Casual vs competitive mode

The usual DC argument in another thread came up and it got me thinking. People keep referencing other game's DC policies, to which people bring up that THIS game only has 1 mode rather than a casual and competitive mode.

My question... how well do you think this game would ACTUALLY handle having 2 modes which...don't actually change anything other than one not monitoring MMR while the other has strict DC penalties? Would the casual mode really remain if it was known for the mode people go to for trolling and DCing once they got countered?

I feel like it would just get packed with survivors who never wanted to touch a gen in the first place wondering why the Billy who never wanted to bother with a chase is running laps around the map instead of running past their 3 head on teammates in lockers.

Thoughts?

I don't think it would work, to be honest.

Competitive would be a miserable experience few are really interested in. Casual would just be a mess between people who don't even want to touch the objective / people who want to win but without dealing with the extreme sweat of the competitive mode.

It just doesn't work. I stand by my opinion that DBD is not a competitive game, it never was and it never should be. It can be taken to the extreme on outside tournaments but that is the key word: outside.

MMR doesn't enable a competitive scenario, in my opinion, it is just a failed replacement for ranks.

I doubt casual mode would become that. If anything, competitive people would make their way back to casual mode pretty quick because if there's one thing competitive folk hate, it's going against people with the same energy. Competitive mode would probably become obsolete.

Comp mode would have to have good incentives to play it if you ask me from cool cosmetics or top rank being like 5 million bloodpoints or something

I just know for me... I very rarely play SWF. I'm either soloQ or killer. I wouldn't mind queueing up for the mode that makes me think my teammates are actually going to do what they're suppose to do rather than wasting time or DCing if they go down. Would be great if I could start a match knowing everyone has the goal of doing the objective and escaping. So yeah... sign me up for the "sweaty try hard mode" where all 5 players are going to stick around til they either die or the match is over.

Separate thought... maybe instead of a DC penalty timer, people who constantly DC just get matched with other people who constantly DC. Surely they all had legitimate emergency reasons and matches with 5 constant DCers will do just fine.

And most games that reach that stage like in your pic would indeed look like that, cuz if it went better for the survs the killer could just dc too in casual mode.

Stats (those that exclude dc) would probably be way more killer sided that current trends because more games would end to killer dc.

I wish a comp game mode could work, not because I so desperately want to sweat but just to know my teamates or my opponents are trying. I genuinely don't think it would last though, people aren't too good at the game and would eventually go back to norms to essentially smurf on people.

People really shouldn't associate sweating with trying to win. Atm survivors could freely cleanse 5 totems, open every chest and then meander around until their teamates were dead. The game struggles to work when grouping people with two completely different ideas of playing the game into one team. Survivors can lose out the gate because one person decides they aren't doing gens or trying to win and that feels just awful for every other teammate.

The last part you mentioned here only works if 4% is removed which it really should, dc penalties can stay where they are at I guess.

Yeah, I agree on the 4% thing. Unless someone has perks designated for it, it's VERY rarely attempted to actually try to get off hook. You'll have those ppl who might try it if they're about to hit stage 2 anyway, but it's generally just used to avoid a DC penalty.

I think it would create two bad modes. My general playstyle is I want to try, I want the survivors to try, but I also don't want to be so intense on the game that I scream at another survivor for opening a chest or running a non-meta build. But I also don't want the level where people can just DC at will.

A ranked mode would interest me more as killer than survivor, but I also think I'd get bored of the game overall. I'd play all out, learn roughly how good I actually am compared to others, and then probably move on. It would be a very different vibe than DbD as it exists with trying to fill out various archives and challenges.

I just know for me... I very rarely play SWF. I'm either soloQ or killer. I wouldn't mind queueing up for the mode that makes me think my teammates are actually going to do what they're suppose to do rather than wasting time or DCing if they go down.

I never play SWF, I sympathize with the idea, I just don't necessarily think it would actually work out that way. If you do manage to end being ranked pretty high, you could count on good teammates, but I don't think that would be true for the lower levels. There I think you'd just guarantee having sweaty killers.

Every now and then I might team up with someone who seems pretty chill just so I have someone to chat with, but that's about it. I just know right now... the DCing and hook suicides just feels like an epidemic. Would be nice to be able to filter that out of my lobbies. Let the DCers go into a game with the understanding that the other 4 ppl have the same exact energy, whether that's a "we don't take this serious at all" mode or just a DCers penalty box matchmaker.

I will always support a casual mode in dbd. The game is sometimes too competitive and sometimes too...casual. There is no way of determining if a match is going to be full of tryhards or full of memers. Yes, I know that could happen too with two separated gamemodes, but at least each kind of player would have its own idyllic place.

But another thing this would solve would be what happens with new killers/survivors. I am a main killer, and when a new killer joins the roster I am willing to test said new character. Now killers take time to get used to and fully understand, plus adopting a plystyle that fits you and the mechanics of said killer. With that said, in the current gamemode I find myself with little room for tests as I find myself genrushed too often, every mistake is severely punished and you are demanded to adapt to the killer in no time to play decently. You cannot train, you have to compete since the beginning. And the fact that underperforming affects your MMR, even when you are simply lacking experience with one new feature of the game...I find it unfair. A casual mode would be a perfect training grounds I believe. MMR wouldn't get affected by the fact that people are training or memeing or whatever. I just think it would be fairer for everyone.

My queue times at night are already long enough if I want to play any Survivor games. So anything that might increase that wouldn't be welcome.

I also think a casual mode would still need an MMR system anyway. It's that way for unranked Fortnite. Difference is, MMR systems tend to work better in those kinds of symmetrical 1 vs 1 games, because success is based more on individual performance and/or teams rank up or down together. Match making accuracy can't truly be achieved for DBD in my opinion and not much would really change for "casual" players.

That said, I'd be willing to sweat for Iri shards. But I wouldn't be playing a ranked mode for fun.

Cosmetics would make some casuals feel forced to play competitive, à la the FOMO crowd.

They could do something like reward iri shards depending on rank.

It literally cannot be any worse than it is now.

"But comp players will play against casuals!"

Oh, you mean the same exact thing as right now except there's a DC penalty? Oh wow, the horror!

There's literally not a single argument left against separate gamemodes. People are starting to wake up to the fact that getting lobbies instantly doesn't mean anything if it's ten cracked Blights in a row.

A casual mode would imply a casual match. That is the difference. You go into a match today and you may get a tryhard or casual. You would expect and be perpared for both. In a casual mode any action resembling a tryhard would be viewed as griefing to any other player. If you play several matches of this type in a casual setting you may just quit because the alternative is the comp mode.

Like many have said already, there will be a set of people who will play the casual mode just to torment others. Because people like that do exists and DBD is a game that draws in that type.

The game does have 2 modes. There is the regular queue, and then there is the kill your friends mode.

Kill your friends is casual where you can do w/e you want with your friends, set you own rules, even ban certain perks/items/killers/maps etc.

The queue is where you play serious.

The evidence for this is that the game has MMR. If MMR did not exist, then you can make the argument about dbd being a "party" game. But let me ask you this, do you think games like mario party/mario kart queue you up with people who are similar MMR or that it just picks the fastest game possible?
