls ) - 400

    Neverrealm ( mortal kombat ) - 250

    guerilla games ( horizon ) - 400

Yes its a live service game, but man thats a huge amount of employees. Their overhead must be insane. Lets underestimate and say every employee earns $20,000 a year. Thats $26 million a year just for wages, let alone licence costs, development costs, etc.

    Crazy.

The community really started turning on otz when he started playing games with hens and ayrun. Otz is a reasonable and smart person and now that he has seen what comp players are like and what they can do, he is starting to realize that tru3ta1ent is right about a lot of things and he has been starting to point some of these things out in a less whiny way.

And the minute a streamer or content creator starts being reasonable in DBD, for whatever reason they become super hated. The other big one Scott Jund has avoided it because he basically sees DBD as a party game, so he KNOWS that these things are true, but he doesn't care because its a "party game". I think it is a wrong take, but its why he has avoided the toxic community.

There is a very simple solution to survivors giving up. Remove the 4% mechanic, because it is dumb, remove the struggle mechanic, because it is dumb, and actively start banning people for afking, trolling, griefing, or "giving up". Every other team based multiplayer game is able to do this, why can't dbd?

There is a very simple solution to SWF vs Solo, many of them in fact.

    • Remove SWF.
    • Make them separate queues (ranked vs unranked) and balance the modes differently (I.E. shorter gens vs solo, and longer gens vs SWF, or maybe SWF run at 95% movement speed, or any number of possible changes).
    • Show killers who the SWF are so they can opt in/out of them before the game starts.
    • Show MMR to everyone of everyone in the lobby, so both sides know if they need to sweat or not (i might have a match of 1600s and know i can chill a bit, vs a match of 2.2ks where i know i need to bring strong stuff)
    • Give SWF a penalty for each member of the SWF (reverse prove thyself maybe?)

Several of these things are just numbers tweaks that could easily be worked out and tuned over time. But the simplest solution is to create separate queues.

only concerning part on AMA was bridge gap on soloq vs swf question. having an option to show your teammate your perk loadout should not take years. it should take 4 months-8 months.

  • Marc_go_solo
    Marc_go_solo Member Posts: 5,289

This I agree with, mostly. The problem with AMAs is that the amount of questions people can ask is dramatically reduced because of what the devs can actually answer. At the same time the devs know this also, so why do AMAs when the questions cannot be answered?

The updates are what they should be focusing on in regards to communication; asking people for opinions on aspects of the game, such as they are with the maps; putting forward opinions on future changes - that is how they would be best to communicate.

I think it's important to remember that the game was never built to support such features in the first place, which i think plays an important role into why some of the things talked about in the AMA would take longer to implement than one would expect.

    At least that's my guess.

  • baharuto48
    baharuto48 Member Posts: 123

Yeah I heard they started back filling players in matches to keep queue time short because people were complaining about long wait times. Yeah so low skill players have to get thrown in front of merciless killer players who focus on the "weak link" and then take the group down. It's really not fair for low skill players to go up against high skill players just because some people complain that the lines were long. And it's the same way for killer players but at least they get to stay in for the whole match.

  • tjt85

That's not a DBD problem in my opinion. That's a "I can't get off the content creation wheel because my engagement goes down, my money dries up and my bills won't get paid" problem.

That's the somewhat precarious life of a Youtuber / Twitch streamer. I hope branching out into different content is a success for him, because as much as I love DBD I'd still hate to be stuck playing this game every week of the year to earn a living. Obviously, it's their choice to stream and there are plenty of much worse ways to make money, but it does seem to have its fair share of downsides. As you say, it's healthy to take breaks from the game now and then, but if it's the reason why people watch you stream, what can you do?

  • baharuto48

BHVR doesn't need Otzdarva. BHVR passed a point where they are established, DBD is established. These forums seem to be turning into customer complaint lines. Welcome to DBD. BRING MONEY.

The problem is feedback is ignored here, as well. We had numerous people tell them that MFT was a problem during the PTB. All of it was disregarded and went live as is and then stayed a problem for half a year until they went, "Waaaait a minute....MFT is a problem...who knew!?!?" And fixed it.

So what exactly happened that its talked about so much right now? Its been like this for years and nobody cared about it. Is it jus because of Otz? Do people really needed someone like him telling them the obvious?

  • glitchboi
    glitchboi Member Posts: 6,023

When people recommend Otz to take a break from DBD don't forget that DBD is literally his career. When your audience watches you for one thing in particular it's really difficult to steer away from that thing if it's how you're going to get paid. I get the intention of telling him to take a break, but it's really easier said than done.

Otz is a great guy who is clearly burnt out of DBD, what he should really do is play the game a little less often and maybe focus on playing DBD to have fun with friends like KYF or SWF rather than focusing on a much more informative route or committing to kill streaks (which he loathes doing).

I love Otz for his personality, he's incredibly charming, very charismatic, and a wholesome figure in the DBD community. Without him I have no idea where DBD would be at.

The mobile version was coded from scratch by an entirely different team than BHVR. That's why they have different features than the PC/Console version.

I do wish they would recode the game. So many things could be added, like a match replay system, and bugs would likely be easier dealt with.

  • Crowman
    Crowman Member Posts: 9,511

Recoding the game isn't a simple task that can be churned out. It's going to take years for them to recode everything. But importantly, I'm pretty sure the dev team is already slowly working on recoding aspects of their code.

We've seen some innovation stuff with some recent killers. Xeno's underground map, Chucky's 3rd person camera, Singularity's bipod cameras. I doubt any of this stuff was possible for them years ago.

It just makes me think they are happy with solo survivors being stomped most times. So they are feeding kill-rates. Game is feeling balanced with this way.

At least we know they don't care about solo survivors, so we can just move on and not touch this role even more.

I don't think it's solely about the AMA. Him dropping his winstreak content, for example, I think has more to do with the recent MMR changes making his games a bit harder than anything the AMA gave. IMO, 50 winstreaks *shouldn't* be easy. Especially not at high MMR.

Having watched the video since my initial comment, I think it's a culmination of things that have built up and the AMA was just the breaking point. I guarantee burn out is at the base of it all. Someone mentioned above that he's becoming a "less whiny" Tru3, and honestly, one thing I empathise with both is that they're clearly burnt out but this is their job and how they make their damn good income and they don't want to give the latter up. They think changing the game will make them feel better, and revive their interest, but the fact is they'll still be burnt out at the end of the day.

They've said in the past it's too late to add a replay system in, it would had to been in the original coding apparently. One of the reasons why I'd love them to recode the game.

Xeno's tunnels look like they're based on Demo's portals. Chuck's pov and model likely came from Victor. I'd have to think about the various parts of Singularity to see where they came from, if not actually new. Don't play him anymore too poopy with a controller. I think they said it takes a year's time to do a killer.

There are alot players like me, not follow the hype of new chapters and instant buy everything on release. I dont have Chucky, and I dont have Alien / Ripley. I was gifted with Cage. So basically I play the same thing for half a year without anything new.

There should be something new to core game mechanic, like EGC. At least twice a year. Able to see teammates' perk and HUD is not even core game mechanic change, just improved QoL

    "true colors"

the sad fact is that your favorite content creator had to get mad about the devs before you got mad even though they've been like this since a long long long time. this is not the only AMA in which they give non-answers. in fact start from the first AMAs recorded with mathieu cote and not queen. there were far more lies and non-answers back then, just your fav content creators didnt comment on it too much. i remember one of the prominent excuses being "it's a small indie company" but not anymore for sure.

I have an idea about killing yourself on hook solution. You cannot use 4% in the first 2-3 minutes of the game. After 3 minutes, 1 attempt is given, after 4 -2 attempts and after 5 - 3 attempts (if you have Deliverance you can unhook yourself anytime). Or something like that, you can play around with the numbers. A survivor who quickly fell at the beginning of the match will not be able to kill himself

There is no fast wonder to make soloq more in line with swf.

But that's no excuse to give up.

Their response of "we find the issue with swf is more that friends cooperate than a lack of info" is correct, but it doesn't mean you don't do anything about it.

The devs do not have control over player attitudes and behaviours, they DO have control over the info that's available. Help bridge the gap in the ways you have the ability to do so!

You will never make swf equal to solo, but closing that gap by any amount will be an improvement.

No custom lobbys improvement and no new general perks for 'Beginners' , no solution for kill on first hook ( i mean they can just dont kill on hook them run to the killer again and die) easier bypass before a solution was even made, thats you guys worried about the future(No is because the streamer said it, Hive mind).

The perks loaouts would be nice thats true, but what i see from this comunity show the loadouts in lobby bad perks or no meta perks dodge and repeat and match gona take longer to start that finding one in first place.
