Why is the hatch a thing?

Im a killer main and i never really understood the whole idea around the hatch. As soon as a player smells defeat he will just say F his team and hide and wait for his whole team to die, but even worst if they think the killer found the hatch first they will keep hiding. I never really cared about the mechanic until i just got out of a game that lasted like a extra 30 mins after everyone died because i found the hatch so he just decided he was gonna keep hiding. then if you close it they will continue to hide and you have to gamble which side of the map there on. The only way to avoid this is to be even more toxic. Leave the 3rd guy in the dying state and when hes almost bled out carry him until the other guy comes out. Which is toxic asf. in all honesty just take the hatch out, it just promotes to much toxic and anoyying gameplay, and im pretty sure its stressful on the surv and killer side. or a fix could be keep the hatch but when it opens reveal auras to the killer and surv for a number of seconds. the hatch spawns in random places so the hatch could very well spawn right ontop of the surv, but it also gives a slight edge to the killer which is needed so people will stop thinking its better to just let there team die when they give up.
