So I guess when a pig brings extra traps
Pig brought an extra trap I was lucky number 5 and I escorted the 4 and 3 search people (me and 3 twights) red shirt dwight was 4 anime helm dwight was 3 and 2 default dwight was also 2 and I was 4. The math seems to not be right with an extra trap because that's 2 traps of 4 1 trap of 3 and 2 traps of 2 searches. why the hell did bringing 1 extra trap add 4 searches to us. I got hatch but default dwight got killed on his second boc which should not have been needed. In addition to that red shirt dwight rescued me and died after my 2nd search as he was escorting me around to boxes and like a team player took the down for me as we were both on death hook (Pig camped me to stage 2) this seems a little too strong adding 4 searches to the count if there is a fixed 12 searches for 4 traps at most it should add 2 searches.

number of traps has no impact on the number of searches.
the key is in a specific box from the start. just gotta find it. you got unlucky.

That's actually not true. There's no specific key, but rather each head trap us assigned a set number of searches required from 1-4. You'll never have to search 5 boxes. By default, the 4 head traps will require a total of 12 searches. In the event of a 5th head trap, it goes up to a total of 15 searches.

It's typically a better idea to try to be sneaky when doing boxes rather than march a parade around the map, lol. If you are escorting people, it means there's no one pressuring the Pig. If the Pig notices no gens are being touched, they're gonna start checking on boxes instead.

This is how traps used to work, but it was changed some time ago to what LordGlint said above. No matter how many traps are in play, they always have a combined total that averages to 3 searches per trap.
4 traps = 12 searches
5 traps = 15 searches

That's not how it works anymore, you are guaranteed a number of searches based on your trap counts. What this means is, if someone gets the trap off on the first shot, then the other ones are going to take longer.

That was changed awhile ago to counter the "AFK Pig" strategy. Now there is 5 boxes and each trap is assigned a number of searches, all adding up to 12 by default. Adding or subtracting traps adds 3 searches per trap, but no trap will ever take more than 4 searches.
