Nightmare: An Idea For A Freddy Change (Again)

Greetings, survivors, killers, and both-siders of the Fog! I hope this thread finds you doing well. Thanks for joining me today.

So, Freddy Krueger is currently trending around here. Unfortunately, it is not for a good reason. This poor killer, my favorite character in the game, is completely ruined. And this situation cannot be tolerated.

It is with that in mind that I would like to present you, once again, my idea for what should be done with this character. I have been a Freddy main since 2018 and would be honored to have a shot at fixing this killer that I truly love.

Without further ado, here it is:

Power: Dream Demon

Pull survivors into the Dream World

-Survivors who are awake do not see The Nightmare.

-Once targeted by The Nightmare’s power, survivors enter the Dream Transition for 7 seconds.

-During the Dream Transition Survivors can see The Nightmare intermittently and they suffer from the Incapacitated status effect.

-When the Dream Transition Lapse, the Survivor is pulled into the Dream World.

Once in the Dream World:

-Survivor’s auras are revealed to The Nightmare when they are outside of his terror radius.

-Survivors suffer an action speed penalty of 50%.

-To exit the Dream World, Survivors can find non-sleeping Survivors to perform a wake up action.

-Failed Skill Checks can also wake up.

-Hooked Survivors wake up.

Special Ability: Dream Projection

-Teleport to a Generator in view. Releasing the button early will cancel the action.

-Survivors cannot interact with the targeted Generator.

You have nothing to worry about. This won’t hurt one… little… bit.” -Freddy Krueger

It could happen. Or not. Who knows?

    I sincerely hope it does.

Either way, I'm glad you liked it!

    Been waiting for this!

If Sadako's getting her old self back, then it's Freddy's turn. I mean, they should still have the assets for the effects of the pulling into dream ability. The incapacitated effect is what solves people unhooking against Freddy or holding gens against hm, so I already love that (the Twins brought one good thing to the table, lmao).

Do you think it would be possible to incorporate the alarm clocks into his power? Like maybe as something Freddy interacts with instead of the survivors? It's probably off the table in terms of survivor interaction, but I do like the models of the alarm clocks and the sounds they make. Or maybe make the alarm clocks exist for survivors to be able to interact with and escape the dream world with as a downside for Jump Rope. If not then it's totally understandable, I just want old Freddy to be fully playable again. Maybe an add-on for dream pallets too?

Overall really well-written as per usual with you, it's been 4.5 years ever since Freddy's disgusting rework so I hope the glory days of his comes back soon enough. I appreciate the dedication you're doing to try and bring back your favorite killer, there's no justification for BHVR to just straight up delete a killer's entire power, it's awful. Perhaps for the next half of 2024, we'll get a new roadmap that will feature an update to The Nightmare himself.

Hello, my friend! Good to see you here!

Yes, I gotta say their idea for Sadako's next changes gave me hope. I mean, if they are willing to do it with Sadako, why not Freddy? Thanks to the Incapacitated status effect it is very easy to modernize his kit from release. Though honestly, even if he was brought back without a single QoL improvement I would still love it.

As for the alarm clocks, I don't really like them. I know fellow Old Freddy players tried to incorporate them into their own concepts, but I just don't think it is a good idea to keep them. It would be far too easy to wake up, in my opinion. If their existence was tied to an add-on, it would have to be an extremely powerful add-on. I don't think Jump Rope has that level of strength, to be honest.

And the add-on for the Dream Pallets was actually a thing! This is from when I posted this concept in 2021:

    Black Box:

-Broken pallets are replaced by Dream Pallets

-Non-sleeping survivors cannot see or interact with Dream Pallets

I can sleep… I just don’t want to” -Dean Russell

I changed it because I thought it was too much. I mean: aura-reading, slowdown at base, mobility, pseudo-stealth, it is a powerful kit. Adding a chase ability on top of that felt a little too powerful. Not "Nurse" levels of powerful, but still...

However, the pre-drop meta wasn't as prominent back then as it is now, so maybe this would have to be reconsidered. What do you think? I'd love to hear your feedback.

And thank you so much for your kind words, my friend! It has been a long dance since patch 3.1.0 took away my favorite killer and ever since 2019 I am finally hopeful again. I really really hope the devs give him another chance, I miss him so much. I appreciate your support my friend, it means a lot to me.

Let us hope for a glorious Old Freddy comeback in 2024.

To be honest with you, I don't think it would be too powerful. Survivors would still be capable of knowing which pallets would be dream pallets since they wouldn't be visible outside of the dream world, and there would still be counterplay using windows and the common exhaustion perk Lithe. Plus, an animation of the particles of the pallet reversing back to their original places to create a dream pallet would be SICK.

I do also like the current Black Box that you have so maybe either one of those could be Very Rare. If it's too much it might be possible to give a downside for running the add-on such as the alarm clocks or nerfs his slowdown or aura reading to compensate when using it. Add-ons that change gameplay of the killer are really cool where they have downsides but make the killer's power different, such as Hag's Scarred Hand, Trapper Sack, and Scratched Mirror Myers.

But yeah I get what you mean with the alarm clocks, with the way old Freddy's kit is designed it might become EMPs part 2 (which is fine for Singularity but not sure with Freddy). Also missing skill checks is a 50/50 counter to Freddy as it not only gives him a method of slowdown with the skill checks damaging generators in the process but it also wakes up a survivor (which is a pretty interesting design for counterplay and I love what BHVR did there back then).

I miss when the dream world was actually scary and threatening rather than "oooh red puddle scarryyyyyy" though the dream pallets do help against that sort of even with current Freddy because it adds a degree of paranoia when it comes to dropping pallets.

If BHVR goes back to Freddy someday I hope that they listen to your suggestions as well as what any other prime Freddy enjoyers have to think, we can only hope to god that they don't butcher him again like they did in 2019.

    Interesting points, my friend.

I can see the counterplay survivors could use against the Dream Pallets should they remain in the concept, though it is difficult to determine how strong they would actually be without the means of testing it. Between them and the Black Box I have now (which essentially has Class Photo's current effect, but without the downside) there are some interesting things that could be done with this ultra-rare add-on.

And yes, I do love the idea of missing skill checks to wake up. Freddy, and the whole ANOES chapter, were excellent on release and I love everything BHVR came up with back then. The 50/50 counter you've described is the reason why Overcharge was so good on him. At first it sounds weird, but slowly I think every Freddy player understood how brilliant it actually was.

Freddy has very little going for him right now, and as someone who absolutely loves this killer I would be honored if BHVR accepted my ideas for what should be done with him. The developers have a golden opportunity to fix the mistake of 2019 and I sincerely hope they take it.

I found you through one of my Polls. I like this concept. It's fair and simple, and it respects Freddy's lore. This seems like a dream. (Pun intended.) Maybe, one day, we'll see something similar to this. Heard in one guy's video that, appearently, devs be talking that Freddy, along with Michael, is definitely getting "looked at". Maybe we'll see something happen at the second half of 2024, I could be wrong, till then, who knows. But regardless, I love this concept. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Always good to read your posts friend!

Old Freddy seems like a good direction to head, however with this iteration of Freddy his power is pretty similar to PTB Sadako, with immense slowdown, a weak stealth (by virtue of being unable to attack) and a teleport to gens... with this in mind there are a few things I'm not so keen on that I'd like to feedback/share thoughts on.

Failed Skill Checks can also wake up.

I really don't conceptually like failed Skill Checks waking survivors up. It's RNG reliant, and I really don't care for the ping ponging in and out of the dream state.

I can see that players will carry a medkit (they are still the best item for survivors in the game), throw pallets and sit trying to get skill checks for self healing and spamming for a miss (like people did when everyone ran self-care)(P.S. Franklin's Value?). It also means if everyone is asleep, and you don't have a medkit or aren't injured, your only escape is deliberately reverting progress on healing other survivors or break gens, which given the huge 50% repair speed reduction, you must do. Again you're sat spamming the skillcheck button waiting for RNG to grant you one that you might not even get.

While I don't like the clocks for the almost painful lack of originality, having to race to a location to get out of the dream with Freddy in pursuit fits more thematically to me, especially with regards to thoughts I have about teleporting. Instead of clocks, I would have the survivor have to burn thier hand on one of Freddy's pipes or take a steam jet to the face or something that would hurt in order to wake up.

Once targeted by The Nightmare’s power, survivors enter the Dream Transition for 7 seconds, during the Dream Transition Survivors can see The Nightmare intermittently and they suffer from the Incapacitated status effect.

The incapacitated effect is a great touch here, stops survivors doing things in Freddy's face with him being helpless. One thing that strikes me about Old Freddy though is the way you wander around spamming your dream world yoink on survivors to pull them into the dream once you're in range. Once you have that Transition it's all about trying yo keep people in the dream as mich as possible.

The fire and forget style of this power doesn't seem very interactive to me, and in conjunction with the Incapacitated effect it seems like it'd be quite frustrating to face (especially in conjunction with my skill check escape removal suggestion above).

I think a more interesting method might be something like:

    • Have 21s transition that is fire and forget, that inflicts half the repair penalty on generators for the duration of the transition.
    • Have Freddy channel on a specific survivor to increase the Transition rate by a factor of 3 to take 7s (from maximum) and apply Incapacitated.

This would mean that Freddy can target a survivor to incapacitate, still put pressure on others as he goes but can't just constantly spam Incapacitate at will. With multiple survivors swarming at gates for example you can incapacitate the one opening the gate, and then they have to move to let another survivor in. Perhaps transitioning survivors gain collision with Freddy, and if he plays it smart he may be able to body block at gate, which gives him the unique property to block off a gate rush after an unhook.

Special Ability: Dream Projection. Teleport to a Generator in view. Releasing the button early will cancel the action. Survivors cannot interact with the targeted Generator.

This is the major talking point and I think it's great to keep this is his kit. One thing that is irksome about this addition though is as gens get completed, he loses the power to teleport. This might be fine mind you, since ofc the rest of his power is there to slow down all actions, healing and otherwise, especially as he now can block the generator being repaired with his TP... so perhaps that is sufficient trade off where as the trial goes on, he gets weaker?

That being said, how does blocking generators interact with the black box? If you don't get blocked but the gen spews blood, you know he isn't coming, if you do get blocked, you know he is, so the surprise doens't work... I'd prefer the abvlity to teleport to gens regardless of whether they are powered or not? Or would that be too oppressive in the end game?

    Me being silly:

I'm going off the rails with something mad cap now that I'll just brain dump... since his TP has a pretty long cooldown, perhaps allowing Freddy to teleport to other things as well, that are near a survivor in the dream (since he has their aura anyway). Like pallets that haven't been thrown, hooks that don't have a survivor on them. Pretending to be a hanging survivor then unhooking himself, or leaning against a pallet the survivor is running to is something I can really see Freddy doing... and it gives him to power to do some mind games at loops. He probably need other things toning down to compensate, but it would be pretty interesting.

Anyway, outside of my BS, it sounds cool regardless! GL getting Freddy back :D

Hello friend! I'm sorry it took me a long time to respond, lots of things happening in DBD today.

Thank you so much for your support, I sincerely appreciate it <3

It has been a long dance since July of 2019, but this time I have hope for my favorite killer's return to the game.

Thank you, my friend! It is very good to have you here.

We've discussed some of your points here before, and I suppose we mostly agree to disagree on some aspects regarding his base-kit. However, you bringing up Black Box may have revealed an oversight.

So, this was the actual Black Box back in the day:

And I always thought it was a bit weak for an Iri. The obsession could start the trial close to someone else, and you would barely get any value out of their aura being revealed at the start. Not to mention that we now have Lethal Pursuer in the game, which would do a much better job than this add-on.

So, when I posted this concept in 2021 this was my idea for Black Box:

Then I had the idea of giving it the same effect current Class Photo has, without its downside. But I'm now I see it might not be that good of an idea... unless I removed the "Survivors cannot interact with the targeted generator", but I don't really like the fact that a generator can be finished before you even have time to teleport to it.

There is food for thought here, my friend. I'll try to find an answer.

And thank you for the good luck wishes, my friend <3

Getting my favorite killer back is my mission here.

    Very cute <3

I would like him that way, hopefully I get to play him one day. One little change to dream projection; Survivor’s around 16m of the generator you project to get automatically pulled into the dream world. I think dream pallets should be somehow a part of his kit even tho they aren’t quite useful, but they can be extremely fun.

For the addons; I think decreasing the chance of skill checks isn’t a very good effect and you have a lot of addons that do the exact same only with different numbers. I think you could add the killer instinct after each projection as addon.
