A hatch stand off is a scenario where neither side can progress the game without losing. This scenario still exists, e.g.:

  • the hatch is very far from exit gate and the killer cannot reach it in time after closing hatch. A survivor waiting at the gate for the killer to close hatch is guaranteed an escape
  • the gates are too far from each other to be patrolled, e.g. Lery's and Hawkins. Once the killer closes hatch, the survivor is practically guaranteed an escape as they can just wait for the killer to come and leave before opening the gate. By the time the killer returns, the gate is opened

In both of these scenarios, the survivor is guaranteed an escape if the killer closes the hatch. Therefore, the only winning option for the killer is to wait at the hatch until the survivor gives up, which is a hatch stand off.

If a survivor finds the hatch, they are given an escape. If the killer finds the hatch, they should be given the equivalent, which is a kill. Hatch disproportionately benefits survivors, and it is unfair that closing the hatch can put killers in a losing position.
